Muffet interview:

Unhappy with ND offense, too quick with the shots. Need to take their time.

Asked how to stop Cunane, "We need to make her make a layup. At least make her work for her points.

Yeah Cunane hasn't had to do much from the time she makes the catch to the time she shoots. Have to be more physical to keep her away from he "spot" which is right side low.
Those are easy shots she's getting.

Oregon played most of the game without Hebard who injured her knee in the first half and sat out the rest of the game.

Ogunbowale, No. 5 Notre Dame beats No. 9 NC State 95-72
Associated Press 9:27 CT

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Once Notre Dame gets loose in transition, it's hard for anybody to slow the fifth-ranked and reigning national champion Fighting Irish. Ninth-ranked North Carolina State never figured out a way, either.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 22 points and Notre Dame took over with 12 unanswered points in a dominating third quarter to beat N.C. State 95-72 on Monday night.

"I thought the second half was about as well as we've played all year," Irish coach Muffet McGraw said. "I thought we put 20 really good minutes together defensively. We got some steals, we rebounded, we got the break going. And I think when we can get going in transition, we can score."

The Irish (24-3, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) certainly proved it, too.

Leading just 41-36 at halftime, Notre Dame soon got rolling at a fast-paced clip to build a lead that steadily grew into a lopsided margin.

When the quarter was over, Notre Dame had scored 34 points -- an unsustainable 136-point pace -- and made 14 of 21 shots (.667). That included 15 fast-break points, the last coming when Marina Mabrey found Jackie Young for a transition layup to beat the horn and give Notre Dame a 75-59 lead entering the final quarter.

Freshman Elissa Cunane scored a season-high 28 points for the Wolfpack (22-3, 9-3), who shot just 39 percent after halftime.

N.C. State coach Wes Moore said the team normally sends one or two guards back to defend against transition chances, but tried sending all three back this time. It didn't work, and compounded matters by helping the Irish dominate the boards against a Wolfpack team that had been outrebounded only twice all year.

"It just came in waves," Moore said. "That's what a great team does. You play even with them for a while, then all of a sudden they go on a 12-zip run. Then you play even with them for a while, and they have another 14-to-2 run or whatever -- and now the ballgame's out of your hands."

BIG PICTURE
Notre Dame: The reigning national champions responded with veteran precision to most anything the Wolfpack tried to do. Notre Dame dominated the glass (45-28) to finish with 18 second-chance points, scored 24 points off turnovers and had 37 fast-break points.

"I think the third quarter was just our defense," said Jessica Shepard, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. "We know anytime we get stops on defense, that means we can get out and run."

N.C. State: N.C. State had upset of the Irish in its Reynolds Coliseum home before, snapping their 35-game winning streak against ACC opponents in December 2016. But after tying the game at 47 on Aislinn Konig's 3-pointer with 7:03 left in the third, N.C. State -- a shorthanded team hobbled by an improbable run of knee injuries -- just couldn't keep up as Notre Dame kicked into a dominating gear.

PLENTY OF PINK
This is always an emotionally significant event in Raleigh: the annual Play4Kay game named in honor of late Hall of Fame Wolfpack coach Kay Yow, who died in January 2009 after a long fight with cancer.

The team donned pink and white uniforms while Moore wore a pink blazer, the color of breast cancer awareness. On the other sideline, McGraw wore pink heels that featured Yow's name and one of her sayings about letting life's challenges "kick you forward."

Versions of the game take place across the country to raise money and awareness for fighting women's cancers. At N.C. State, it includes cancer survivors coming onto the court at halftime -- grouped by the number of years they've been survived the fight -- to celebrate and be honored.

With Monday's loss, the Wolfpack fell to 2-4 under Moore in Play4Kay games.

"We often refer to Coach Yow and some of her quotes and just what a special person she was," said Moore, who spent two seasons as an assistant coach under Yow. "I think it always a little extra here, but I wish we could back it up by winning a game or two on the occasion as well."

UP NEXT

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish host Duke on Thursday.

N.C. State: Wake Forest visits the Wolfpack on Thursday.

