Carroll likes Trojans' prospects over NFL return

With a chance to win a third consecutive national championship with his No. 1 Trojans, coach Pete Carroll told ESPN Radio 710 in Los Angeles that he will not interview for any jobs outside of USC this year.

In an interview on "The Big Show with Mason and Ireland" Friday, Carroll said:

"I'm going to have the chance to recruit eight or nine first-round draft picks. In the NFL you can get one a year. So we're really excited about the place we are, I'm happy to be here."

ESPN Radio: "Does that mean you're going to pass on the chance to interview for any jobs outside of SC this year?"

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any jobs."

ESPN Radio: "Wow."

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any of them."

The Trojans are 12-0 this season and haven't lost a game since Sept. 27, 2003. Since Oct. 6, 2002, USC is 45-1. In those 45 victories, only five were decided by less than a touchdown.

As a college head coach, Carroll is 42-9 (all at USC).

Carroll was the head coach of the New England Patriots for three seasons (1997-99) and New York Jets for one year (1994).

He guided the Patriots into the playoffs in his first two seasons. Carroll's record as an NFL coach was 33-31.

Good, I'm glad he'll still be there for the 4 loss season USC is having next year when Leinart and Bush are gone. USC fans won't be able to blame it on a coaching transition year now.

I don't know why he would want to go pro with the talent he has in Southern California and the fact that he has already had one unsuccessful go around in the NFL before.

Leinart, Bush, White, Byrd and Smith will all be gone. A few o linemen too if I recall.

By the time ND faces them, SC will be better. There is too much talent sitting around. They'll reload. But they will miss this group that has been so successful.

Never say never:
Carroll's reps probe NFL posts with operations control
ESPN.com news services
Coach Pete Carroll said earlier this week he would not interview for jobs outside of USC this year.
But it turns out there might be some wiggle room in that decision.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Sunday that Carroll's representatives are sending out feelers for NFL jobs that would give the Trojans' coach control of football operations and $6 million a year.
Would Pete Carroll leave the USC sidelines for an NFL post with power?
Carroll told ESPN Radio 710 in Los Angeles on Friday that he will not interview for any jobs outside of USC, with whom he has a chance to win a third consecutive national championship, this year.
Mortensen reported Sunday that the NFL explorations by Carroll's agents might be simply an effort to get Carroll a new contract, one similar to that of Notre Dame's Charlie Weis.
Weis signed a 10-year contract extension believed to be worth approximately $3.5 million per year with the Irish earlier this season, making him the highest paid coach in college football.

You know what, if the situation and the MONEY are right, he'll have his ears and eyes WIDE OPEN. You'd be a fool not to.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is saying Poodle wants $6MIL a year and operations control for an NFL job.

With his NFL record, I don't think so. This is leverage to revamp his SC deal so he can get Weis dollars.

I think it still gnaws at the "Poodle" that he wasn't successful in the NFL. What more does he have to prove at the college level?? Plus he is losing the core of the team that has provided this fantastic winning streak. There is probably only one way for Carroll and USC to go from hear on out ...and that's down. If the right deal comes along, I think Pete heads to the NFL. I just hope he's not stupid enough to go to the "graveyard of coaches", the Lions. On second thought, that might just be the place for him to go. It would be the complete opposite of USC and he would have no place to go but up and then he could say he "made it" in the NFL.

In any event, I think Carroll goes to the pros either this year or next.

I can't imagine he has any genuine loyalty to USC, but he has set himself up to become a coaching legend there. The success he has had in the college ranks, compared to his NFL run, is proof of how much easier the college game is. The only thing the NFL can offer is more money. He could win ten or more games a year for another decade and they would sell posters of him in the bookstore.

I don't think arguments about losing the core of the team are particularly compelling. Losing a large percentage of his coaching staff last year (including Chow and Orgeron) didn't hurt him one bit. And Leinart is nowhere near as good as Palmer was. They are a juggernaut until somebody knocks them out.
