With the emergence of Montana during the spring season, Rees was dropped to third string and received limited reps during practice. But that’s not to say he isn’t ready to compete for duties behind Crist when training camp opens this fall.
...
Ranked by Scout.com as only the No. 64 quarterback in the recruiting class, Rees wasn’t the hottest recruit on the board. But he finds himself in a great situation at Notre Dame, and he fits the Brian Kelly mold as a player with more potential than star power. Rees threw for 2,572 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior last season, and he worked predominately out of the shotgun, which will help his transition into the Irish spread offense.
“He's a very, very good athlete,” Kelly said while breaking down Rees film. “You can see here under duress, catch and throw. Gets the ball out there. He's got a strong arm. Can make the throws.”
Rees only saw limited action in the Blue-Gold Game, completing his one pass for one yard, not exactly the stuff of legends. But how Rees develops during fall camp is obviously much more important than is performance in a scrimmage game.
