His name was Harold Henderson. We knew him as Radioman Master Chief Henderson, the Command Master Chief at Patrol Squadron One, United States Navy. We often referred to him as "Top Gun", due to his resemblance to the "cargo plane full of rubber dog $*%&" actor from the movie. He was a model sailor, and a man you just couldn't help but admire and respect. He was hardcore, but also had no problems talking to you as a person, not just a subordinate. He left this Earth way too soon (Sep 1995), of his own hand. Not all warriors fall in battle. I will never know the reason(s) for his suicide, but I will be eternally grateful for the couple of years that I had under his command, learning many lessons about leadership and life that I still carry with me today. RIP!

Personal pet peeve: when ppl conflate Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

I don't mean this to really be aimed just at you, IrishFF, but I especially don't want to hear the generic lip service "thank you for your service" on today of all days.

Memorial Day is specifically for those vets who died while serving. Those ppl deserve to be remembered and honored on a day all by themselves. Their sacrifice is that important.

Thinking of my Uncle Duffy. Didn't die in Vietnam, but came back with whatever condition from agent orange which he eventually died of years later.

Exactly. Send up a prayer today for all of those service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
