in a recent tom lemming chat in USA Today he said that ND was a darkhorse to land the nations #1 WR percy harvin. i guess with brady quinn coming back next year and with CW giving the irish a strong passing game percy harvin has started to look ND's way a little. does ND really have a shot at landing him?

No, I dont see it happening. Harvin has already cut his list to 5, and that is USC, Michigan, Florida, FSU, and Miami. He has never shown any strong interest in ND during this whole process. We have a better shot at Ausberry, which is very slim, than Harvin.

what about receivers for 07? I have heard that we have interest from some of the best in taht class like Hubbard, Clemons and maybe even Benn.

Harvin doesn't have an offer from ND.

I'm guessing he will go FSU or USC in the end.

He was also just suspended for their last game for being ejected from a previous game. Saw this in USA Today.

I'm guessing with that said, he probably belongs at Free Shoes or Spoiled Children.

I had been hoping that Quinn/Shark/MoSto excelling in the Weis Coast Offense would pique the curiousity of some of the premier WRs. I had hoped for receivers like Harvin and Hazleton and note they both only have 4 officials listed.

However, Hazleton trasferred this year to Hargrave Military and I don't think he went there to prep for the Academies. The usual reason is to bolster grades either to get up to minimum NCAA requirements or to improve upon marginal academic success so as to gain admission to schools with more stringent requirements. I've seen no grade/test info. I'd like to think he's studying his butt off to gain a nod from Saracino but have nothing to support that dream.

I have seen some academic info for Harvin

Harvin reports a 2.3 GPA/890 SAT (old version)-retest undecided--"I'd like to get a better score, but I think I'm fully qualified with the one that I have."
scout.com

That comment is reminescent of Carson Palmer and David Terrell from years past. Both wanted ND, Palmer was told to improve grades/test score but felt he didn't need to. Terrell was offered and verballed to ND but was told to retake his test to improve his score. He never retook the test and ended up at UM. Palmer went on to some fame as a QB for Southern Cal.

And for this reason, BGIF, we needn't worry about guys like David Ausberry and Micah Johnson from previous posts.

Harvin is considered the best player in America. ND has shown very little interest in him and the reason is obvious.

When CW and Company start going to Military Academies and JUCOs for guys, we'll know we're in trouble. But it won't ever happen.

There will be great players, like Harvin, Palmer and Terrell; that ND simply won't be able to have interest in, let alone offer.

It's a tad early for '07 WRs when we still have slots open in this class and they will be needed to be ready to play quickly. Stovall only has a few games left. McKnight and Smardzija will be gone after next season. Vaughn who was the prototype tall WR transferred preseason. ND's high advantage will soon be gone. I'd suspect CW would prefer to add a Smardzija type or healthy Shelton type in this class and add more just like them again in the Class of '11.

2007 would appear to need a focus on linebackers, wide receivers and d-line.

Hopefully those spots in 2006 fall into place in the next few months.

You know, I've really gone the way of the gun with this.

When I see a receiver under 6-2 I pretty much dismiss the guy, which is probably wrong. The NFL hybrid type receivers are now 6-4, 6-5 and 6-6. I guess we can thank Randy Moss for this.

I like the rangy, athletic ability of a the tall receivers. The two ND has this year make a strong case for this.

With Parris and Hord, Jackson would form a solid trio of tall, rangy guys with speed that can catch any throw.

I'm with ya, but Charlie seemed to do OK with some little guys in NE.

Going back to Harvin, the reason he got kicked out of that game was because someone spit in his face and he retaliated. That is totally understandable. He is qualified for ND and has been offered. There is really no real chance of getting him, but who knows. I wouldn't say he belongs at FSU or SC. Obviously, he could go anywhere and make an immediate impact. ND would be grateful to have him.

You have to add corners to that group...WE NEED CORNERS!!! Hell, we are 7 Deep at safety at least after this class...way too many. Gaines, Gordon, Brown, Bruton, Herring, Zbi, & Ndukwe is my count.

Jiggs, the number of ND touchdowns by Stovall and Sam because of their size confirms your thoughts. The DB's generally have to be small, quick, and fast and simply cannot handle these guys one on one.

We have 2 blue chippers coming in with this class in Darrin Walls and Raeshon Mcniel..do we need more depth? probably, do we have a lot of quality safties? maybe, but coach is having to deal with the last administrations recruiting mishaps i.e. no o-line, and no cover corners, but give him some time and he will turn around class by class

We talked about Harvin back in Sept. Many rated him the top player in the country. At that time he had not been offered by ND and I assumed Weis and CO. knew something about him which precluded the offer. Perhaps it was grades or information that Harvin would not consider ND. At any rate he was not offered at that time.

Another WR from VA. was offered--Damon McDaniel. He apparently chose another school or said no to ND because he is no longer on any of the ND lists.

If Harvin has been offered it is recent and there might have been some indication he would consider ND. He is a super WR and would be the best that ND ( or any other school) will get. Any other news on him?

Maybe some of those guys will swith to LB. I think it would be good to switch Ndukwe to LB next year and move Bruton into that apache role, he's much faster than Ndukwe, and will give us some extra speed in the backfield. Ndukwe can flat out hit, and would make a great Linebacker IMO. Plus with the loss of Mays, and Hoyte it would help us at LB.

I'm not sure I follow your moves.
LBs Mays and Hoyte gone.
Ndukwe to LB from S.
Bruton to Apache?

I assume you're moving Crum then too or did you mean Bruton to Duke's Safety spot?

If you're replacing Hoyte and Mays with Ndukwe and Crum, and Bruton goes to Apache, there's still another player, a Safety required.

Has Vernaglia vanished?

yeah, move Bruton to Dukes spot, put duke at LB, move crum to MLB, and have Brockington,or Smith play the other LB spot.

Vernaglia looks like he's far down the depth chart, isn't Bruton ahead of him

I think Crum's too small to play MLB. I think that's Smith's spot next year. Leave Crum where he is, but I could see the Duke coming down to play LB. Don't forget Washington though. Charlie said he was sliding down to LB in college.

Thanks for the update.

Who is reporting that he has an ND offer? I'm not finding him listed with one. If he does, he doesn't seem too interested anyway.

He's announcing, today, December 19th at 2:40 CST on ESPN News.

Harvin is down to SC and Florida, his teammate McDaniel is going to choose either Florida or Va Tech.

looks like Harvin and Mcdaniel are headed to Florida. Florida is a lock for the number 1 class IMO. Urban wasn't very impressive this year, but there comes a point when you can just out talent teams on the field, ala Mack Brown.
Its better that he's going to Florida, and not USC

I agree on all counts.

We'll see where they go.