Game Recap: Women's Basketball | 2/18/2019 9:33:00 PM

#5 Irish Speed Past #9 N.C. State, 95-72
Notre Dame records season high 37 fastbreak points

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 5 Notre Dame women's basketball team earned its third top-10 win and nation leading seventh ranked victory on Monday evening, defeating No. 9 N.C. State, 95-72. The Fighting Irish (24-3, 11-2) outscored the Wolfpack (22-3, 9-3), 54-36, in the second half and recorded a season-high 37 fastbreak points.

Jessica Shepard and Jackie Young each notched double-doubles. Shepard tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds while Young procured 16 points and 12 boards. Arike Ogunbowale flirted with a triple-double with 22 points, eight boards and eight assists.

Marina Mabrey earned her seventh game over 20 points with 21 tonight. Lastly, Brianna Turner made it five-for-five in starters in double figures with 12.

"We played together defensively, we rebounded, we got the break going, and I think when we get going in transition, we can score," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "It was the team effort on defense that I was really impressed with."

How It Happened
The Irish built an early 12-6 lead at 5:42 in the first behind their two post players in Shepard and Turner, who combined for nine of the points. A minute later, the Irish were up just 12-10 when Ogunbowale heated up, scoring nine of the team's final 11 points of the quarter to give Notre Dame a slight 23-21 advantage at the end of the period.

N.C. State scored the first basket of the second, knotting the game at 23-all. The Irish responded by recording an 11-2 scoring stretch which spanned from 7:02-4:51, claiming their largest lead of the half at 34-25. However, the Wolfpack didn't go away, cutting the deficit at the half to 41-36. Ogunbowale and Mabrey each boasted double digits by the half with 11 and 10 points, respectively, followed by eight points each from Turner and Shepard.

The Wolfpack briefly caught fire from beyond the arc early in the third, connecting on three treys to tie the game at 47-all at 7:03. The Irish then silenced the capacity crowd with a 12-0 run in less than a two-minute span, powered by Mabrey, Young and Turner.

All five starters were in double figures by the end of the third, as the offense posted its best quarter of the game, outscoring N.C. State, 34-23, to take a 75-59 lead into the fourth.

Ogunbowale scored the first five points of the fourth, followed by layups from Young and Shepard as the 9-0 run prompted a Wolfpack timeout, extending the lead to 84-59 with 6:46 left. When the final buzzer sounded, the Irish had outrebounded the Wolfpack 25-11 in the second half and tallied the most points ever in the series against N.C. State with 95.

"We really focused on our defense in the second half," Young said. "It was important to get stops and get boards. Jess is a great outlet, so everytime she gets it, she gives us a heads start and we're able to get going in transition."

Notes
  • With the win, Notre Dame moves to 7-1 all-time in the series vs. N.C. State, with a 3-1 mark in Reynolds Coliseum.
  • Irish also move to 87-5 all-time in ACC play.
  • The win also marks Notre Dame's seventh ranked victory on the year, which leads all Division I teams. Also marked Notre Dame's third top-10 win.
  • Chasing the all-time scoring record → Arike Ogunbowale tallied 22 points tonight and ups her career total to 2,346. Skylar Diggins holds the record with 2,357 points.

ND had a 37-2 advantage in fast break points, yikes. makes it hard for teams to beat you when you have a scoring advantage like that.

I didn't watch the first half but in the second half, everytime there was a steal or a defensive rebound Young, Arike and Marina all immediately started pushing it. That was pretty much all we did most of the night. I love it. We are fast enough and conditioned enough to do it every night.

Coaches Poll Week 16, ND #4

Coaches Poll Week 16, ND #4

I thought ND would jump UL with their loss coupled with ND's big win over #9 NCS. One place higher on just one vote would have done it. This week ND has Duke while the Cardinals face UVA.

ND is 17 votes behind #3 Oregon. Still no word on Hebard's injury.

At the time of this article (Tuesday evening), her status is unknown heading into a weekend of home games with UCLA and USC coming to Matthew Knight Arena.

Game 28 Preview: Duke
#5 Irish Look to Keep Rolling with Three Games Left

Game 28: #5/5 Notre Dame (24-3, 11-2) vs. Duke (11-13, 3-9)
When: Thursday, Feb. 21 | 7 pm ET
Where: Notre Dame, Ind. | Purcell Pavilion (9,149)
Watch: ACCN Extra

Listen: Pulse FM 96.9/92.1/103.1 | Bob Nagle (PxP) | Listen Online
Live Scoring: Statbroadcast
Notes: Notre Dame | Duke

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - With a three-way tie atop the ACC standings, all three of Notre Dame women's basketball's final three games weigh significant importance. Up next on the docket, the No. 5 ranked Fighting Irish will host Duke in a Thursday night affair on Feb. 21. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion, streaming live on ACCN Extra.

