i don't really see how anybody can make predictions for ANY team next season at this point. there's too much that can change with players leaving for the draft, injuries, transfers, dropouts, ineligibles (academically or otherwise), spring practices, etc.

this sort of thread would be best suited for some time after the the spring game. then we can have a legitimate conversation about ND's chances for 2007.

People are just having fun speculating. What we predict has no real bearing on anything anyway, it's just for fun.

It's kind of nice not expecting too much for next year, not as much stress as this year. If ND gets seven wins(not including bowl game) that would be good enough for me.

I was listening to ESPN radio a little while ago and Beano was talking to the host (can't recall if it was Dan Patrick or not) and they got into their thoughts where Michigan would start out. They had USC #1 and Michigan #2. Anyway, ND came in the mix of the conversation and the host said h had them at 43rd. Not sure if he was being sarcastic or not. Beano said that he sees "ND having 3 losses for sure".

ND will be down some (due to inexperience), but I don't see them being @ 43rd in the country starting out!

"People are just having fun speculating. What we predict has no real bearing on anything anyway, it's just for fun."

understood.

judging from your join date, you've yet to endure an off season on irish envy. trust me. there is plenty of time for speculation. the days will drag by. it's worth saving these sorts of topics if only to keep them fresh for the times when we'll need something to talk about.

conversely, LSU is a much more pressing topic, and i've yet to see as much analysis on this board as i would expect, barring the overwhelming sentiment that we're going to get kicked in the nuts. is this foregone conclusion the reason that we've got a handful of threads looking ahead to next year already?

And the speculation will change from day to day for the next 9 months I'm sure.

As far as LSU goes, haven't you heard? They have speed. There have been some good threads breaking down the game I thought.

Ah yes, that lovely time period that begins sometime in mid-February after signing day, until sometime in August when we can almost hear the kick off. Those months do go by pretty slow.

No World Cup this year unfortunately. Although we did have some nice threads about the WC on here this summer.

I think that next year will be determined by how all of the young guys step up and respond, especially on the O-Line. I think the return of a couple of key 5th year seniors is also necessary

I agree with IrishDon103 A 10-2 year would be outstanding and a BCS bowl game to top it off. Go Irish!

The team will have more talent than its had in the past 5 years, but with a young everything they will struggle.

BUt dont we all sorta get this funny feeling that Weis is already preparing somewhat for next year? thinking about gameplans, depth, etc?

And further, did anyone else have the creeping suspicion that the previous regime showed up in mid august, sat down at the desk, and logged onto und.com to see which team was first on the schedule?

The scedule is as follows, here's what I think
S 01 GEORGIA TECH - W (tough win)
S 08 @ Penn State - W (morelli will have more experience but we should win)
S 15 @ Michigan - push (this game will determine where our team is at)
S 22 MICHIGAN ST. - W (stanton is gone, I think? we better win)
S 29 @ Purdue - push (strongly toward W)
O 06 @ UCLA - push (it's gonna be tough)
O 13 BOSTON COLLEGE - W (I hate BC another must win)
O 20 SOUTHERN CAL - L ( I hate to put up an L but, u have to respect USC)
N 03 NAVY - W
N 10 AIR FORCE - W
N 17 DUKE - W
N 24 @ Stanford - W

anybody else but me getting tired of our pansy end of year schedule? i totally agree with us playing service acadamies, but we should limit it to one per season. and duke??? we might as well put a division 2A team on the list. no wonder we go on a 7 game win streak only to get pounded by SC or BCS at the end. we need to balance the shcedule

Definitely the toughest part about being independent....getting legitimate annual contenders to schedule us during conference play.

Not really sure what can be done about this. The Big ten doesnt typically have a bye week so we cant move a UM or PSU to the middle/end of the season so the rest is pretty much a crapshoot trying to schedule middling teams like UNC and Stanford hoping they might actually be decent when they finally show up on the schedule.

i hear you. we could try and get some acc/sec teams. big east even.

it seems that our schedule has gotten soft in the last 5 years.

I think we have a good chance to steal that game in ann arbor (this year we just fell asleep or something) I think we could end up 11-1, we have usc at home so who knows what could happen. I think we will win at least 9. If we go 11-1 we could have a shot at the national title. I don't see any team going undefeated.

As much as I hate both scUM and USC I could both of these teams have a CHANCE of going undefeated. Both will be returning a wealth of experienced talent. The PAC 10 isn't that great, therefore, that helps USC and Michigan has tO$U at home next year, which helps them. My prognostication would be that the Irish will end up either 9-3 or 8-4, primarily due to inexperience throughout the depth chart.

I don't think next year will be a "bad" year. I think 9 wins would be great for a rebuilding year.

I know I'm in the minority here, but if we win the first 3, we are going undefeated.

Everyone thought we would be down in '93 without Bus, Mirer, Brooks, etc. ......

I think we need to start Demetrius Jones. With a shaky OL and unproven WR's, we need a QB that can scramble and create opportunities by making time for the receivers to get open until the OL finds some consistency. A freshman drop-back passer is going to get killed against that Michigan and USC D next year.

Did you ever think there would ever again be QB controversy in South Bend?

He could be...but as he showed with USC, you can prep all you want, but in the end it's about execution.

I think it's great that posters are projecting between 7-5 and 10-2 in a rebulding year. It looks like 9-3 to me. And 2008 will be better. ND is back.

I would guess 7-5 or 8-4. I have zero confidence in what I've seen from Sharpley so far. Although, BQ was no superstar his freshman year.

I don't even think we can begin to pretend anything about Sharpley at all.

He threw 2 passes all year?

True, but even at the end of the game in clock killing mode, he looks like a dear in the headlights.

How so? He is told to hand off and he does...there really is nothing more to it than that.

He was allowed to throw twice, period.

I honestly can't imagine one scenario where we learned ANYTHING about him...

You're probably right. He just looked spooked to me. Whoever it is has big shoes to fill.

Yeah, that's a huge understatement. Man, talk about a tough situation to walk into. However, I think it will be pretty exciting. The next QB knows what he is getting into...and will be as prepped as can be.

Our QBs are now really Weis'. Trained by him, etc. Quinn had to UNLEARN stuff. These guys are getting the basics from Day1.

That has to be good somehow!!!
