I leave for games at 7 in the morning, and I left at 4 for the USC game last year. You'll live.

I drove cross country 2x last year from California to South Bend on no sleep last year to watch home games. I know I will live, but I appreciate your staunch support. Thanks.

In all seriousness though, I don't know if we can hold off being a part of a conference anymore. Sad in my opinion.

NOTRE DAME,

Please join the Big 10 before its too late.

Nebraska is the initial domino that will create the "Super-conference" Era. The Pac-10 will get Texas mark my word.

Jack Swarbrick agree to join the Big 10.

Join the Big 10, the Pac-10 is going to get crazy and ND might not even be able to USC with the new schedule, who knows.

JUST JOIN THE BIG 10!!

Don't Panic?

Are you serious?

Can you imagine if there is a PAC-16 and Big-16?

ND would have a hard time scheduling any power schools, considering conferences teams will only have like 2 non-conference games, and those schools would like schedule easy opponents to guarantee a win.

So Alaskandomer,

How do you propose the idea that staying independent is beneficial to the future success of Notre Dame football?

I don't buy the recruiting argument. ND has always recruited nationally as long as I can remember. When I started watching ND football Ara was coach. I do not recall an NBC Contract when he was coach. I don't agree with the competing for a NC either, in fact, since I have watched ND football we have only had one NC since having the NBC contract.
As far as scheduling goes, USC is in the PAC 10. They are not Independent yet they schedule us. Being in a conference will not stop us from scheduling USC. I mean, c'mon do you really think they schedule us because we're Independent or because we are ND, arguably the most storied rivalry in college football.

None of this new conference stuff will start until at least 2012.

Notre Dame and Swarbrick will most likely hold off and not panic.

I think the scenario will play out like this:

The Big Ten will stay at 12 or possibly go to 14. If they do this, we will wait and see what happens. Our schedules in 2012 and 2013 are plenty competitive so there shouldn't be any problems.

But, if the Big Ten adds more than 14 teams, and grabs a 15th team sometime here in the near future, we may want to finally join.

Still, I think we're going to ride out our independence until 2013 and see if we can pull it off. Even if the Big Ten adds 5 teams rather quickly here, we may be able to jump to the ACC. That would be a nice move, unless the SEC steals FSU, Miami and Virginia Tech.

We're still in wait and see mode though.

I've been told that if FSU were to be offered to move to the SEC, they would take it.

ESPN report:
PAC 10 ready to invite 6. This is bad news for ND.
Source: Pac-10 Conference poised to invite 6 Big 12 Conference teams - ESPN

Bad news indeed.

Sooner or later there will be a PAC-16 and possibly a Big-16.

Meaning no Big East or Big 12...

If Notre Dame doesn't jump ship and get on board with the Big-16 they are screwing themselves big time.

These NCAA changes will alter are rivalries no matter what, so by joining the Big-16 we'll at least have the opportunity to hold on to our geographical rivals.

They definitely being forced.

If they get left behind from the "Super Conference Era".. ND will be shooting itself in the foot.

The conferences are starting to form right now...

Hopefully by the end of the month ND is a Big-10 member.

I think it's inevitable that Notre Dame joins the Big Ten. Change is a hard thing to accept, but it's time to embrace it and move onward to victory. Go Irish!

if we have to join a conferance please let it be any other conferance than the big ten! if we join the big ten i fear that it will be divided into two divisions like the big 12 is currently...one that will be extremely tuff(which naturaly we will be stuck in) and one that will suck! plus i think it would benefit our recruiting to play in a conferance that isnt geographicaly the same!

Why wouldn't you want to be in a tough conference?

I rather see ND slowly rise to an elite team in a tough conference, then see them beat up on football teams like IU and Illinois.

I would want to play schools like Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, and now Nebraska.

If they divide it into two divisions, it won't be too different. Iowa and Nebraska in the western division would both be pretty good. Sure we would be in with Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, but you've got to beat the best to be the best.

i never said i dont want ND in a tuff conferance, i want them to be in a balanced situation. obviously no one here knows what the true makeup of the super big ten will be but one theory i have read is a split into a east and west divisions. then, on top of that others have said that the new conferance wont split michigan and osu up. in the end if the big ten is the only option i dont want to see ND have to run the gauntlett(michigan, osu, psu, nebraska, whisky, etc) every year while iowa or somebody else plays the shit programs in the big ten(illinois, minnesota, NW, missou). kind of like the big 12 is set up now. i dont know, maybe i am being paranoid, but we will be joining an organization of pre existing aliances who's agenda may not realy mesh with ours and that concerns me. because in the end we are going to be FORCED into this and that may give our enemies a sense of empowerment! to think, that after all these years of thumbing our nose at them, then they finaly construct a landscape to force our hand that we are going to accepted with open arms is crazy imo.

to those that think that Delaney and the other "big 4" commish's are above these types of back room dealings just know that the reason that we dont have a playoff system today is because this was their plan all along! just a year ago delaney told the big 12 commish that they wouldnt pursue their members and here we are on the verge of the big 12 evaporating! he is a lier and Swarbrick needs to be very carefull with this scumbag!