CHASING SKYLAR
Senior guard Arike Ogunbowale is within striking distance of the Notre Dame scoring record. Ogunbowale enters Thursday's game with 2,346 career points - just 11 points back from Skylar Diggins (2,357). Back on Dec. 16, Ogunbowale surpassed the 2,000 career point milestone, becoming the fifth player to do so, joining Irish greats, Ruth Riley, Katryna Gaither, Beth Morgan and of course Skylar Diggins.

IRISH SHARPSHOOTERS
Two Irish players rank in the top 15 in the nation in shooting percentage, shooting over 60 percent each. In addition, four Irish players rank in the top 50, shooting over 50 percent each.

10. Shepard - 60.9 percent
14. Turner - 60.5 percent
31. Young - 55.6 percent
46. Mabrey - 52.6 percent

Shepard and Turner are the only post duo in the country both shooting over 60 percent. The two towers rank 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the ACC in field goal percentage.

In addition, Young continues to be the most efficient guard in Notre Dame's arsenal. Her .556 shooting percentage ranks 4th nationally among just guards.

As a team, the Irish are shooting 51.6 percent, which ranks third in the country. That number is on pace to finish 2nd all-time in Notre Dame history. The 1987-88 team holds the top spot at 53.2 percent.

TOP ACC RANKING FOR EACH STARTER
Continuing with the theme that each Irish starter can step up on any given day and deserves All-Conference or All-America honors is the fact that each starter ranks first in the ACC in one statistical category:

Mabrey --> 1st in three-point FG% (.472)
Turner --> 1st in blocks (2.7)
Ogunbowale --> 1st in scoring (21.1)
Shepard --> 1st in FG% (.609)
Young --> 1st in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3)

BEST IRISH PLAYER IN ACC PLAY ONLY?
Only two players in all of the ACC came claim they rank in the top 10 in six different statistical categories in league play only. The answer: Notre Dame's Marina Mabrey and Duke's Haley Gorecki.

Mabrey ranks 10th in Scoring (15.7), 7th in FG% (.545), 7th in Assists (4.2), 3rd in 3PT FG% (.519), 2nd in 3PT FG (3.1) and 7th in A/TO Ratio (1.7).

YOUNG & SHEPARD CONNECTION
Shepard leads the Irish with 10 double-doubles on the year while Young and Turner follow behind with six double-doubles each. Interesting to note though, that five of the games in which Young recorded a double-double, Shepard recorded one as well. In addition, both have recorded a double-double in the last two games.

WHO'S HOT
Jessica Shepard has achieved 11 straight games in doubles figures, as the senior recorded a season best of 12 to start the year. Shepard has also earned three double-doubles in the last four games -- in the said four game span, Shepard has averaged 19.3 points and 12.5 points.

Furthermore, over the last two games, Shepard has hit 72.2 percent of her shots, knocking down 13-of-18.

Meanwhile, Young has totaled eight straight games in double figures. The junior previously set a career high of nine straight games with double digit points at the start of the year before it came to an end vs WKU on Dec. 19.

TURNER BLOCK PARTY
With 20 blocks over the last five games, Turner is averaging 4.0 blocks in the month of February. Only Alexes Bryant of Texas A&M CC and Channon Fluker of CSUN have a better total and average this month.

Turner has collected 37 blocks over the last 10 games, including her season high of five four times. It's a major reason why Turner was recently named a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Semifinalist.

NO. 3 ON FIRE FROM THREE
Over last seven games: Mabrey has converted 24-of-43 (.558) from beyond the arc - In that span, only four players in the country have made over 20 treys and have a higher shooting percentage.

As a result, Mabrey has raised her season three-point shooting percentage from .425 to .472, as that number now leads the ACC and ranks 4th in the country. Mabrey has also raised her three-point field goals made per game from 2.3 to 2.6, which ranks 5th in the ACC.

Last but certainly not least, Mabrey is up to 252 career treys, which ranks second all-time and sits just 10 threes behind the record holder, Alicia Ratay (262).
