Mike Paulus Quote

"Coach Weis told me they are only recruiting me and Jimmy Clausen at quarterback," Paulus said. "If Clausen picks another school, then he told me the spot is mine. I should get an idea from Notre Dame in a couple months what Clausen is going to do."

I guess this sheds some light on the QB situation for the Class of 2007. They're going to put all their chips in on Clausen and if he goes elsewhere, hope that Paulus can accept the Silver Medal.

How good is this kid? Not that it really matters as we are stacked at QB for the next few years.

He comes from a VERY nice pedigree. If I'm not mistaken, his brother plays PG for Duke and was one of the Top 5 QB prospects last year.

Correct.

He's 6-5, 220 and I think he is a legit senior of 17 or 18 whereas Jimmy Clausen is already 24 years old (Turns 19 in September).

He can air it out. Probably needs work on timing and footwork more than anything else. Has offers from Duke, Ole Miss, UNC and Louisville. Plays basketball (has offers) and baseball. 4.0 GPA.

After this year's haul, and with the progress Weis made with Quinn this season, I think this year the staff can gamble early on Clausen/Paulus. If both fall through early and Quinn is putting up huge numbers, a top QB somewhere will bite at the chance.

My preference of Clausen is based as much on the pied piper effect as anything else.

Yeah, doesn't really worry me too much. Even if they don't get a QB next year, between Sharpley, Frazer, & Jones I gotta think someone will work out w/ Weis as a mentor.

This is a difficult position to understand. If the quote is accurate (and I have no reason to believe it is not) ND is recruiting Paulus but will not offer him unless Clausen turns them down. If I were competing against ND for this guy I sure would use this against them. It has got to effect his ego that he is not the one that ND wants.

Oh well, such is the recruiting world!

I think what Paulus is saying is that he has already chosen Notre Dame and that Charlie was being honest with him when he said, the spot is yours if Clausen decides to go elsewhere.
It sounds to me like Paulus was trying to beat Clausen to the punch-like Jones over Mustain.

All this shows is that Weis is up front and honest with these kids. It sounds like they flat out told Paulus he's in if Clausen is out.

It's not that they don't want him, they just have someone else ahead of him on the board.

I'm surprised his brother turned down a chance to play both sports at ND to play only basketball at Duke. Seems like a shame to waste your football talent

If basketball were your preferred game, which school would you choose? Being good at both doesn't mean you love both equally. A few guys excel at both games, but your chance at excelling at either is better if you concentrate on it.

I wasn't. He knew he'd be a college QB and didn't have the size to be an elite NFLer but believes he has the talent to play in the NBA, so he went to Duke. I think he made the right choice and he is clutch.

Speaking of clutch... JJ Reddick is plain ridiculous.

I see where you guys are coming from, but if I had the chance to play and star in both I'd jump at the offer.

He probably weighed his options and saw that ND had an average bball program, and at the time an average football program. If ND footballl had the success they're having now, I wonder if his decision would've been different.

He probably lacks the size to be an ideal NFL QB, but I remember reading alot of articles from scouts saying he had a much better chance at an NFL career than an NBA career.

Playing two sports has worked out well for Jeff S

Greg Paulus is leading the ACC in assists as a frosh. I recall hearing that Coach K wouldn't let him play football and that he wanted to play both but went there anyway. I never did get the real story, but I suppose it is neither here nor there at this point.

Reddick is flat awesome. In the NBA, he'll be a Steve Kerr type shooter off the bench. He'll be a Lottery pick, though.

Duke Hoops gets a lot of hate for a lot of the same reasons ND Football does.

Monday's ESPN Feldman blog has Clausen leaning towards Notre Dame. I am not sure how credible Feldman is as a reporter but its nice to see this in print.

You read these articles lately about other recruits, I've seen four or five already where these kids mention Jimmy Clausen called him and talked about going to NOTRE DAME together. Not COLLEGE together, Notre Dame.

Think about it: He'll have Weis and Vaas tutoring him, a chance to compete for the spot to replace Quinn and he's on TV every single weekend. At SC, not everyone will see him. I had to pull an all nighter to watch that SC-Fresno State game because I live in ChiTown.

I think things really look good here.

And so far this year, I think that Mike Brey is saying the same thing EVERY NIGHT......

Agreeance. However, the candles are still being lit at the Grotto EVERY NIGHT until he/they sign.......I think LOID '07 is going to be EVEN BETTER for ND than LOID '06....

THE COMPLETION OF THE FOUNDATION.

I think Clausen will wait and see how good USC's starting QB does this year without Chow. The ND starting job will be open in 07', USC will probably have Mark Sanchez starting the next three or four years.

I thought I read on this board not long ago the Matt Simms was offered a schollie? Hope not I watched his championship game this season and was not impressed whatsoever....

Weis is talking to Simms, but no offer has been made public as of yet.

Matt Simms??? Please tell me this is not the other son of Phil Simms? His first son was not that good. Couldn't win the big game and has disappointed as an NFL QB. But, with Weis, who knows.

I don't know if I'd cash in the Chris Simms NFL stock just yet. How many games has he started? 12?

As for Matt, Matt is better than Chris was in high school and is a righty. And Chris was pretty highly touted.

At Texas, he was 26-6 as a starter. I'd kill for that record based on what ND has been through lately. Football is a team sport, as we are all aware of. He didn't win 26 on his own and he surely didn't lose 6 on his own either.

To judge a kid based on his older brother, who really wasn't that bad, is a recruiting philosophy I don't think CW is going to take.

At this point, it is Clausen or Paulus anyway. Young Simms is a back back burner plan.

Yet you probably want Jimmy Clausen?

I'm not saying Simms is any good. But you certainly can't judge Simms based on his brother. Besides, football isn't played in a vaccuum. Coaching makes a difference.

Chris had some major hype when he was in high school, he was always in all of the NY papers. Matt hasn't had much hype for some reason, maybe for his sake thats a good thing.

I thought Chris did an ok job with the bucs this year considering it was his first year starting. Played well in the Bucs playoff loss

Ya Simms threw one of the best balls I've ever seen in that playoff game. Would have won the game if the reciever would have hung on to the ball. I'm not a Bucs fan and I didnt follow Simms this year but if he can consistantly make that kind of throw in a high pressure situation I'm sure he will have a good NFL career.
