Pearl Harbor attack to be mourned - Yahoo! News

My wife's late grandfather was on a ship that left Pearl Harbor on December 6.

I have not been to the Memorial, but plan to some day.

To those who served and lost their lives in Pearl Harbor, I say thank you. To those who served in any war, I say thank you. To those who served or are serving, I say thank you.

I was fortunate to visit the Arizona memorial when I was a USAF navigator student many years ago. It is very moving...you stand on a platform built over the top of the sunken remains of the battleship that is submerged in shallow water...as you look down into the water you can see some of the ship and watch drips of oil which still to this day seep from the wreakage. The men who died on that ship (1177 sailors) are still entombed below...

I've been to Arlington National in DC, and that was an experience. I saw the changing of the guard, found Audie Murphy's headstone, and took tours. It was incredible.

Here's the oil coming up into the water.

That's wierd because my grandfather shipped out of Pearl Harbor on December 6th as well and had to circle around and come back.

I felt so stupid... I am a teacher and my class does bellringers everyday where they write about the topic given first thing each morning then we discuss... I was thinking all week and the 7th and how great an op. that was for a topic... write what you know about Peral Harbor then discuss...

so the 7th comes and I completely forget that morning... I have them write a fun one off the top of my head... "If grandma got ran over by a reindeer, what happened to grandpa?"

Then the morning announcement comes on and I was like... "ah... shit!"

didn't even have time to talk about it....
