My picks?

Evan Sharpley, QB: Many think the QB spot is J.Clausen's come next year, and if not either Frazer or Jones will take the job. Sharpley has a strong arm and most importantly in a Charlie Weis offense genius-level smarts (HS GPA 3.94 per Rivals). Kid threw for 3700 yards & 45 TD's as a HS Jr & Sr. Plus was Michigan's male athlete of the year as a Senior. 4-Star QB per Scout (#14 QB) & a 3-star per Rivals (#12 QB). He looked very good in the spring game - excellent accuracy, showed a strong arm on sideline routes, did fumble a snap though. I think he could be the biggest surprise on the team next year (if he wins the starting job; which IMO isn't as far-fetched as most would say)

Kyle McCarthy, S: a HS QB, McCarthy's biggest issue last season seemed to be how high the coaches were on his position-mate David Bruton. Bruton's strength and athleticism earned him some PT on special team's as a frosh, but now in their second years in the program it was KM turning heads in fall camp. So much so that McCarthy and Bruton were listed as co-backups at FS behind Tommy Z. Scout listed him as a 2-star corner (#74) & rivals a 3-star "Athlete" (#68). Another smart one - 3.75 HS GPA per Rivals. He's in the mix on special teams this season, and the battle for bFS will be in interesting one.

Any others???

Barry Gallup...... look out, word about Sharpley Clancy, he's good, no offfense to any of my Cali friends, but I'd rather see D.J. from Chi or a kid like Sharp from Mich or Zach from Penn then Hollywood. Jimmy is really good, not sure how big his heart is. I know DJ's got alot of heart. I really want Jones to play in 07

The kid is great, and with RM's performance in the AA game coupled with his season long injury last year, he has barely been talked about. He will be a GREAT CB, and will rank amoumg NDs all-time best when it is all said and done.

Under Ty I thought Chase was a disaster. He was used on kickoffs and seemed to have frequent communications problems with the other returner. When he didn't get the ball he turned upfield and rarely appeared to make a block. What a turnaround last year. Whether a change in attitude of just better coaching he was a significant contributor on Special Teams. He's fast and if he can make the same kind of improvement at WR that he made on Special Teams last year, he's gonna be the guy that stretches the field.

Holtz liked to comment that the favorite QB to ND fans was the one not playing. Paraphrase today to the favorite #2 QB to ND fans is any freshman. Sharpley's time in the program gave him an obvious edge and he didn't blow it. I don't know if he'll maintain that advantage through midseason but he's gonna make the other guys beat him out.

Based on the little bits of video from the practice camp I thought even the freshman safeties would beat McCarthy out. In one clip he was beaten badly, breaking left over the middle while the receiver was crossing directly in front of him from left TO right. TD! He apparently showed a lot more in the rest of the practices.
