USC LB Maualuga arrested, accused of punching man
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- Southern California linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor battery following an off-campus altercation, police said.
The 18-year-old freshman was arrested around 4 a.m. Tuesday after allegedly punching a man at a party near campus three hours earlier, said Kevin Maiberger, a Los Angeles police spokesman. Maualuga left the scene but later turned himself into police, said LAPD spokesman Jason Lee.
Maualuga was released a short time later after posting $20,000 bail.
The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Maualuga, who practiced with the top-ranked Trojans on Tuesday afternoon, said he could not comment on the incident.
Coach Pete Carroll said he was not sure if Maualuga, who is a backup and a special teams player, would be allowed to play in USC's game Saturday against Stanford at the Coliseum.
"I talked to Rey today and tried to get as much information as you can, then there's some stuff yet to come," he said. "As always, we're going to do our stuff in-house as we have in the past and take care of our business."
Maualuga has made 13 tackles in seven games this season.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 22.
