Wonder if Urban will hire Craig Howard as his offensive coordinator.

Strong words about Urban's approach in comparison to Shula's. Tebow's parents went to UF and he has a brother there now. Even with all of that, Bama still has a shot.

Leak has one more year, Josh Portis is in waiting. Tebow could probably get into the mix quickly at Bama.

All that I've read of him leads me to believe Urban isn't one for small talk when it comes to recruiting. A little bit of Southern Hospitality goes a long way. Even Grandpa Bowden can still take over a living room.

Another 18 year old quarterback holding the hopes and dreams of our confederate friends in the palm of his hand.

I just love the fact that Meyer thinks that he is going to pick up these recruits just because he is Urban Meyer. NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!!!! That may have been the case last year when you had a Cinderella Utah team, but you are in the "Big Leagues" now fella. His name aint that significant anymore, and he aint a story anymore. He is just the coach of the third best Florida school again. Get used to it Urby, it aint gonna get much easier for you as long as you are down south.

Hell, from the sounds of it he may as well take the Ty-ger Willingham approach to recruiting. "Hello... ?Ty...? Wanna stick 18?

Actually if Tebow chooses UF...which I think he will....his rise to the top of the depth chart will be much quicker.....I think Josh Portis is transferring....jiggs can you confirm that?

I have no idea.

Portis made the biggest mistake of commiting to the coach and not the school. He verballed to Utah and then followed Pope to Florida.

If you've ever seen a Letter of Intent, it states right on it that you are committing to the institution and no other entity. Not in so many words, but you get the idea. The coaching profession being what it is, a kid had better think about a school and how much he likes it MINUS FOOTBALL. In other words, imagine the school without football or football without the coach.

It would not surprise me if he did, but I don't follow UF close enough to know. I have heard that Schaefer kid that was at Tennessee might be heading to Gainesville, so add him into the mix....who knows?

31, The Pope was getting big time guys to go to Utah. He beat the big three rivals of Gatorville this year, so I've got to give him credit for that. But you are right: Urban Meyer is not bigger than Florida Gator Football. He's an instrument of it.

according to Josh's mom he's transferring. Big loss for them because they only have Leak for one more year, and one of their backup QB's will probably end up switching positions.

This leads me to believe Tebow will be a gator, he'll be the starter by his second season, maybe even next year, throw in the fact that both parents went to Florida.

Also possible Leak could enter the draft this year, he won't be a first rounder, but he probably won't improve his stock much with another year in Meyer's system, he's not a fit. His father recently hinted this in an article, but I doubt he leaves.

Tide vs. Gators for Tebow won't even come close to ND vs. SC for Clausen.

You've got to figure this will be the biggest story of 2007 and it has already begun.

Too much hype worries me. I think the verbals this year have all been pretty low key and modest.

Probably better that way.

Well put Jiggs. My thought was that he was getting great kids to join him in Utah, but he is up against an entirely different kind of beast in trying to recruit these Florida kids away from Miami and Florida State. The only school he was really recruiting hard against in Utah was, at best, BYU. I do give credit where credit is due. He has pulled in some good, young talent, but do you foresee this kind of success recruiting year in and year out for the next couple of years, especially if he is losing 3-4 games a year? I don't think so Pope!

31, the thing with Urban is that he's young and has a presence. Florida will always be Florida, no matter who is coach there. Zook recruited well there, but didn't win. We must also keep in mind Signing Day is still a little under two months away, so UM and FSU will still have time to sneak into the picture.

Meyer's personality and the South could be interesting recruiting. In David Claerbaut's "Recruiting Confidential", there is a whole chapter and several other pages devoted to Urban while he was at BGSU recruiting the author's son. Perhaps he has changed some in the last three years, but all that I've read leads me to believe he's the same Pope.

Visalia (Calif.) College of the Sequoias quarterback Brent Schaeffer made a trip to Big Ten country this past weekend with an official visit to Wisconsin.

"It went good," Schaeffer said. "I got to talk a lot of football with the coaches. I really liked the strength coach. I met a lot of players. And they have nice facilities."

While in Madison, Schaeffer's player host was Wisconsin freshman linebacker Elijah Hodge.

"We talked about how everything is going there," Schaeffer said. "He said it's going good for him. He's anxious to get on the field."

When asked what he liked most about his visit to Wisconsin, Schaeffer said, "I liked the coaches. I really like coach Bielema. I've known him since my sophomore year at Deerfield Beach (Fla.) High School. I get along with him real well.

"He talked about the opportunity at Wisconsin and what he's trying to do. He said they're going to try to win the Big Ten and national championship next year."

Schaeffer has now made official visits to Wisconsin and North Carolina State.

"I go to Ole Miss Jan. 14," he said. "And I'll visit Florida sometime in January, probably the week after Ole Miss.

"As of right now that's my four. I think I'll take all four visits before I decide."

When asked who his favorite is, Schaeffer said, "I don't have one right now. I'd say North Carolina State, Wisconsin, and Florida are my top ones."

