Dinnah is served! At any time and as often as you wish. I can't hear "Early Bird Special" without drifting back to 1977 when I was working my ass off to open B. Dalton Booksellers store #259. Three months of working 12 to 14 hour days without a day off took its toll. I'd become a breakfast fixture at the restaurant across the way. My standing order was the "Early Bird Special Over Easy." [Toast, bacon, hash browns and two eggs prepared "over easy."] The wait staff came to know me and swung by to fill my coffee cup more than to take my order. They knew it by heart.
I scheduled a day off for myself after I looked up from my Miami Herald one morning and, in a fatigue induced fog, asked for the "Easy Bird Special Over Early." It took me a while to understand why Ofelia was grinning, chuckling and patting me on the back consolingly.
