With so much attention in recruiting these days in South Bend focused on LB's and DL, does anyone think the staff is forgetting that we are slim at corner? I know we are pretty heavy on the Brown kid from Florida and the other corner from Cali. I also think they are both going to be tough pick ups for the Irish to get them away from Florida and USC, respectively. Thoughts?

We have some good talent at the corner position, the problem with that though is that it's young talent. We will pick up a corner by all means but we have some young guys in the defensive backfield that can play. You will see what I mean this fall now that we have a defensive coordinator that knows how to utilize the talent we have. Corwin Brown aint no joke people! I'm telling all of you right now that Notre Dame's Defense this year is going to be Tough as HELL. We are going to surprise people this year and hopefully shut Mark May the hell up. GO IRISH! (sorry, didnt mean to give a peptalk!)

I agree that the D will be better this year. Tough as hell? That may be a stretch. We really don't know how good Brown is. That's the bottom line. He's got the pedigree, seems to be intelligent, etc. But until it's proven on the field, saying that the D will be great is a guess/hopeful thinking. I really do hope he is a great coordinator--and I'll think the D will be better because of two things. 1) He's not Minter.

2) The scheming/formations will probably catch other teams off-guard. As a side note, I think in the future we will end up seeing more and more 3-4 formations. USC was already utilizing it at times with Cushing last year, if I recall correctly. I read that Auburn is looking to use Quinton Groves at times this coming year for a 3-4 type format. Is this the "cyclical" response by Defenses to the spread?

However, I just don't see ND having the horses to be a great D next year. The line is perilously thin--with only Laws at this point worthy of probably being a starter on a good D. The linebackers will be a liability at times. The secondary should be better, the D's best unit on the field. Does that add up to a great D, though?

One other thing to look for: the D improving (like the team) as the year progresses.

I think we will improve in the sense that it is going to be hard for defense (especially the early games) to get a feel for what we have in store for them. Luckily, we have the advantage of a new system while we improve.

we will improve in the sense of against the major teams this year only like 24-28 points instead of 42-47 last year. dont be surprised if we are in the top 10 defenses, corwins a genius

Because CW asked around the NFL about changing defenses, and who he should have as a DC...and everyone said CB.

Our secondary is the deepest it has been for a while with a lot of talent. They are the only ones that are 3 deep in spring, but we could use a few more CBs. Our LBs should be improved over last years, but that is not saying much. No matter how good our secondary is, it does not matter if the guys up front can not get any pressure on the QB!!

HOPEFULLY he'll be great. The guys never been a DC ever in his life. I want him to install a disgustingly fierce defense, but lets have realistic expectations come on top 10 defense? have you looked at our Depth on defense as of latley?

Is that why he wanted Jim Mora first--because everyone said CB? Look, I hope CB is the the greatest d-coordinator in college football for the Irish. Irish fans seem to have to much of a tendency, however, to anoint someone before they acomplish anything. Willingham was the answer. Powlus was the next great thing. Let's hope for the best--and go Irish!

I was just about to say this same thing. Corner is the only position on defence where were aren't thin. I know most people think are corners are no good, or not fast, but the forty times give the lie to that idea. Mostly our corners are just often out of position or confused. Hopefully that can change with a new system and a coach who played DB in the NFL and seems very passionate about making sure they do it right. I liked in his press conference how he said guys were doing well but he was obviously dissatisfied. I hope he stays that way and pushes them to excellence.

BTW, i also like our trend going towards more physical corners who like to jam in our offer list.
