El Paso's Eyes for the Irish...(
That Will Do: El Paso's Eyes for the Irish (with video))
Let's be truthful with each other. From the moment the Hyundai Sun Bowl lineup was announced, it was all about the Irish, wasn't it, El Paso?
You can hem and haw, you can blush, you can say you love the Hurricanes' uniforms...
Just stop. Admit it. Miami made the matchup spicier, but from the beginning this city was in love with Notre Dame.
It showed on shop marquees welcoming and exorting the Irish. "The U" might as well have been "The Who?" when it came to local signage.
It showed under a blue-gray December sky when temperatures hovered in the mid-30's and El Paso -- the ultimate fair-weather fandom because the weather is usually fair -- still wedged itself into the Sun Bowl to the tune of 54,021, the stadium's largest attendance ever.
UTEP couldn't pull this kind of crowd for a noon kickoff if it was 10-0 and nationally ranked.
And then there was the game -- a 33-17 Notre Dame win, and a local coronation for a school that might just start polishing its Golden Dome nationally with its new coach.
Don't think El Paso was ready to crown Brian Kelly? Take a close look at this picture...
Kelly Crown
"Besa me, soy un Irish!"
...
Nothing to be ashamed of for a city that is mostly Catholic. If BYU football is big in Utah and Texas Baptists boost for Baylor, El Paso and Notre Dame was a match made in...well, let's not go quite that far.
Although the Sun Bowl Association might beg to differ.
The Sun Bowl has been looking for Notre Dame's particular pot of gold for ages and has worked tie-ins to keep the Irish in its bailiwick.
Last year, Sun Bowl committeemen went gaga when Notre Dame became a big possibility, then were disappointed when Buffalo University dominoed their dreams by upsetting Miami of Ohio for the MAC championship, unleashing a series of unfortunate events that took the Irish away from El Paso.
Then, when votive candles lit the right fire a year later, the emotion in the Sun Bowl Association's offices was so overwhelming, executive director Bernie Olivas almost choked up making the announcement everyone was waiting for.

There have been a number of great old college fight songs played in El Paso's bowl game. Irish fan or not, that one was pretty special.
Was it all too saccharine? Maybe.
But just wait 'til the overnight television ratings are announced for this game. Here's betting you're not alone, El Paso...
