In Eric Hansen article on MSNBC today he makes a great point.

"There are no perfect parallels. But the nation’s No. 1 team, Alabama, was 7-6 in 2007. And Ball State coach Brady Hoke, presiding over a storybook season at 11-0, went 4-8, 2-9. 4-7, and 5-6 before finally breaking through with a winning season last year -- barely (7-6)"

Got me thinking of other coaches who have tanked at the start but gone on to better things. Joe Torre was terrible with the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals. With the Yankees and a talented team with just enough veterans he became a hall of fame coach. Bobby Cox first stint with the Braves with nothing to write home about. In his second stint, bolstered by a group of young pitching arms and a great pitching coach He became another Hall of Fame coach. Mike Krzyzewski was not the genius he is today his first 3 years at Duke. If my memory serves me right, he was ready to get the axe. His players that he recruited finally matured in his fourth year and he has not looked back since. Nick Saban was pretty average at MSU, except for one big year 1999, but give him the horses he had at LSU and now Alabama and he is one of the top college coaches.

So is this enough evidence to give CW one more year? Jeff Samardzija, thinks so as his interview on ESPN First Take proves. I think with the proper adjustments to his staff he could turn this around. The talent is there, they need to learn to play 60 minutes, never quit, and how to win.

Interesting. There's word that representatives of Notre Dame have contacted Urban Meyer.

ND really needs that big win. Either a win over a top team or a come from behind win that teaches them (and proves to them) that they can win at any time. All the great teams can win ugly, but first they have to learn how to win period. I think the article makes a good point, but the flip side is that you never know. He could turn it around next year or five years from now if given the chance. He could never turn it around. In some ways it's just a crap shoot. But Weis can recruit, he gets the kids to class and through graduation, it just remains to be seen if he can get it to come together on Saturday. There are problems in many areas, but I think the main one is mental. Not only for the team, but for the coaches too.

No way.

Programs can't contact coaches with a current CFB job without getting permission from that schools athletic director. news like that (Florida's AD giving ND officials permission to talk to Urban Meyer) while they are looking to finish a run at the NC this year is guaranteed to make the news, and it is absolutely unthinkable (except by the rumor mongers) that Florida's AD would allow it.

I've been saying this forever!

Alabama's record last yeat in the regular season was 6-6 and in 2006 it was also 6-6.

Everyone wants that big win but it's not gonna happen without the horses!.

We have em but they are all young!

Anyone who wants Weis out this year has unrealistic expectations! Do your research so you understand the way college football works and how important recruiting is.

A fine example of why we are struggling is:

Our starting TE is a freshman! What happened to all the other TE's? Do your research!

Why is our best WR Floyd, a freshman? Where is Hord and Jackson, they kept getting injured!

Are best RB is a Sophomore, that's pretty young! If aldridge would have never got injured it may have been a different story!

Our offensive line has not done well but is a team effort and without an experienced TE, WR, and RB it will struggle. Throw in a young QB and it will definitely struggle!

I think we all know that they are talented and we have seen glimpses of "WOW" but we need to realize that they are young.

Let's wait until next year before we freak out! This team is learning but as a young team do you think it is easy to play with so much pressure. I think next year will be a completely different story and we will shut people up!

And all the others that say we have the same number of seniors as these other teams is a BAFOON!!! Our seniors are 2star recruits, 3 star recruits, and walk-ons.

I guess what I am saying is shut up until you do your research! If all your gonna do is watch MTV of sports(espn) to get your news your just getting drama and biased bullshit!

GO Notre Dame for life!!!!!!!!!

Alabama aldo didn't lose to teams like Syracuse in 2006 and 2007 (except for maybe Mississippi State). Their schedule was much harder than ours in both of those years, and their losses came from powerhouse teams like LSU, Florida, Georgia. I bet the 2006 and 2007 Alabama teams would be at least 8-3, probably 9-2 with loses to Michigan State and North Carolina.

We all know and agree that our team is young. That is a given. What is disturbing is the lack of skill displayed year in, year out by the O-line. Combine that with the questionable (at best) coaching and giving away lead after lead. Youth or not, ND is very poorly coached.

I'm thinking they are well coached, but offense is being coached some imaginary system. Haywood, Latina, and Powlus are scapegoats.

CW's imaginary offensive offense seems to be a marriage between him and his QB, and Eff the rest. Seems to work better when team is older. He already won with older QB and receivers.

I guess wait and see.

(Aside - ND BBall pissin me the hell off right about now. Harangoody pretty good. Why does team have names printed in back?)

Michael Bradley said on College Football Now on the NFL Network that Weis is out on Monday and the rumor is that Urban Meyer is in....Not sure how to take that...but then all the rumors on espn abou Tim Tebow now considering leaving early make this sound even more likely.

I could not agree more with AZ Irish. I have said numerous times, we have been playing shorthand the past two years. CW did not become a fool overnight. He took a team dominated by juniors and seniors in 05 and 06 and won. His loses outside of MSU in 05 were to teams that were deep, loaded with upperclassmen and teams expecting to win, not hoping to win(UM, USC, OSU, LSU). Last year I believe we played with the least amount of scholarship players of any FBS team. If the numbers are up they are up because we add more freshmen. Not every freshmen is Micheal Floyd. We are young and hoping to win. 2007 was not only bad record wise, but it put that shadow of a doubt in the players mind that the could win a game any game. They have to get their confidence back and will to win. Navy and Syracuse proved one thing and one thing only, you have to play every play, every minute with desire and intensity.

Meyer coming to Notre Dame. Why now all of a sudden? Money? Can you talk to a coach in college before the season is over?

I can see how info like this would be floating around message boards, but how does it end up on a sports news show? There's no way this has been verified....there would be much more chatter about it.

I'm not saying Meyer wouldn't come here, but I just can't see it happening at this point. Florida is just 2 wins away from playing for a NC. IF Meyer would consider coming here, I personally would think it would have to be in January sometime, and not next Monday. I would be completely surprised if this came to fruition.

That's about the way I see it - No rose colored glasses either.
Beer goggles. Has anyone ever seen beer goggles on a deer?
Too much alcohol turns my nose red and shiny and glowy. I'm thinking about applying to the North Pole as lead sled driver. If only they would let me join in their games.

(Avatar mug shut is pre-alcohol. I gained a few pounds since then, mostly muscle. Nose is a bit redder. I'm Bambi dammit. Current goal is to go around the world in 80 days. Hey - I can dream...)
