Well it looks like the Charlie Weis era might have come to an end aginst the team it started against. As much as people on here hate him, and want him fired, i have to say i am still a very big fan of his. He without a doubt will leave the program in a much better situation than he got it. The roster is loaded with talent, and he did it without sacrificing grades, or what the University stands for. Weis embraced the past by bringing back some of the legends as well as the neutral site games and 7-4-1 schedule which works great in our favor. I have no doubt that Weis will find success down the road. His experiences here will only make him a better coach.

As for the fire Weis crowd. I hope you realize that unless there is a plan and a successor in place, firing Weis will ruin all that he has dome in his tenure. The administration needs to look at who is a real option and get them on board before letting Weis go. If that does not happen then Weis should come back for another year. I know Brian Kelly and Urban Meyer are the hot names but i hate the spread option. Meyer runs a dirty program and is a dirty recruiter. Kelly is like hiring Weis all over again because Cincinnatti and Notre Dame are 2 different jobs. I would like to see the school seriously consider Harbaugh. The guy can coach is an aggressive recruiter and understands academic standards.

Hopefully we can keep Ianello and Polian on the staff.

One last time for the big guy

I'm still a big Weis fan too. Part of me still thinks he can be successful at ND and that firing him would be a poor choice, but its tough for me to defend that right now after the last two games. The fact is, we were a 3-9 team in 2007 and teams don't go from 3-9 to the BCS in two years.

I've posted this many times in different threads, but there are 4 steps to rebuilding:

1) Losing by a lot
2) Losing close games
3) Winning close games
4) Winning by a lot

In 2007, we were clearly in Step 1. In 2008, we were in Step 2. We're 4-4 in close games this year, so we are somewhere between Steps 2 and 3. I really think that Weis is still adapting and learning to be a Head Coach and that if given another year or two, we would be a team that is built to be in the BCS every year. That being said, I would not be surprised or angry if Weis is let go at the end of the year. There are both positives and negatives to keeping Weis for another year, and with the last two losses, everyone is focusing on the negatives. After the Navy loss, the consensus was that with 9 wins Weis safe, with 8 his job status would be questionable, and with 7 or 6 he would most definitely be fired. I still think with a 2-0 finish that Weis will be kept for one more year. Regardless of our record right now, we have been in a position to win every game this year, and that fact will not be lost on Swarbrick.

On a different note, if Gruden is our #1 option then you would assume that would impact whether or not Weis would be fired, because he will receive a lot of interest from NFL teams this off-season. If Kelly is our #1 choice, it would not surprise me in the least to see Swarbrick hold off on firing Weis for the reason that there is really nowhere for Kelly to go (no good job openings in college for next year).

I agree guys... Firing Weis will hurt the program, we will get our rear ends handed to us another season or two. Great prospects will leave among the turmoil, along with new recruits anyone who doesnt believe that should go drink some more cool aid to make themselves feel better. I think CW should stay. This thing is already a media circus, its embarressing. 16 years 3 coaches. I'm not a proud Irish fan at the moment. For those who belive all this headcoach BS hasn't waved its ugly head watch the highlites on ESPN. It's sad......very sad....Hope all the Arm chair coaches are ready for the fresh meat for another feeding frenzy and if your not going to fire Weis have the STONES to get on TV and say...CW isn't going anywhere !!
Sorry if I offended anyone. This was not my intent. I have tried to make positive points in the forums but find it hard today.

Charlie has not lost this team. And no matter what is said, that should send a strong message to everyone concerned. The Irish play for him and do not quit. To a man I have no doubt they will tell you that he is THEIR COACH.

Is that worth another season? I think so. With the 2010 schedule and the currently 6th ranked offensive yardage producing squad in the nation, and a couple of top canidates for the 2010 Heisman Trophy, if they tank in 2010, CW deserves to be let go.

Unless you want to sign up for the flavor of the month in coaches to take over this program, as there is NO LONG BALL HITTING coaches out there regardless of what their CURRENT season shows, and start the process over at the risk of another "give him five years, then judge" scenario, then it may be time to sit tight.

