I know this has been brought up in the past, but with the problems defensively this season what do you think of bringing Crennel in to take over the defense next season? IMO he is a big name defensive coordinator that has an obvious history of success with Charlie Weis....and is currently available. I think Crennel is a guy Weis totally trusts who would also be a boost for recruiting. While, I am not big on the 3-4 defense I think Crennel would be a good get for Notre Dame and might be our best option heading into the offseason.

Bring in Romeo!!!!!!

Tenuta wasn't supposed to be a big name College D Coordinator, he WAS a big name College D Coordinator. Maybe undeservedly so, but his accomplishments were pretty impressive, at GT.

I think alot of the defensive problems we are having now are because kids don't want to play a 3-4

Specifically Dlinemen don't want to commit to play 3-4.

I dont know if there is or will be a big name college defensive coordinator out there, but I think the relationship Weis and Crennel have would yield huge dividends on this team. Crennel was also a college defensive coordinator for 10 years prior to having huge success in the NFL including three Super Bowl titles as the defensive cooridnator in New England. I think he is the #1 option of Tenuta is not retained.

If Weis stays this may be interesting. Why would any coach want to come in when the current coach is gonna be on the hottest seat in college football.

So was Crennel's success in New England due to the fact that he was in Belicheck's system or is he that good of a Defensive coordinator?

Either way he is probably gonna be an upgrade from what we have now!

I also think the 3-4 gives us more versatility!

So you believe Charlie Weis will be here next season?

And Romeo Crennel's history with Charlie Weis were as assistants under Bill Bellichick, Crennel's coaching ability of the defense was massively overrated leading him to fail badly with the Browns who had a horrible offense & defense.

Its pretty much been proven his success was due to the system, their defense didn't lose a step after he left.

Secondly, Romeo Crennel hasn't coached college football in 29 years.

I have no clue! At this point all that matters is winning! If we do let Weis go we better send the house to get the best coach in college football!

Send the POPE to Florida!!!

Idratherkeep Weis than have to see the team turn to eye gouging and players being kicked offthe team for being arrested. If Fauria couldnt handle it, i am sure Meyer wont.

Let's also not forget that Crennel was Belicheck's first defensive coordinator in New England and helped to implement that system that led to three Super Bowl Championships. How did that "system" work for Belicheck in Cleveland before he had Crennel?

I like Crennel as an option if Tenuta is not retained. The guy has 38 years of experience as a defensive coach and I would guess he could figure out how to stop the triple option amongst other college offense's. I think he could be the defensive equivelant of what Weis does for the offense.

Yes, it's been brought up in the past. Here are some link's to Crennel threads:

Calling Romeo Crennel

Who would you like to see as DL coach?

Crennel For DLine?

Poll: Assume Minter leaves ND: Who replaces him? (Crennel got the most votes 3 years ago this week! Some guy named Tenuta was the second most popular choice.)

Didn't Weis approach Crennel 2 years ago when his Browns gig ended but Romeo didn't want any part of it?

Are there masochists on this board or am I missing something. You see the problems we are getting with Weis and now you want to bring in Crennel? Why not grab Mangini while we're at it?

The problem is we need Bill Bellichick to make things right.

A New England Super Bowl reunion on our sidelines.

Didn't they come within a crazy ass helmet catch of being undefeated champions? Winning a Super Bowl isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. Might be slightly tougher than beating Navy.

And what problems are we getting with Weis? I know the ultimate responsability rests on his shoulders for the teams performance, but he is doing his part. His offense ranks 6th in the country and he has recruited like nobodys business. The defense, for the most part, has been and continues to be the problem. This year under Tenuta has been especially frustrating as players like Harrison Smith, Brian Smith, and Robert Blanton seem to have regressed from the players they were last season. Way too much confusion, missed tackles, lack of discipline and toughness on the part of the defense and that is Tenuta's responsability. Weis handed him total control and he has produced a sloppy unit that can not come up with big stops and get off the field.

Crennel is a proven commodity as a defensive coordinator. Look at what Monte Kiffin is doing in Tennessee. Dont tell me NFL guys with the pedigree and background of a Kiffin or Crennel can not be successful at the college level. I think adding Crennel would be great fit based on our needs and the relationship he has with Weis.

If you do a search you'll find Mangini. I only posted Crennel threads from the past.

3-16 against ranked teams and worse season in Notre Dame history. Is that enough of a problem for ya? If you cant see that Weis cant get the job done with that track record than nothing will do it. And dont ever put Monte Kiffin in the same sentence as Romeo Crennel. Thats like putting Trent Dilfer in the same light as Dan Marino. If Crennel is such a proven commodity, when is no one knocking down his door? And did you happen to look at the Browns defense under his tenure? His last year in Cleveland, the Browns gave up 22 pts/gm...with 8 of them giving up 25+.

ND needs to stick with a defensive scheme. Anytime you change, it takes 2-3 years to get the right players. That is one of the main issues with the current bunch.

Stick with Corwin Brown, get rid of Tenuta, and bring in a long time defensive coordinator to support Brown (someone who will see ND as an opportunity, such as from a smaller or less prestigious school, but with a good program). Our DL coach is one such example already in place. We need more experienced supporting coaches that know the same scheme to support Brown and Weis who are operating above their previous levels for the first time.

I'm not sure it's just that easy. Why keep Corwin Brown? He is the DBs coach. What have you seen from the DBs that makes you think Corwin Brown can coach any better than Tenuta?