The 6-foot-2 and 190 pound Schaeffer, a five star quarterback in the Rivals.com player rankings and the No. 3 junior college prospect, will have three years to play two seasons at his new college.

Schaeffer threw for 2976 yards this season for the College of the Sequoias. He connected for 40 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Schaeffer also rushed for 854 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Jigga I totally agree with all above. ESPECIALLY the HYPE notion. I just keep having flashbacks to Ron Pawlus and the hype....although I don't think that CDub would be as stubborn as Lou and recruit a kid that's not going to fit HIS system and then try to force a ploddingly slow square peg (i.e. a drop back QB) into a round hole (slick option QB)....

HOWEVER, I do not believe that CDub would go after Clausen this hard if he didn't think the kid had the talent

This is sick:

Rumors still swirl that it will come down to Florida and Alabama, but Tebow has never cofirmed that. However, he did have 'Bama head coach Mike Shula in his house Monday for more than 12 hours.

"We talked a lot, broke down film and just got to know him a lot better as a family," he said. "That was the longest visit I've had but there was a lot to do and it was a good visit."

12 hours?!!! Are you kidding me?! Does that not qualify as an obsession?

When I joined the site the recruiting cycle was just heating up this year and I enjoyed following the posts and was especially happy when a recruit selected ND. We were all excited with Weis and the success he was having.

As the year has progressed I have been annoyed by the HYPE just as you have. As this is the first time I have followed the recruiting of these athletes I realize how nieve I was. This is not a clean cut game played by amateurs. It is a huge business engineered by professionals whose careers and livelyhood depend on it. They are paid huge sums to secure athletes who will win games for them and make huge amounts of money for their schools.
There is no high ground in this business. Getting the player is the only measure of success.

The HYPE is played on both sides. It has been argued on this site that the press conferences set up by the players to announce their choice is their "day in the sun". They have been encouraged by the schools they choose so that the maximum publicity can be garnered. It has been argued on this site that that is "publicity 101". Well, if that isn't the heart of HYPE, someone has to redefine it for me.

I can only believe this situation will worsen. I believe the Tebow recruitment was orchestrated by Urban to secure maximum publicity for Fla. AND THAT IS WHAT HE IS PAID TO DO.

I further belive that Weis knows that he is in a "do or die" situation where the only thing that matters in the long run is getting the player. He is playing against some ruthless coaches who understand this too.

The HYPE that I deplore is an integral part of the system and will never be removed. The Clausen saga is just beginning and will continue til the Feb. signing in 2007. And don't think for a minute that only USC and ND will be in on this. He is the biggest fish and the angling will be cutthroat.

Only one man's negative opinion!

Big Don, recruiting is an industry. It has become separate from college sports themselves and become it's own entity.

I don't think schools cheat as much as they used to because if you do something illegal, it is going to get out. Internet, message boards, the technology instant info society won't allow it to be wrapped up for very long.

No matter how warm a coach is, no matter what they say or how they come across....they are doing what serves their own best interests. Some are more malicious and deceitful about it than others.

Urban strikes me as an "at all costs" kind of guy. Weis is a bit of a different sell: here it is. Yours if you want it. But I'm not kissing your ass. If Sam Young goes to Florida, so what? If McCoy goes to SC, so what. Weis moves on.

I like the low key, modest recruiting season thus far. Aside from the Arkansas situation, nothing exciting has really occured yet. I imagine it will stay that way.

Anyone catch the documentary on ESPN 2 last night about Tebow?

Couple of observations, and I'll be kind since it was only one hour. Based on what I saw:

1. Mrs. Tebow seems a little strange.

2. For some reason, he came across to me as a kid that might pack up and leave at the first sign of adversity.

3. Good baseball player. Something to consider.

Take documenaries for what they're worth. You see what you see, no more no less.

He will probably make the cover of the 2006 Florida Gator Football media guide.

I'm not sure what separates him from Berlin or Leak commiting to Florida, but for some reason this is bigger to them than anything that's ever happened down there.

I can only guess that Tebow is FROM Florida whereas the other two were from Louisiana and North Carolina.

Hey, when you suicide recruit one guy at one position without a contingency plan, you reap what you sow.

Now they're going to a few other guys, with these kids knowing they're the second choice.

Weis offered Frazer, Mustain, Jones, Aaron Smith (Pitt) and Tyler Lyon (Arizona). The three ND didn't get all verballed after the two that did. He had a backup plan in place.

Jiggs, I believe he also offered Tebow very early. It looks like the recruiting never got started. Guess Tebow said "no way".

What I found most interesting is that Tebow is HOME SCHOOLED, but in Florida home schooled kids can compete in high school athletics with a school even though they don't attend.

Tebow is also a very religious Christian.

Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with these things. There isn't at all. But I have a feeling Gainesville might come as a bit of a culture shock to him. He's going to see some things that he hasn't even come close to being exposed to.

SEC tailgating is unlike anything I was ever a part of (Ole Miss 2002, The Grove).
