Looks like the massive shit storm is about to start... This was inevitable and it couldn't happen to a better school. Geiger was bound to go after the recent booster involvement and the way he made Clarett out to be a liar.

Awwwww... too bad. Time to raid the OSU pantry, boys.

---

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger is retiring after a decade featuring some of the Buckeyes' greatest victories and biggest embarrassments.

From the time Maurice Clarett led the Buckeyes to the national championship in 2002, the school's athletic department has been beset by NCAA investigations of its football and basketball programs.

The school announced the retirement in a news release Wednesday. Geiger, 65, and university president Karen Holbrook were scheduled to appear at a news conference later in the day.

It was not immediately known when Geiger's retirement would take effect. Geiger, who has been AD since 1994, has 17 months left on his contract.
After leading Ohio State to the national title as a freshman, Clarett was suspended for lying to investigators during an NCAA probe of allegations that he received improper benefits from a family friend.

Last month, the school imposed a one-year postseason tournament ban on its men's basketball team over an alleged $6,000 payment to a recruit by former coach Jim O'Brien.

Ohio State president Karen Holbrook said the firing of O'Brien on June 8 was the first step in appeasing NCAA investigators. She and Geiger said more penalties may be coming.

In football, quarterback Troy Smith was suspended for the Alamo Bowl for accepting benefits from a booster.

Clarett has accused football coach Jim Tressel of setting him up with cars, said boosters provided him with no-show jobs and that Ohio State professors gave breaks to football players.

A search of court records by The Associated Press revealed at least 14 arrests involving 14 football players in the period following Tressel's hiring in January 2001 and May 2004. Others, such as Smith and running back Lydell Ross, were suspended for at least one game following other disciplinary problems.

"Mission Viejo (Calif.) offensive lineman Kevin Bemoll verbally committed to Ohio State months ago. But due to the off-the-field allegations at OSU, he is now considering other schools."

...while it doesn't show ND having any place with him right now...it would be interesting to see if Weis offers him anything

I have heard a lot of people say they won't touch a school like tOSU, but they have to if even half this stuff is true.

This isn't quite on par with the Pony Express of SMU, but it does rival Miami's infractions from the early 90s. Now they have players currently on the team bringing allegations against the school, accompanying those of their former players?

Further, those classes they offered, including the football-specific classes, should embarass tOSU on an institutional level. Its a good thing the state certifies itself.

The sinister side of me wants to see the following: tOSU gets hit with the maximum probation. They then fire Tressel and replace him with either Nieuheisel or Erikson, ensuring tOSU stays filthy for years to come.

Alex Boone is a guy I'd like to steal from them....

He stated explicitly that he is an Ohio State guy, whether winning, losing, or suspended.

He didn't go there because of the coaching staff. He won't leave because of them either.

Clarett, can you say overrated.
I don't know about that. I got to watch most of their games and even went to two of them (free tickets) and he was a special kid. He could have ended up a GREAT college player.

The worst thing of this is it looks like Ohio State will get off with just a warning, or at least that is what ESPN is reporting.

Yeah, they don't win a National Title without Clarett. But he's such an unknown when it comes to the NFL. He could either be great like McGahee, be a bust like Lawrence Phillips...or have a productive but not spectacular career (see Reggie Brooks).

Clarett reminds me of Ron Dayne for some reason, won't amount to much. Unless he goes to the Broncos, were ever running back rushes for a 1000 yards+ lol

yeah, the guy was a train wreck. I don't think Clarett is that bad, just misguided.
And Ohio State definitley shares a lot of the blame for this...not just Mo.

Clarett wasn't even close to phillips. These kids have so many people coming at them with money and gifts. He got put through the ringer.some just some not.Thats the problem with the media today they can paint any picture they want. The good thing is it is all starting to come out that it isn't all on him.Plus we may steal some recruits.

CLEVELAND -- Payments for a cell phone used by former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett might have led to the suspension of quarterback Troy Smith.

A report Tuesday in The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer said sources close to Ohio State and Smith told the paper that Smith used the money from Springfield booster Robert Baker to pay an overdue bill for a phone Smith's mother obtained for Clarett, a friend of her son's.

Smith; his mother, Tracy Smith; Clarett; and Baker could not be reached for comment. Clarett's mother, Michelle Clarett, said she knows nothing about the matter.

Smith missed the Alamo Bowl because of a disciplinary suspension. Ohio State didn't specify what improper benefits Smith might have received.

On Monday, outgoing OSU athletic director Andy Geiger expressed regret that Smith hadn't involved the school when Clarett's phone bill came due and repeated that Smith's suspension likely will include the 2005 opener against Miami (Ohio), according to the Plain Dealer.

Geiger cited federal student privacy laws in declining to comment on specifics of the phone scenario, the newspaper reported.

Was just wondering if any1 saw this - its a joke proving that OSU can fill up investigators pockets and get away with things - heck they could just pay the kids an NFL salary openly if this is what i think it is http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1967411

Isnt this that the NCAA investigation found "nothing" - not sure but if it is i am really rooting for whoever the heck OSU plays next year eeven if it is USC

And how. Clarett is nothing more than a coddled, whining primadonna that always got his way. He screwed himself by lying to the police. Credibility completely destroyed. His durability is a big question mark because he played one season of college football, and it wasn't a full season at that. That team remained unbeaten the following year until going up to Wisconsin and losing on a fluke play. Before we start lighting fires, I think that there has to be punishment given to both the players involved and the schools that are violating rules. The penalties just aren't stiff enough. THIS is why people feel ND is at a disadvantage. If violators were given stiffer sentences, maybe kids would think twice about taking the do-ray-me.
