Reilly and Rushin (I guess retiring soon) have had several anti-war/partisan views recently in their columns for SI. Another writer for SI.COM authored a piece about global warming and the supposed effect on sports.

THIS IS NOT A GLOBAL WARMING DEBATE! I just don't want to see a pretty good sports mag get more and more political. It is not even objective or balanced.

Does this make anyone else mad, or is it just me? Seeing some stuff in the leprechaun room is a whole lot different than in a subscripted sports magazine (with journalists), and injecting increasingly more junk (add golf plus to it too) I don't want to see. For those who compare what I'm doing now to what they write it is simple: they have an agenda, and I'm exposing it.

P.S. This is a sports related thread about politics addressing a sports magazine becoming too political.

If I wanted a political opinion, I'd read Time. SI needs to stick to sports. It's not PI.

Geez, if it wasn't bad enough that SI shows it's ass ref sports, now we have to read about politics, which they know even less about !!! I thought Keith Oberman was the only Sports/Political nut job in town !!!!

Although I think I generally agree with SI just sticking to sports, Stoney, I wonder if this would bother some people as much if SI wrote in support of the war? Just wondering.

or stated Global warming was a conspiracy too. reps to you shiva. My bet is if it were in favor of the war and portrayed a story of how sports kept america's armies in touch with their home country everything would be all right and this post would not be here.

SI should stick to sports w/ exceptions of athletes involved in the (any) war, like Pat Tillman. I can see if an athlete had some bearing on global warming or some other hot button issue. But I'd find that hard to believe. Most athletes are too concerned w/ clothing their posse, getting new DUBs for their Escalade & shooting steroids to worry about wordly matters. SI is not worth the paper (wonder if it's recycled!) it's printed on. Just pick one up for free at the local doc's office, they won't care.

Let me put it to all of you like this. This is america. America is one big corporation designed to stuff unnecessary items down our ( the consumers) throats. Sports publications are no different than Cosmo or Good Housekeeping. Anything to sell the advertisers and your products. Thats what it is about. For that matter any major media outlet does the same thing which is why ther are no less than hundreds of televison commercials in each NFL game. College Football will soon follow ( idare say it is almost as bad already). I personally think that is why televised soccer has not caught on in the media here because we are so used to watching interuppted sporting events like baseball, football, and baketball ( it hit me last night watching the UEFA Champions league when i needed to go to the bathroom and i couldnt because i did not wnat to miss anything in the match between Bayern and Real Madrid).

There is no room for media advertisement except on the field displays. American companies have not figured out how to stuff 32 minutes of commercials in our faces over the 90 minute uninterupted soccer game.

So inessecne by providing articles like that in their publications they are trying to reach a demographic that would appreciate that slant.

So everyone here will probaly start hating SI like they hate ESPN ( for their obvious anti ND slant) LOL!

thats your opinion. IMO soccer is a very smart, beautiful, and athletically demanding game. Its not for eveyone in the world..... Wait,..... it is the #1 sport in the world except for the USA. Wonder what the problem is there?

Good question! I wouldn't have a problem if they had some balance, which there isn't. So it appears to be agenda driven, not news or an objective article. Basically, the author used sports to give the whole reason why global warming is real, and upon us already. Fine, believe what you want, but don't disguise it as sports related, nor have just one viewpoint being offered on a consistent basis.

right and "fair and balanced" fox news does not have an agenda. I dont understand the way you mentally process things like this. Not a jab, i just dont see the a-b-c-d of your thought process. To me it seems more like a-d, therefore x.

We aren't talking about foxnews, but about a sports magazine who is disguising sports stories to offer political views, all one-sided it seems to me.

btw- the commentators are oreilly-traditionalist,
hannity-conservative
colmes-liberal
greta-left of center

Sounds balanced to me dude!

OK> That makes Fox news balanced. They report everything that the others do. Nothing different.

Review my previous post about the media in general in America. It is all ad revenue sales and circulation. When a media conglomerate buys another media outlet, they look at two things 1st ad revenue, and marketability demographics. That is all there is to media. Who will pay to advertise on us and who will it reach. I wouldnt put too much thought into what SI has to say about GW or the iraq war.

It's the #1 sport b/c it costs kids/adults next to nothing to play. Unlike baseball & football. Soccer serves as a great way to improve an athlete's footwork. Take former All American CB, Shane Walton, for example. His soccer background made him into an excellent cover corner in college. The kid didn't even originally enroll at ND on a football scholarship...it was soccer that got him there.

