Couple people have asked how my weekend went, so here goes (this has nothing to do with the actual game):
* This was my 4th game, and about 20th time to SB, but it was my close friend's first game (he was in SB for my wedding though). It never ceases to amaze me how global ND is. And it blew my buddy away as well. From the airport to the city to the stadium, you see SO MANY people from across the country, and truly, across the world. At one point, we were at Legends on Friday and we were at a large table, and we were drinking with a couple from Boston, another couple from Charlotte, another couple from Michigan, a couple of dudes from Seattle, and of course we were from SoCal. Insane.
* Tailgated with people from ISD. Got to meet and talk to CoachD, who I had talked to on the ohone but it was good to meet him in person. Guy is just a fountain of football knowledge. I could have talked to him for 5 hours no problem. Also, randomly, 2 of the guys were from SoCal knew several people who were friends with my buddy. Again, insane.
* Tuitt is going to be a beast for us. CoachD told us a story that he mentioned on ISD but got into a little more detail with us. He said in practice Tuitt went against Prestwood, who CoachD said is really well put together, and on one play he literally lifted Prestwood off both feet and pushed him back into the backfield. That woke Prestwood up and he went hard with Tuitt on the next play. And Tuitt did the same thing again! He said Tuitt's strength is crazy.
* Worst pep rally of all-time. I wrote this in the pep rally thread but it must be re-said. When the South Bend Tribune even bags on you, then you know you sucked Dillon Hall. What a travesty. Left after 25 minutes of bad skits in the sweltering heat. Couldn't handle it anymore.
* Trumpets under the Dome was cool and is something everyone should do once. Recorded it on my ipod and will play it nonstop to my USC-fan students LOL.
* That was my first time I was ever in a true thunderstorm. HOLY CRAP. My wife always says how she misses those thunderstorms so she was jealous, but that wasn't my idea of fun. That lightning was no joke, and there was one crack of thunder/lightning that was the loudest thing I've ever heard. We both literally jumped when we heard it. My wife said they showed that particular one on TV during the delay, as it almost hit the stadium or something.
* We stayed after the first delay and the crowd was hyped when we returned. I swear, if Ruffin hits that fg we win the game. No doubt in my mind. Instead, we were down by 2 scores with a deflated team. Damn. After the 2nd delay, we went to the concourse to wait, but everyone was sprinting to the exits, so we said screw it, these people know more about storms than we do, so we better bounce too. My father-in-law picked us up in the pouring rain and we watched the rest of the game from home.
* Too pissed to party after the game. So no Backer or Corby's for my buddy, who was pissed/beat also. Oh well, we hit it hard Friday and Saturday before the game.
* If you don't have a tailgate, you can find one. Midwesterners are the nicest people in the world. It is such a culture shock from many of the people out here and on the east coast. Love those people.
* On the way home, I sat next to a young couple that graduated from Arizona State. Turns out the guy played basketball on scholly at ASU, and the girl was a high school volleyball coach (you know those stories about how hot ASU women are? Well, my mother-in-law reads this site. But use your imagination when picturing her and you won't be far off. Not even funny.)
Anyway, I won't say who his name but he played right before James Harden played for ASU. We started talking about academics, and he said it's absolutely true that coaches discourage athletes from taking too many classes and from taking any hard classes. He said a lot of his teammates and other guys he knows who played D1 either finished their eligibility or left school early with basically nothing to show for academically speaking, and none of them come back to school to finish their degrees. According to him, a lot of the guys will have like 60 credits, but they're so many random credits that most of it won't count towards a degree. And his gf was saying that most of the athlete are in a major called "Family Studies" LOL. Just goes to show what we're up against at ND.
* Another crazy story he told me was about Lute Olson and why he resigned at AZ. I had always heard rumors, but I never got the real story. This dude didn't even really want to tell me but I wore him down. But out of respect for him, I won't tell you nosy a**holes either LOL. But if I ever have a beer with you...it's a great/juicy story!
Anyone else who went to the game, let's here it...
