Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis added another blue-chipper to his talented recruiting class for 2006 on Monday night by landing an oral commitment from Proviso East free safety Sergio Brown.

Brown, rated as one of the top 100 senior prospects in the nation and one of the top four players in Illinois, chose Notre Dame over Illinois.

The 6-2, 193-pounder also had considered UCLA, Nebraska, Minnesota and LSU.

"I went to the Notre Dame-Michigan State game, and it was a wonderful atmosphere,'' Brown said. "They are on the move up. I think coach Weis is the type of coach who can do something with the program. They need help in the defensive secondary, and I'll be able to come in and help early.

"It was a two-school decision. Notre Dame always was on the top of my list with Illinois. What separated them? Notre Dame plays a great schedule. They have an opportunity to do big things that I want to be a part of. There is a lot of tradition on the campus. It reminds me of the 'Rudy' movie.''

Brown has discussed his decision with Morgan Park quarterback Demetrius Jones, who earlier committed to Notre Dame.

"He pointed out that Notre Dame is a 50-year deal, not a four-year deal. A Notre Dame education and degree means something special. And I agree with him,'' Brown said.

But Brown said, like Jones, he plans to visit other schools -- UCLA, Nebraska and Minnesota. It is a common practice among recruits, even after they make an oral commitment.

"I feel Notre Dame is the school I want to go to,'' Brown said, "but I want to see what these other schools have. I don't think I'll change my mind. I feel good about getting the recruiting process over with.''

A 50 year deal....I love it.

Recruiting intelligent kids, whether they are 3, 4, or 5 star athletes makes all the difference in the world.

I think he also saw the writing on the wall with all of the commits over the past weekend. It is about time that Notre Dame took back the recruiting process... you snooze, you go to Michigan and enjoy a yearly beating.

Enjoy it Brandon Harrison.

Amen. And how.

Reggie Bush...Lorenzo Booker. So many times over the years they've been screwed. Now players are jumping on board in a hurry.

The total package: Super Bowl winning coach, great degree, on TV every Saturday. You can't ask for much more.

They finally have a staff that is selling it.

Last weekend was my first visit to the campus in 18 years. I was with a group of friends, some of which are not ND fans, but after the game they all said they could not see why any football player would want to go any other place. Let's face it--ND has the total package and now, with Weis on board, it is finally being sold. I would not be surprised if the 2006 class is filled after the USC game.

Great going Charlie!

I am concerned with Walls also. Real uncomfortable with the fact that he raved about the Florida visit and is now ready to decide before he goes on his official to ND. We will see what happens, but with or without him the program is moving forward.

Why would he even go on his ND official visit if he wasn't going to commit?

Free trip to the ND-USC game; a chance to see Reggie Bush in action. I certainly wish I could snag tickets to that game at a reasonable price, and he'll get the plane ride and hotel with it too.

He has seen ND 4 times unofficially. He watched them beat Pitt and UM on his visits to those schools, both of whom aren't so hot these days. According to what he told the Pitt staff, Walls is saying Florida is too far and he only went there to check the experience. Still, that will be the biggest challenge for ND.

I think they have him. Weis has to be looking at him and thinking "Ted Ginn in blue and gold."

He'll play both sides of the ball, mostly corner and special teams at ND. He's probably more talented than anyone they have right now, minus Quinn and Walker. Quote me on that.