Not totally. I agree that soccer is fine for people who enjoy it. But it's been forced down America's throat along w/ the WNBA to no avail. No demand=no fans. I just listed a reason why it's #1 in the world but not here. IMO, it bores me to death. But that doesn't mean that other people can't love it. If my kids show interest in playing, I'll support them 100%.

I do agree w/ your take on the media. You are correct they want to sell ads & don't give a damn what it takes to sell them. Look at NBC. They could care less if ND wins or loses as long as ND is relevant. Because the casual fans will join the diehard fans & the haters to tune in.

That also pokes a hole in the age old excuse that the media can't be liberal b/c it's owned by media conglomerates who are fiscally conservative. Bullshit. Those stockholders don't care what cute little Katic Couric or dour faced Charles Gibson say as long as viewership is up. It won't change the way they think or vote; but it will influence their corporate strategy

gotcha. thanks for the explanation. I am sorry soccer bores you. i lwatched most of the UEFA games this week and i loved every minute of it. It is kind of like what watching a 16 team playoff in CFB would be like. The top of the top from each european league playing others league leaders. The best of the best playing the best of the best.

In all seriousness Dodger, i am trying to turn a new leaf on the board and be a little nicer.

This isn't fun when we all agree to agree! LOL
I think there are plenty of forums to air legitimate concerns about issues, SI should stick to babes, baseball, basketball, and bashing ND chances of our title hopes.

I agree w/ SI bashing ND, but they did print a special issue dedicated to Notre Dame football last fall. It went through just about every article about ND football ever published in SI. It was distributed nationally & a nice keepsake. That being said, I have to go back to what SLH said about ad dollars being the ultimate goal of magazines. SI may rejoice when they can report negatively on ND, but they know where their bread is buttered. They realized that ND has a massive fan base nationwide, so they put together a special newstand issue dedicated to ND football. It's all 'bout the Benjamins.

That's not my opinion. That's the shared opinion of most Americans. We don't give a flying F what England, France, Germany, Bolivia and Sengal play. Who cares? We don't. We have real football. Americans will watch Arena Football before they watch soccer. Hell there's Arena League 2 for Pete's sake.

We, Americans, are bored by soccer. Sorry but it's not a point that is up for debate. It bores us. No scoring, no hitting, a clock that runs the wrong way... How many failed pro American soccer leagues have there been? I don't know how many but the answer is "every one". And we don't care that David Beckham is here. BFD! Unless Posh is going to ref the games nude, no one will care.

The game is played for an hour with goals the size of barn doors and the teams can still only manage to score a couple goals between them. And for the love of Pete, pick the freggin ball up. We can't like any sport where a double arm amputee could be sucessful. Seriously, cut Beckham's arms off just below the elbow and he could still play soccer. Cut Peyton Manning's arms off and he wouldn't be able sell beer in the 700 level.

American soccer is minivans, Capri Sun and pizza parties.

And I don't want to hear about sophistication of the European soccer fan. Italy or some other country had to play its top league games in empty stadiums because of fan violence. Could you imagine the Eagles and Cowboys playing in an empty stadium? And Philly fans threw snowballs at Santa and cheered Michael Irvin's career ending injury. But they don't trample people to death. Cops die at soccer games.

Americans don't like soccer - PERIOD - My whole life I've been told of soccer's imminent explosion to top of the American sports world. Well, it's been 34 years and I'm still waiting.

And SI sucks, even the swimsuit issue sucks anymore. Where's Kathy Ireland when you need her?

Hell, I get bored with cars driving around a track. Not to mention watching guys hit a little ball a few hundred feet. (wow, what excitement!). Score more than once or twice a half, then talk to me, and do away with offsides!!!

I am not trying to start an indictment on americas views of "football". My whole point is the "football" is the most beloved sport around the world except here and it has a lot to do with advertisers linking my original statement in refernce to your initial post. thats all. I dont like NASCAR either- to me its a bunch of bootlegging redneck decendants turning left for 500 miles. But i do not deny it is worthy of spectatorship.(is that a word?). Baseball games are always better in the stands drinking a cold one. Golf is the same. I love to play it, i love to go to tournaments, but i cant stand wtching it on tv.

We, Americans, are bored by soccer (you may be because you, like most americans lack subtelty). Sorry but it's not a point that is up for debate.(I do not deny americans dont like professional soccer, but americans are so used to having crappy things shoved down their throats, i am not surprised.)
