How in the hell did he limit Christian McCaffrey to under 100 yards rushing?
White Privilege.

No. It's NOT. They are not assigned a zone to cover. WTF is so hard to understand about that? They are merely dropping off so that the QB cannot float a duck right over the head of the blitzing CB. They simply occupy space.
What makes the zone blitz successful is that it allows the defense to bring outside linebackers and safeties to one side or both sides without using man-to-man blitz coverage. Normal blitzes use man-to-man coverage. The offensive line and one or two backs are assigned to block the defensive line and linebackers. In the zone blitz, the linebacker blitzes along with a secondary player, but the offensive pickup is different. It is different because defensive linemen who usually rush are now dropping out to short inside zones to replace the linebacker and secondary player that blitz. Because of the blitzer’s path, it is difficult for the offensive linemen to adjust.

Nope. Usually they have shallow inside zones and that is what they drop into. There is no other defenders in that area. Here is a quote from the article listed below. The quote is from Bill Arnsparger one of the first people to employ the zone blitz.
Controlled Chaos «
They have an assigned zone, that is a shallow zone either over the middle or to the flat.
Hmpphh. Mea culpa. I wasn't aware that the scheme had evolved so much.

By selling out to do it. Several times this year we schemed to take away dangerous individual players, and succeeded. We also shut down tricky-but-one-dimensional offenses like Georgia Tech and Navy.
But balanced offenses gave us trouble. In Stanford's case we forced Hogan to beat us, and he did. Today Ohio State had too many weapons, and we were too depleted. But it wasn't Ezekiel Elliot who beat us, not in the first half anyway. It was Barrett.
What really gets me about our defense is two things: We're terrible on third downs, and we don't force turnovers. Both speak to a lack of playmakers, of guys who can blow up a play when it counts or force a mistake. This is weird because I feel like we have the most athletic defense we've had in a long time; they should be more disruptive than they are. The fact they're not would suggest our players are tentative, which fits with all the talk about how our defense is so complex.
Also weird because we're supposedly running this aggressive scheme that should force mistakes - in exchange for giving up the occasional big play. We give up the big play, but we don't create very many mistakes. Seems like a bad trade.
44 Points scored by Ohio State, the most ever against Notre Dame in the 35 bowl games it has played. The previous mark was Alabama’s 42-14-victory in the 2013 BCS Championship.
Injuries, injuries and player misconduct causing key players to be sent home are the big reasons for tonights failure. Is there hope for the future of ND defense for 2016 ? Yes and it doesnt mean firing the D coordinator. It means that kids have to take responsibility plain and simple.

Tired of the injuries excuse. That has nothing to do with scheme and that is the biggest problem IMO.
What is it, exactly, about the scheme that makes you prioritize it as the #1 problem?

- Why does he continuously blitz us out of plays?
- Our defense is so complicated that we can't even teach it to the second string players, so when injuries happen we are hider.
- Where are the adjustments that need to happen in game, half time, and through out the season.
OSU was way more physical. Not sure scheme would have helped.

Yep. Hard to ask a front 7 that's injury plagued and paper-thin depth wise to compete against a very physical offensive line, as well as a very physical RB.
can we make this a poll?
My vote..... buh bye
For those of you who vote undecided what will make up your mind? Another whole season? Possible replacements that become available?

I do not claim to be a schematic defensive expert. I will not try to say what will work, as if I know more than a successful career defensive coach. But damn, injuries or not, this defense is really frustrating to watch. I chose undecided, but at this point, the right candidate being there, I'd send BVG packing. From my uneducated perspective on the couch, NDs defense looks, weak, confused and more into late blitzes than anything else. Sanford and Denson look like great hires....who would the next D coach be??
