Don't Blink

Don't blink Jack. Our answer to the Big 10 must continue to be an emphatic NO!

These are 5 star recruits. Look on the ND roster-how many 4 or 5 star players are from around Indiana? ND has to be able to recruit nationally because of their high academic standards. If they can only recruit regionally, like many of the big 10 teams, they will be Northwestern in a few years.

i agree bro

I gotta say, joining a conference may make you play a limited geographic schedule, but the bigger impact is the NBC contract. That gets ND national exposure each weekend in a way that a Big # (10, 12, etc) TV contract may not.

Any ideas as to what would happen with the TV deal? I'm not sure which cable carriers have the college packages - are those all Direct TV or something like that?

ND would be hurt by the physical geographic schedule, but the TV deal could be bigger. Would be great if ND could preserve the NBC contract in some way....

is this a joke or sarcasm?

what HS players from the south, texas region, or west coast are even considering these teams at this point in recruiting?

penn state has a total of 1 commitment from a 2* scrub.

7 of Michigan's 27 recruits are from south of the Mason-Dixon line, and 3 of those 7 are 4* guys. So don't say "It can't be done". It might be harder to do, but it is still doable. And isn't that attitude a HUGE part of the ND mystique and tradition?

I'm tired of us being independent. Its LITERALLY stupid. Someone give me a good reason why we are independent in football but big east in all of our other sports. Its fucking stupid. I'm tired of our "were better than a conference mentality". We need to join a conference wether it be the big 10 or somewhere else. MAN THE FUCK UP NOTRE DAME and join already.

The recruiting argument doesn't necessarily hold true. We would still be able to play out of conference games. We would still play USC and possibly Stanford. So there are trips to CA where recruits would see us play. If Texas joins the conference, we would probably play them at least every other year if not in same division of the conference. That would help our recruiting in Texas. There would still be at least one or two more out of conference games a year. Plus, with a sixteen team league look how much geographical territory the conference would possibly cover. As far West as Nebraska/Missouri/Texas. As far North as Michigan/Minnesota/Wisconsin. As far East as Penn St/New York (if Rutgers or Syracuse join). And then South nothing really changes except for Texas possibly. That is a very large area, and then throw in a game in CA every year against either USC or Stanford.

Not saying I am for or against the move to join a conference. I will wait to see who goes and who doesn't and what affects it has before I rush to judgement. I just wanted to give my opinion on the recruiting side.

I agree, you can still keep games with SC and Navy, and probably the upcoming game with the U why not join and have a schedule with some real teams on it (not Tulsa, Western Mich ect.). Plus a conference championship would probably land them in the National Championship, which would be almost impossible to do as independent.

And what about our National TV contract. How is ND going to be on TV every week across the Nation like they are today. Recruits know ND because they see them on TV every week also. In the Big whatever conference, they will be on nation TV twice a year if they are lucky.

OSU always gets some florida players on their team, and have started getting more in Texas too.

Recruit #1: "Yeah, I'm down to USC and Notre Dame. I'm not sure who I'm going to go with. I see Notre Dame football a lot more than USC..."
Recruit's Dad turns on NBC
Recruit #1: "And now I'm seeing them lose to UConn. My decision is made."

Winning gets recruits to know the team.

Yes, and winning on national TV every week will get the recruit to know them a lot better. As it is now, many times when a recruit is down to a couple of teams it is the local team and ND. Say, if they are from Southern Cal-it is between USC, UCLA, and ND. If ND is not on TV every week it would be Notre who?