Tonight the 30th plus ranked team in the country took the 12th ranked team in the nation to the wire. And if it were not for a BS call in the fourth they may have won. Why, because the players have not given up on their coach or each other. And that has everything to do with CW.

"The Irish play for him and do not quit."

sorry, but that is laughable. coming out flat two straight games after staring at a very possible BCS bid (before the Navy game) is not playing for him. there are better coaches available who they will play for in who will also have the ability to put an offensive AND defensive game plan in place to expose the weaknesses of the opponent.....this is key. weis has failed here. D coordinator hires fall on the head coach, as does directing the defensive game strategy from week to week.

too many of you feel it will be an embarrassment to have to hire another coach. im sure ND is already in the process of feeling out what type of hire can be made. Weis has plenty of talent. he is not good head coaching material. it is true for guys with far more experience than him. more experience wont help. if clausen and tate leave, weis will be exposed next year. Pitt, USC, and Stanford on next years schedule will simply be better than ND. Weis will find a way to lose to 1 or 2 teams in addition to those three that he shouldnt. 8-4 next year. there are too many guys that have already proven they can coach college football who would have never, with the current irish roster, lost to the likes of a severely outmanned Navy and a horrifically awful Michigan team this year.

recruits will be happy to come to ND and play for a coach who has proven he can win and make an immediate impact at every coaching stop he has made, such as brian kelly. i am confident he would take ND, even without clausen and tate, to a 9-3 season next year (a must with the laughable schedule they have).

football at ND is big business, like it or not. results have to matter. this was the year to take that step of winning the close games against good teams. they havent taken that step. additionally, they have lost to two teams this year that their talent level dictates they should have beaten handily. these baby steps dont cut it and when clausen, tate, and floyd are gone, then there will be more excuses for weis because then notre dame will be a "young" team.

guys, a proven head coach will have an immediate impact next year. you will see it in the way the teams come out in the first quarter, ready to play. you will see ND using its definite talent advantage (in most of next years games) to expose the weaknesses of teams on both sides of the ball. what happens under weis is that teams expose their weaknesses and the adjustments are too slow to be realized. 5 years IS PLENTY OF TIME TO PROVE YOU ARE NOT A GOOD HEAD COACH....and weis has capably proven it.

weis is the one who set the standard of needing 5 years to reach mediocrity. at marquee programs, quality coaches can win right away and can capably recruit right away. ND falls into that category. 5 years is not the standard...it is only the standard that has been set by poor hires.

i predict brian kelly will be hired soon after the end of this season and the impact next year will be crystal clear. he has made an immediate impact at every level of coaching....what he could do with the talent pool available to him at ND...i belive he is privately salivating at the thought.

The arm chair quarterbacks and coaches are pathetic. They are rempant on so many sites and in the media. They can't see past anything except wanting to FIRE CHARLIE. They can't see that the program is on an upswing and that firing CW, for no really tangible reason outside of some questionable losses, will drive the program back two or three steps while the "latest savoir" finds his way. The Head Coaching drama has become a circus and right when it seems to be headed the right direction (although not fast enough for the instant satifaction crowd) these so called experts want to pick up the next "new nickle" laying on the ground and make him the coach.

It amazes me how Charlie is able to convince these kids, who know nothing about the glory that was once ND Football unless they have read about it or seen RUDY, to come to school in South Bend. Two types of kids come to play for the Irish, the ones that come because they see something in playing for Charlie and they know he knows football and the NFL (has the rings to prove it) and the ones that come for a top education at Our Lady. CW needs to make adjustments as well on the coaching side as they evaluate the season. Are we really in need of a whole sale change, for the sake of change and I don't like Charlie? If he is gone, so are his players to include the ones coming in. Because one thing is for sure, you do not hear anything but positives when the players talk about their coach at Notre Dame.

