Brian Kelly just said Matt Romine is not a possibility for a 5th year.

Can I get any clarification on this?

Is Romine done? I guess Niklas took his spot.

I dont think that Niklas took his spot unless this was Bennetts spot before he left for OU.

How much more clarification can you get than Kelly?

If you were watching the press conference, Kelly asked someone else, I suspect the head of player development, and echoed that person's response. At other schools the head coach gets to make the determination on who gets to come back. At ND a faculty committee decides who is academically eligible for a 5th year scholarship. The coach say who he would offer (or who he wants back) but if the faculty committee say, "No!" The player is finished. Also something to keep in mind at other schools you do your 5th year finishing up your undergraduate degree. ND expects you to get your undergraduate degree in 4 years. ND's 5th years are graduate school slots, hence the faculty committee determining whether a student athlete is grad school material. Another obstacle the head coach at ND has to deal with that the Alabama's and Oklahoma's don't have to deal with.

Romine might have been on the bubble and if only 22 recruits signed on he might have had a chance to come back. The faculty might also have said, he doesn't fit the criteria. We don't know and ND isn't going to elaborate.

Well, I obviously understood that Kelly said "No", but Kelly was acting hesitant and was asking someone else if Romine was done.

Maybe Kelly knew Romine was done, but didn't want to get in trouble again for speaking too soon.

Either way, the question and answer was a pretty awkward situation.

Agreed. I suspect he was checking with the Director of Player Development.

This is Kelly's first year dealing with ND's policy with 5th years. They usually aren't revealed until late Feb or early March which has hindered ND coaches in the past in maximizing Signings. ND is going to oversigned but the timing of the 5th year announcement has resulted in undersigning in the past.

Kelly's annoucement that Ruffer was getting a 5th year scholarship probably got him "counseled" that it wasn't his determination (like it probably was at Cincinnati) but a Faculty Committte that makes that determination at ND.

Another tihng Kelly learned about recruiting and coaching at ND.

Alright thanks, I guess Kelly doesn't have as much say in matters as I thought he did.

Thanks BGIF.

Gonna miss Matt though. Seemed to be a great guy, I'm sure he'll put his degree to good use.

...

There are a lot of ND fans that aren't aware of that. It's not widely discussed. Fans of other schools have no knowledge of it at all.

The guys that want to get a 5th year football scholarship, do need Kelly's blessing obviously that a spot is available for them. So he does have some say but not like the other schools.
