Q. One of the things you mentioned earlier was that if a quarterback is not comfortable, you won't give it to him. He said nothing you've given him made him uncomfortable. Did that worry you at all, or is it that he's so confident he can take it all in?

COACH WEIS: Until he proves me otherwise, it doesn't worry me at all. It makes me happy, tell you the truth. You just got to ease into this, though. You just don't all of a sudden give him the kitchen sink. You have to just grow in what you're doing.

But we've given him a couple games now, both this game and the Purdue game, he did a lot of that; that was him, that wasn't me. I could sit there and take all the kudos I want, but I don't throw it. He's the one making the decisions and the throws. So give credit where credit is due, and it's not to me, it's to him.

Interesting. I've seen lots of people comparing Brady Quinn to Tom Brady. Maybe they oughta be comparing him to Peyton Manning instead? It's a warm feeling to realize that some of the playcalling that's had me shouting "Brilliant!" Guiness-ad-style at the TV has been from Quinn, not from Weis.

Quinn's "playcalling"

Is Quinn actually calling the plays or is he audiblizing the called play to take advantage of the defense's formation? I think there's a significant difference. Clearly Quinn needs the skill to read and evaluate the defense and he needs the judgement to change the called play but isn't CW calling the play that sets up the defense?

I don't mean that sematically. We're not defining "is". I think they're CW's plays and that he's given BQ the liberty to modify based on checkoffs. Are the DL's in the gaps? Where's the MLB? DBs? If they're playing run, BQ audibles to pass or vice versa. Similar to Tony Rice running the triple option. He made a read of the DT to decide if he handed the all to the FB, then read the DE to take the inside or pitch outside. Rice didn't call "the play" but his judgement of the reads adjusted or refined "the play" called by Holtz.

Not a putdown but a distinction.

my guess is if Quinn is involved in the playcalling, charlie's probly giving him 2 or 3 plays that he gets to pick from at the line of scrimmage. This is basically what Indianapolis does w/ Manning (although I think he gets a huge range of plays to choose from, he's basically that teams offensive coordinator), and its what my Giants recently started doing in some situations w/ their own Manning.

I think when you have a QB smart enough to do this, its a great idea. All the plays are being given by Weis, so none of them are "bad," but it gives the QB a chance to read the defense and call a play accordingly which is something the coach doesn't have the luxury of doing, rather than sticking w/ the play that was already handed down.

i would guess this is an accurate interpretation of weis' comments.

It is natural in the progression of a great quarterback to be able to check off at the line or call plays from the huddle or with no huddle at all.

Weis and Quinn could not have worked out any better to this point.