.............outside of some questionable losses.

hilarious.

again, a proper new hire WILL NOT SET THE PROGRAM BACK 5 YEARS....AT MARQUEE SCHOOLS, NEW HIRES MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACTS....IT HAS HAPPENED PLENTY OVER THE LAST DECADE.

sorry, but the weis experience has caused many of you to buy into the whole "it will take another 5 years if we hire a new coach" myth...a quality coach will win. next year. that it has taken 5 years to get to a 7-5 record with a decidedly week schedule is not the norm...it is the norm under weis....an indictment on him.

you guys keep regurgitating the whole idea that ND will be set back 5 yrs w/ a new coach. looking at some marquee programs and new hires, the facts dont bare this out.

ND has made 3 bad hires.....making everyone believe the myth that it should take that long to make progress. not so, as long as the new hire is a proven, winning head coach.

Guys, let's be real here. I've been as big of a Weis supporter as any out there. From the day he was hired I was in his corner. I still love the guy, but 6-4 with this team is simply not good enough at Notre Dame. If he gets fired, it will not be an undeserved firing. It will be because his team didn't get the job done on the field, period. There's no race card, there's no hidden agenda. If his team had performed better this year, he would be retained. It didn't happen.

Yes, there will be risk in whoever we hire. There are very few home run hitters out there, and they all have jobs already. Kelly will be a risk (can he recruit at this level? can he recruit under academic restrictions? can he handle the pressure of coaching at ND? does he get ND? can he handle the opponents' best effort every single game, being the hunted instead of the gutty little hunter?), Gruden will be a risk (can he develop talent? can he handle dealing with college athletes? can he develop a young QB instead of benching him and going with a veteran? will he stay in the college game for long? will he enjoy recruiting the way CW and the current staff has?), and asking higher profile coaches are always a risk because when they say no it is an embarrassment to the program.

But at this point, it must be done. Teams will pillage our recruiting class, coaches will pillage our great assistants (Verducci, Alford...no!!!), but it must be done. If it's done quickly enough, the new coach can get out on the recruiting trail and try to keep our recruits as well as get some other ones. Many times change brings excitement and vitality to a program. Let's hope that when CW is inevitably fired and a new coach is hired, the freshness and excitement of the new coach will take this great base that CW has laid down and take it to new heights. It won't be easy, but the talent is there.

(Oh, and say bye to Clausen for sure now, and probably Tate and Te'o. It's been fun guys. You'll be missed...)

How is this schedule decidedly weak???????? Are you an SC fan or something? This schedule is in the 20's as far as strength of schedule, and it will only go up after the Stanford game. You want decidedly weak? Go look at the schedules of Texas, Penn State, Alabama, Florida, Cincinatti, etc. Those are weak schedules. Your argument is the weak thing here...

Well I see your point. 7-5 is better than 6-6. There is always next year though ! Questionable losses? How about more questionable wins?

Well, if the NCAA had any sense of propriety, they would send Notre Dame and Pitt back to Heinz field and it would be 4th and 16, still a long shot and Notre Dame would have two timeouts.

Seriously, if CW's going done he ought to go down swinging and the first punch I'd throw would be at the Big East officiating crew. The tape, starting with Floyd being interfered with would have gone to the NCAA last night.

God, why do you people think Clausen or Tate even are thinking about coming back? They are gone, folks. We have no 2010 Heisman contenders and we will have a new QB. It's a perfect time to fire our recruiter-in-chief.

how is this program on the upswing? because we pass for 400 yds each game? watch tape and you will see that we are behind in every game. a team on the upswing doesn't get it's ass kicked up until the 4th quarter in almost every game.

-can you tell me CW's overall record and winning percentage at ND?
-what is his record against winning teams?
-what is his record against ranked teams?
-what is his record with "his" recruits?
-who has led ND to the worst 2 year stretch in the HISTORY of ND football?

answer those questions and then ask yourself if this program is on the upswing.

I have not been an advocate of canning CW and I think any talk of a weak schedule this year is BS. Everyone with the exception of Washington St. had the potential to beat th Irish or many other teams in CFB review all of them.