Literally the worst argument for joining a conference ever. We're independent in football and not other sports because it is possible in football to be an independent and win the championship and much more difficult in other sports. Conference tournaments are very important in other sports and don't exist in football unless you count the conference championship games. For many other sports with post-season tournaments, winning the conference tournament guarantees you a spot in the postseason, something that does not come into play in football. Also, the football season is short enough, and ND has enough rivals and tradition where they can get teams to schedule them during their conference play. ND will never have a problem scheduling a tough schedule in football (even for all the bitching about this years, Phil Steele has NDs schedule this year rated as the 17th toughest Phil Steele), and the same can not be said for other sports. Especially in sports that lose money (think just about everything but football and basketball) it is nice to be in a conference with teams that are fairly nearby as to cut down on travel expenses. Joining a conference also hurts our schedule. Sure, we'll keep USC and Navy on, but we would have to keep Stanford on as well if we want to ensure that we are on the West Coast every year. With 8 conference games (maybe there will be more in a super-conference?) our schedule would be very limited. If teams such as USC, Navy, and Stanford would stay along with the 8 conference games, we would only have one slot left obviously. People love seeing games scheduled against Oklahoma and Miami, but those games would never happen if we were to join a conference. Why play a tough 8 game conference schedule and have an out of conference schedule with multiple top 10 teams? I don't think its a were better mentality, but I think it is more of a we don't want to play all our games in the midwest mentality. ND wants to stay national, and joining a conference would really ruin that. If there is the potential for four super conferences where ND would have trouble getting teams to want to play out of conference then joining a conference is a smart idea, but only then.

bottome line is the only reason we are even having this discussion is because we have been losing. if we can survive this summer without any changes to the conferance landscape and have a 9 or 10 win season i think we will be in a strong enough position to weather the storm. if nebraska has some integrity and doesnt leave the big 12 that should slow things up to give us some more time to be relavent to the bcs again! once that happens the status quo will be all good imo!

If we keep our rivalries as best we can and join a 16-team Big Ten, we'll have the hardest schedule in the country every single year. Literally, we'd never be outside the top 5.

Not that I don't want to play big games, but it would be kind of ridiculous, and I think the ND Admin is thinking about this.

Due to the huge size of the 16-team conference a "down" year would look like this:

1. Tulsa
2. Navy
3. Michigan State
4. Purdue
5. Ohio State
6. Indiana
7. Penn State
8. Michigan
9. Illinois
10. Boston College
11. Iowa
12. USC

And some year's we'd play a holy-hell of a schedule:

1. Utah
2. Navy
3. Michigan State
4. Purdue
5. Ohio State
6. Michigan
7. Indiana
8. Penn State
9. Wisconsin
10. USC
11. Boston College
12. Northwestern

Would it be fair that we have to play USC, Navy and BC every year when Iowa and Wisconsin play one mediocre BCS school out of conference each year? Not to mention we'd have the same schedule almost every year...very boring.

good point! basicly in order to maintain our presence on the west coast or nationaly we would have to play a monster schedule while Pen St is playing toledo and the rest of the mac! thats great!!! {sarcasim}

Probably doesn't matter much now. The Big 10 has extended an offer to Nebraska to join them, which can only be due to Notre Dame telling them their not interested.

Independence is our SALVATION!

Independence is our SALVATION!

Gentlemen,
Hoping that I don't sound redundant, but there is no doubt that ND does not want to be caught up in the politics of a conference like the INTEGER. The best interest of our athletic programs, our academics and the way the University makes policy will change drastically, and for the worse if we join the INTEGER.
Seriously, once you join the INTEGER, how do you differentiate your school. Yes, winning cures many ills, however ND has different academic standards than any school in the INTEGER or almost any other conference for that matter. So, why would any recruit in his right mind choose ND and it's tough entrance standards and rigorous year-round standards, instead of choosing any other school in the country let alone in the conference?
This is insanity! I can tell you, that if ND joins the INTEGER or any other conference in the near future, they will eventually become truly irrelivant!
A small Catholic University, with very tough academic standards in a cold weather environment with nothing to offer but a great liberal arts education, VS. every other school in the country, not to mention the conference, where entrance standards are easy, academic load is light, and the TV deal is the same?
It won't happen overnight, but within a decade, ND will become Yale, Harvard, or worse, Indiana!
This will ruin what ND is. End of story!

I have a question, will we still be on National Television every week if we join the Big10 or are we going to be on the Big10 network?

I'm also curious will we be on TV at 10am like Ohio State because in my opinion I don't want to get up before Noon on Saturday's in the fall.

Ditto.

Yes we'd probably be on the Big 10 Network. Adding ND would be a nice marketing ploy for expanding the Big 10 Network
