QB question??

I think that Charlie was holding back the freshmen to preserve a year of eligibility. If BQ had been hurt for an extended period of time, there is no question in my mind that Charlie would have given one of the freshmen some PT. Sharpley is neither the present nor the future of this team.

I hope that is not the case; otherwise I would question Coach Weis' wisdom. Given that ND still had an outside chance of an NC shot right up until the Mich loss to OSU, not having his 2nd best QB getting game reps would be pretty myopic thinking. If Quinn had been hurt, and Jones or Frazier were really the Plan 'B', would have been ridiculous to be preserving both of their 5th years (especially with JC coming in this year, and likely top QBs in future years). In 4 years you'd expect that there will be tremendous depth at the QB position; why sacrifice 2006 for 1 guys' 5th year?

Then he'd better hope that Jones or Fraser don't apply for a 5th year, or The Emu will never get to play at all!

Haha!! You've got to be kidding!?!? If he is behind Jones and/or Sharpley after 2007, you can almost guarantee that he will be transferring.

Clausen can't get a 5th year since he was an EE, if I understand the system correctly.

that's not true. athletic eligibility doesn't coincide with undergraduate academic class standing. ie - virtually all, if not all, of our 5th year seniors are grad students.

similarly, just because clausen might be classified as a sophomore academically by the time the season starts (which would take a rather aggressive class load during the winter and summer sessions) doesn't mean that he had forfeited his opportunity to redshirt. if that was the case, what would be the incentive to enroll early?

I haven't seen it because it's on Insider, but ESPN is saying that BQ has dropped as well ...

Gotcha. I misunderstood, thanks for the clarification!

Sportscenter is on and they just had a piece about the next ND (and LSU) QB. They talked about Clausen but said that Jones could be the guy next year.

There is no way they know who the next QB will be, especially since Clausen has yet to practice. It's just another ploy to get people to watch SC.

I like jones as a quarterback, reminds me of vince young. But I think its going to be clausen because he has a better arm and is more accurate. He isnt even that slow is he?

Don't you have to be a grad student to even be considered for a 5th year at ND?

Yes, you must have earned your degree (or be on track to graduate when you apply for a
5th year), and you must be accepted into a grad program. I think the vast majority of players enter the MBA program.

Its obvious that he was saving their eligibility. Weis wasn't going to put Jones or Frazer in the game for mop up duty just to get them "game reps" even if one of them was better then sharpley, because it makes no sense to waste that year for no reason. Now if quinn had gotten a season ending injury then he would have re-evaluated the situation and the player that gave us the best chance to win would have played. No you don't just throw a year of eligibilty away if you don't have too, like I believe Willingham did with Samarzdjia by playing him for like 5 downs as a freshman. And for anyone out there that thinks JC sits for more then one year without getting playing time or transferring, your crazy. He won't sit and wait his turn if it comes down to him waiting 3 years to play. Plus, I think Weis wants him to win out, thats why he let Mustain go last year, he had his eyes on JC so he wasn't worried if the best QB last year came here or not. I see JC sitting this year and being in Weis' office like everyday this year learning and getting groomed for his red shirt freshman year. Unless he comes in and just blows the other 3 guys away in Spring and Fall practice. We will basically know who the top two guys are by the end of spring ball because I believe the plan is to cut the field down to two after spring ball and the starter be decided in Fall practice.