With that said either some changes need to be made on defense or in total. I don't like the revolving foor coaching but other schools have been through this before (USC, UCLA, Nebraska etc). ND has set the bar pretty low for who they have brought in here the last 3 times. Bob Davie no HC experience, Ty one good season in a down PAC 10 year and CW riding Bilichek's coattails and no HC experience. I think a new regime would bring a much needed boost/shot in the arm this program needs. All of the names look better than what this program has had since Lou. My first pick would be Harbaugh if for nothing else he's got PC's number and went for 2. The next guy would be the Oregon St. coach who also has PC's number.

I don't see rebuilding as many have said because we have more talent in all the classes which wasn't there for CW in year 3 (thanks Ty, also another good reason he got canned). IF Ty and CW came in and put up big numbders in their first year why couldn't a new coach. Do we really think CW can get 10 wins next year especially if JC and GT leave?

Would a new regime keep any of the assistants? I would keep Hart, Verducci, Aenello, Alford and Young.

Verducci at the least is a Jersey guy and a pal of Weis. I don't see him staying if Charlie goes. The others....I say go to them right now and try to lock them into lucrative long term contracts (in assistant coaching terms).

Embarressment??? Its already an embarressment as if P.T. Barnum arranged it in his big top. We cant find a coach to take us to the top in 5-6 years gone ! Im all for a great coach....but knowing what goes on here who the hell would want to coach here.

Got to agree with jason, charlie is gone. CW has made great strides in recruiting, represented our team very very well off the field, but the results have not been good where they matter the most..... on the field.

I really do like the idea of harbaugh, but i dont see it happening..... maybe we can get the baltimore harbaugh, but i even doubt that.... it is a great idea though, first time i believe i have heard it mentioned on this board jason.

I take heat for this one alot, but I like meyer as a coach. I know he wont get a good welcome if he comes, but he can coach, recruit, and motivate like no other. He is not likely to come, but i would welcome him.

Harbaugh IMO has some great hatred for the irish(UM alum, but hell, so is Corwin). Maybe we can pull him or his brother here. Kelly isnt as proven as many think, and i dont like that idea of him here at all.

I want a proven guy, one who is almost a guarantee of big wins, or i dont want anyone but charlie. Harbaugh, Meyer, Stoops...... or keep charlie.

Verducci at the least is a Jersey guy and a pal of Weis. I don't see him staying if Charlie goes. The others....I say go to them right now and try to lock them into lucrative long term contracts (in assistant coaching terms).
A new head coach is going to want to bring in his own coaches. He isn't going to accept being trapped long-term with assistant coaches from somebody else's regime.

Meyer was unproven.

He went undefeated at Utah. Not exactly unproven. However, you are right. Some of the guys on this site just don't get it when it comes to what a head coach needs to do.

They base 90% of their assesment on Charlie by what Scout says he did in recruting. As if Scout knows anything about winning games and championships.

Meyer was unproven.

BGSU, Utah, Florida? All programs that went from medicore to powerhouses under his coaching. Hell, they continue winning after he is gone because his recruits are still there. Im confused how he is unproven, please explain.

BGSU, 3-8 to 8-3 first season, ranked consistently for 3 years.

Utah, lead team to an undefeated team that won the Fiesta Bowl in his third season.

Florida....... hmmmm. national champs 2 out of three last seasons, heading towards number 4. Has made his QB a national icon. Took other coaches recruits who underperformed and made them into elite talent.

I can understand some people saying he recruits in a shady style and his players have been in trouble with the law, but to say he is unproven as a coach is just plan wrong.

You can't seriously be this dumb. A new head coach is going to want to bring in his own coaches. He isn't going to accept being trapped long-term with assistant coaches from somebody else's regime.

Completely unnecessary comment.

and FYI, it is not uncommon for a new head coach to interview current assistants. Yes it is in the end the new coach's decision but is far from a certainty that the entire staff will be let go.

Actually the practice of keeping assistant coaches in the program isn't that uncommon anymore.
