autry denson was from florida.

notre dame, in your opinion, may not have the best luck with southern backs; however, the hype with them come from performance at the highest level. take a look at a couple of NFL rosters and what you will find is a multitude of running backs from southern states.

Examples (and these are just the most recognizable names)

Shaun Alexander-KY
Ronnie Brown-GA
Carnell Williams-AL
Frank Gore-FL
Willis McGahee-FL
Travis Henry-FL
Willie Parker-NC
Greg Jones-SC
Jamal Lewis-GA
Duece McAllister-MS
Duce Staley-SC
DeAnglo Williams-AR

The southern states produce NFL talent at running back. It's just the truth.

The list above didn't even include VA running backs. And tgolden was correct. Julius Jones played high school football at Powell High School in Big Stone Gap, VA.

I'll go one further and ask for the good backs BESIDES these guys that we've had over the last decade. I'd say our southern backs were pretty close to it. Grant had a 1,000 season. Other than that......

Although not a RB......but still a back is the one and only Tony Rice from Woodruff, SC. I'm 32, but when I see that guy around town I turn back into that 14 year old kid back in 1988. A super class act and one of the top five ND players ever.

Don't forget Lee Bectin was from the south....in terms of good backs from the north Randy Kinder from Michigan and Marc Edwards from Ohio come to mind as good northern backs the Irish have had over the past 12 years.

Being from the South, I am always happy when ND comes down here and steals a recruit out of Athens, Effingham, Columbia, River Ridge, etc. - which does happen.

I would love to see a break down of % football players from down here versus % of the overall student population from down here versus % of the United States poplulation from each area - maybe I'll try to get those together sometime. ND is at a pretty extreme disadvantage down here especially in the non-coastal areas (other than Atlanta). Those areas tend to be pretty non(read anti)-Catholic.

By the way who considers Texas part of the South?

well, Texas is in the south... it's not really the same south as the SEC area, but it is the south nonetheless.

Yeah, I would think it is part of the South. I just thought it was funny that, while not a "back" the guy in onnybrother's avatar is from TX.

Running backs from the south are fine. It's quarterbacks from the west coast that are no good! :) I just can't figure out why Charlie Weis wants to recruit one.

As a Bengals fan, I take exception to this. It was really hard for me to come around to Carson Palmer, but boy am I glad he's on my side now.

Anybody not from Texas.

Texas is outside the S.E.C. but I think The Confederacy predates the S.E.C.

Southern Living magazine markets Maryland to Texas as The South.
