Next ND DC and When

We've all been harping about how bad the ND defense has been for the last 1 1/2 seasons and it doesn't look good for the balance of the year. We haven't seen any improvement statistics wise when comparing to the same 1 1/2 years under Tyrone. IMO, Minter and Lewis are now on the "hot seat" with Weis. I don't think Charlie will stand for this crap much longer. Therefore, who do you guys think will be the next DC for ND and when will it happen?? If I were you, I'd leave Tenuta out of it because I believe he's already a lock to replace John L at MSU next year as head coach.

How about we see what happens with better personnel in the front seven before taking anybody's jobs from them.

Weis respects lewis so ridiculously much. lewis was basically the only person in the NFL who could successfully, and consistently, scheme against weis's gameplan. with worse players, nonetheless. no way weis gets rid of him.

"We've all been harping ..."

Nice hyperbole but not true. Not close to true. Most of the harping seems to be coming from fans who keep complaining that the LBs aren't leading the team in tackles when ND's played one LB, one RB and 5 or 6 DBs as the base defense.

We haven't seen any improvement statistics wise when comparing to the same 1 1/2 years under Tyrone.

Do you have those stats available comparing Ty first 1 1/2 years with Charlie's?

I have a stat for you in the first half of the second season Ty went 2-4, Charlie 5-1. Sagarin ranked ND with the toughest '06 schedule in the nation through the first 5 games.

In the one loss, ND gave up the ball 5 times against UM, I don't recall any of Minter's or Lewis's boys giving the ball away, do you?

Davie left Ty with a number of talented defenders particularly at LB, Curry, Goolsby, Hoyte, and Mays. Feel free to list the LBs, Ty recruited that Minter gets to play.

IMO, Minter and Lewis are now on the "hot seat" with Weis. I don't think Charlie will stand for this crap much longer. ...

Minter and Lewis were handpicked by Weis. If CW disapproved of the way Minter has the Safties backstopping the LBs, he'd tell him to change it, and if he didn't, CW would change it himself. Same for Lewis's CBs. They're working with limited resources and just went 5-1 through the toughest part of the schedule.

EXCELLENT round-up, BGIF. Someone add to his rep for me please.

It seems like every damn week now, there's yet another "Fire Minter!" thread. Meanwhile, Minter's defense has allowed us to go 14-4 using nothing but the leftovers from the previous coaching regime and a converted running back.

I'm not exactly ready to nominate Minter for Coach Of The Year, but for cryin' out loud, you don't fire a defensive coordinator over a 14-4 record. Not yet!

OK, BGIF. You wanted the statistics. Here they are and they tell the whole story. This is based on Willingham's last 18 games and Weis' first 18 games. These statistics are courtesey of UHND.

Win/Loss Willingham/Baer 9-9
Weis/Minter 14-4

Total Defense Willingham/Baer 6,498 yds (361.0 ypg)
Weis/Minter 6,849 yds (380.5 ypg)

Scoring Defense Willingham/Baer 422 points (23.4 ppg)
Weis/Minter 436 points (24.2ppg)

Minter's stats are worse in all cases. Also, as we all remember, Willingham's offense was terrible, which caused the defense to be on the field for long periods of time. On the other hand, in most cases, Weis' offense controls the time of possession which means the Minter defense is on the field less. That makes the above numbers all the more damning. The won/loss record is due to the Weis offense scoring more than the Willingham offense did.

Charlie took the same players Willingham had and turned the offense completely around. Minter took the same players Willingham had and did nothing with them, NO IMPROVEMENT. In fact, based on the above numbers, SLIGHTLY WORSE. It all points to coaching and/or scheme.

Now tell me we don't need a change!

I hate the personel argument. there are teams with much worse talent with much better defenses. Sure, give me OSU's talent from last year and i'd probably be a good DC right? but AJ Hawk was made, he wasn't the Chris Donald of his class. If we have 2 guys from the D drafted in the first two rounds we'll rehash this argument and find a D devoid of NFL prospects that is doing very well.

Lewis stays though. its not his fault. the scheme is poor though, i dont like minter's resume on the field so far. Be aggressive B-E aggressive

the few times we got overly aggressive our DBs got burned for the deep ball.

pussy's thats right i said it...minter sucks!!!! put that in your pipe and smoke it...we lucked out like a fat rat... It's not the players its the scheme it sucks...atleast we tried to blitz today dam if that wasn't refreshing...and the results....we stopped them dead! A defense is supposed to be nasty not passive...passive is only good when relating to your income not on a dam football field....

If you question the administration in Iraq, you are a terrorist supporter.
If you question the ND team, you are not a fan.

Duh guys, just give up. Whether or not you have intelligent arguments is moot, we must blindly accept this until our dissent is the majority. Go darius, go quinn, go inaccurate deep ball throws.

UCLA improved from 90 in defense to 9 with a new DC. But that was a fluke, right?
We are improving this year on defense, slighlty, our offense is actually our achilles heel.

Fire Minter! Fire Lewis! I saw that UCLA TE blow right through the two of them and then ramble in for the TD. Damn non-tackling sons of bitches.

What I liked most about the Baer defenses was their ability to hold USC under 50 points. Oh how loved those days.

Good grief, our defense in the 2nd half today was AWFUL! UCLA scored 3 POINTS in the 2nd half! Just awful. Fire Minter!

(Walks away, grumbling under his breath...)

I hope people are not complaining about our defense against UCLA? They held them to 3 points in the second half and got turnovers. We should be talking about the OL, not the defense. The OL could not protect Brady or open any holes for the running game. I think that is a much bigger problem for ND not Minter and the D.

Heh, heh. I think our defense played well last night. I know that people will still call for Minter's head until he shutouts 3 consecutive ranked teams, but we are improving. If only we could get some depth at DL.

What people really need to be complaining about is our O-line. Damn, 4 seniors, and it seems like 4 sophomores out there.

Although the O-line did a great job in that last drive.
