Don't Panic?

Are you serious?

Can you imagine if there is a PAC-16 and Big-16?

ND would have a hard time scheduling any power schools, considering conferences teams will only have like 2 non-conference games, and those schools would like schedule easy opponents to guarantee a win.

So Alaskandomer,

How do you propose the idea that staying independent is beneficial to the future success of Notre Dame football?

First- 2 non-conf games is very unlikely. 3-4 is more like it. Scheduling should be no more difficult than at present.
Second- Any scenario for ND conf membership makes it virtually impossible to both have 7 home games, and continue to play non-conf rivals.
Third- Having all ND home games televised is very unlikely.

The arguement in favor of joining the Big Whatever seems to be "Everybody else is doing it." ND should not allow itself to be stampeded. What we stand to lose by joining is far to great.

I would spear them 1 by 1 if I could. You eat that Big 10 cake again, and I'm gonna get you a slice of Terry's special pain cake! Wooooooo

Wanting to join the Big 10 is like wanting to sign up for a Sarah Palin lecture series. What? No .gif's of a guy shooting himself in the head?

Several reports breaking that Texas and Texas A&M to the Big 10, Oklahoma asking to go to the SEC.

Looks like an interesting few weeks ahead of us!

Just my personal opinion, but I think ND needs to jump on the Big 10 offer. Otherwise they could be left with a cobbled together conference made up of the unwanted dregs of the BE and ACC. As an independent they'll be frozen out of the NC hunt by the superconferences.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. If ND can't win now, how in the hell are they going to win with the Superconferences. We won't have much of a choice but to join the Big Ten.
Join or Die...

I hate this whole situation. It's all the friggin Big Ten's fault. Granted the ACC rocked the boat and made people a little uncomfortable 7 years ago when they raided the Big East, but all this superconference crap is the Big Ten's doing. Delany tipped his hand and the Pac10 acted on it and if the Pac10 ends up with Texas, OU and A&M, they'll probably come out over the Big Ten.
But if the B10 can get ND in addition to Nebraska, that would be nice haul. Certainly better than Rutgers or UConn, which they might have to settle for.

Its just like the Big10.. Start fast, then fade quickly. Just like every BCS game. Heh.

Texas is Pac10 or SEC bound, I doubt they are headed to the Big10.

These stupid ass posts are driving me nuts. We're not going to get left out in the cold if we don't commit right away. Let this crap develop and stop trying to make this a life or death decision. It's stupid. Whether we commit now or we ask to join a few seasons from now, the conferences will be willing to extend an offer because we would bring in a considerable amount of money.

Say what you want, but the fact is that if the BigEast decides to buck up and say "join or go away" to try and save itself and the we refuse the Big10 now there is no going back. Say that scenario plays out. The BigEast implodes, the Big10 freezes ND out, and now the 4 super conferences tell the NCAA to take a hike. Guess where ND lands?

We will disagree until the end. Fact of the matter is money is money, and Notre Dame brings a ton with it. We can have this debate for weeks if you want, but I guarantee if Notre Dame submitted a formal request to a conference, we would not be turned down.

If the Big East does that (which would not be prudent), ND would definitely leave. But until that "seismic shift" happens, we're staying cool.

Yikes....We agree again Phork. lol

This has been my contention all along. We can wait for a bit, but let's not get caught sitting on the crapper. ND, if not careful on this deal could become the "real" Harvard of the Midwest....great academics and irrelevent athletics. Would that make the "stay independent at all cost" folks happy then? Times are a-changin' folks.... Dollars drive the game, not tradition. If tradition truly ruled, we'd land any 5* recruit we wanted.

I can agree that ND still has time, and that they should not jump the shark on this situation. But let's not act like no conference out there could live without ND. The problem, as I see it, is that Texas has already said that they will go nowhere, unless A&M and Texas Tech are invited along with the Longhorns. The combined revenue generation of Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech, would certainly trump the value that ND could bring to a conference. If the leaders at ND know that they are about to get left out of a "4 Superconference" scenario, then I would be shocked if they didn't act to avoid that.

Good luck scheduling anything but football as an independent. Don't forget the recent purchase of NBC by Comcast. The possibility of being relegated to Vs. And trust me, 6-6 seasons will get you there.

I'm not saying that ND will never join a conference. I'm merely saying that as of now, there has not been a large enough move by the big players (Texas, Oklahoma, Big East teams) to make ND run to a conference. If and when those schools start aligning themselves, then ND will need to make a move, but until then, calm down.

No one will calm down in this mess. Our hand is being forced slowly, but not yet. Let's hope we have some time before the shit hits the fan. All of these teams joining other conferences and eliminating one conference can still help us stay independent.

As of right now, we still have auto-bids in a money laundering BCS system. Guess who's gonna draw a big crowd?

Like the solubility of normally insoluble products, that is conferences. But if the Big XII goes away, then what has changed? So the Pac-10 gets TWO auto bids? What about the Big XII's auto bid?

Holy algebra batman, it adds up the SAME.

The most wanted theme by any notre dame fan is to stay independent, but if it comes down to joining a conference, may we never join the big10. The big ten has a screw ND attitude, and ND should reciprocate it back at them.

Joining the big east makes the most sense. We would make that conference legit, even though it truly is already (Sagarin ranked the Big East #2 last season.... Big10 was ranked 6th.)

We save the Big East from getting thrown under the bus, we are truly the big fish in a little pond, and can continue to have MOST of our traditional rivalry games without playing a killer schedule to do it. Hell i have said before Notre Dame has too many rivalries. Keep USC, BC, Navy. Screw UM and Purdue... the big ten refs ripped us so bad last year they dont deserve the right to play us.

We are regionalized if we join the big10, but can stay more nationalized if we join the big east. This will help recruiting very much so by continuing to make us players in California, NJ, Florida, and Big12 country (Big12 is splitting across the country, so location isnt going to play as huge of a role in family seeing games as before.)

The ACC tried expansion years ago, and look where it got them. ND has the opportunity to be the biggest leader in this changing landscape. May we be the ones who truly save the Big East and college football for that matter. The Big East will remain BCS legit, and we will remain a national program.
