No one got screwed harder than Duke, this weekend. For those that missed it: Miami pulled off a Stanford/Cal-esque kickoff return for a TD, to win the game. But there was a penalty for an illegal block in the back. The officials reviewed the play, because every scoring play is reviewed. But here's where it gets bad:

After reviewing the play, the officials determined that no Miami returners had been down while possessing the ball, but they also determined that the block in the back was not actually a block in the back, and UPHELD THE TD. An illegal block in the back is NOT a reviewable infraction, so the touchdown should not have counted. And the ACC is admitting that the Dookies got jobbed.

On Saturday there was an even stranger targeting call than the one against Shumate and it was also upheld.

It happened in Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State.

At this point I just figuratively throw my hands up in the air because I just don't understand how the rule operates or why it operates the way it does.

That whole crew should be suspended with out pay for 2 weeks.

"In the end, the officiating crew declared the play legal and the touchdown stood.

The ACC also suspended the officiating crew for two games."

Did not see until after the replay started, but I heard that the block in the back call came absurdly late and was almost just the refs looking for a reason to call it back.

They also blew the call that gave Duke the lead.

This is so bad. Literally could reverse it and give Duke the win as video shows they did in fact win as the Miami player was down and the clock was all zeros. Suspending the crew for two weeks does nothing, except admit that Duke got a loss when they earned a W.

Obviously I know this will not happen but it's crazy the things that replay is meant to fix and they did a nine minute review and still did not come close to getting it right.

If they were smart, these officials would immediately get an OVI so their suspension can be cut to 1 game..... ;)

I didn't watch the game but I read there were 23 Miami penalties to 5 for Duke. It's hard to think there is legitimately that big of a discrepancy.

Didn't see that, but just looked it up. 153 more yards of penalties for Miami. Wow.

The refs didn't screw Duke, Duke screwed themselves. Their players played tentatively on the final play.

My favorite part of that play was the dude who just runs on the field without a helmet while the runner was at the ten yard line. Lol how the hell did that not get called?

Reviewing and reversing a block in the back is getting screwed.

So is missing the down returner that the ACC admitted they missed that would have the ended the game with zeros on the clock. A nine minute review and they do not get it right. Crazy. This site would have burned down if the same had happened to ND.

I think that on that play there were at least the following:

1)Miami player knee touching the ground
2)2 or possibly 3 blocks in the back
3)1 targeting infraction that looked much worse than the Shumate one (an another that looked very close to a hit to the neck area)
4)The illegal substitution AND infraction for not having the helmet (mentioned by Corry)...which is interesting as this guy crossed the goal line only a couple of seconds after the ball carrier

Too bad, Miami might have been able to boost their penalties over 30 for the game.... really relive their glory years from the 80's and 90's and all that

ASU got completely hosed by a TD in overtime against Oregon. Oregon receiver was CLEARLY out of bounds and the TD stood.

I about threw my remote through my tv when they announced it stood. Worst targeting penalty I've ever seen

Now that David Grimes is on folks minds, I recall a very spirited discussion on IE about a great TD catch his senior year. The play had a long review and stood as a no catch and I was in absolute shock. It was one of the best layout catches I have ever seen. And that one did not change the game nearly so drastically. So yeah, I.E. would break if that happened to ND.

It wasn't that it stood as a no-catch. It was ruled a catch, and then overturned on replay, which was complete and utter BS. You be the judge:

It was actually called a catch on the field and was reversed. That's what made it egregious. No way was there evidence to overturn...quite the opposite. Caught the ball, turned his hand so that the tip of the ball didn't hit the ground, and completed the catch.

I think you are right. Grimes was holding that ball on the tips of his fingers. Incredible catch. He got hosed.

I've never seen an angle from the other side of the field on that play, which is the only conceivable way the call could have been overturned. Maybe, it's out there, but given the steam that play generated you'd think they would release the footage. Still angry about that one.
