Vick may be done at Va. Tech
By Norm Wood
Tribune Newspapers: Newport News Daily Press
January 6, 2006

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech will suspend quarterback Marcus Vick for an undetermined number of games next season if he returns to school, according to two sources within the athletic department who asked to remain anonymous. The suspension is the result of Vick stomping on a Louisville player's leg in the first half of Monday's Gator Bowl.

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer will meet with Brenda Boddie, Vick's mother, and Vick to discuss the player's options Friday. If Vick doesn't accept the suspension, he will either have to transfer to another school or turn pro.

In order to gain immediate eligibility next season by transferring, he'd have to go to a Division I-AA or lower level school. Vick said at a news conference Dec. 29 that he doesn't plan to enter the National Football League draft in April.

This is the latest controversy for Vick. The school suspended him for the 2004 season after convictions for reckless driving and marijuana possession and because he was convicted in May 2004 of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Vick, 21, re-enrolled at Tech in January 2005. He won the starting job and led the Hokies to an 11-2 season.

If this is true, I have to say to Virginia Tech: FINALLY.

Marcus Vick might be the biggest scumbag ever to play college football since I've been around this Earth.

If I were an NFL GM, I wouldn't touch him. But someone will (Raiders?).

This is where the NCAA should step in but won't. This guy should not be on a college football field. He is a disgrace.

He should have been thrown out of the game and thrown off the team when that incident happened.

Juggs, before we salute VT for taking action let's see what the penalty is!!

All of this assumes the report is valid.

I'm not giving them any credit at all. They should dismiss him entirely or suspend him for the first month of the year. Will they? No.

He should have been suspended for giving the finger to the WVU fans earlier this year.

The guy gets away with a lot because of what his brother was to the school.

He is a joke and should never have been allowed to go to college, he should be flipping burgers for me at a local McDonalds or picking up my trash not getting prestige and honors.

I saw him step on that guy's leg. That was a despicable action and he should be suspended for at least half a season. You don't do stuff like that. He could have really injured the guy and hurt his future career. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Evidently the refs missed it, which doesn't surprise me because the officiating was terrible in almost every bowl game I watched. They should have ejected him from the game. It's evident that Vick just hasn't learned his lesson. He can't stay out of trouble.

I hate this kid with a passion. I dont know why its so hard to just follow the rules and go to class and play football. He doesnt even have to worry about tuititon. Why does this kid always have to act like a badass? He is nothing but a punk and a thug. If somehow he goes to the pros and gets drafted somewhere (Raiders probably) he will be all over the NFL blotter with the sh*t he pulls. He and Clarett should be in a cell together.

As if Va Tech wasn't embarrassed enough by Vick's lack of sportsmanship in the Gator Bowl, he was ticketed for speeding and driving with a suspended license, suspended from school, and STILL ALLOWED TO PLAY! If that isn't a slap in the face of the term "student-athlete" then I don't know what is. Talk about winning at all costs.

he had an incident a couple of years ago with some 14 year old girls, I had no respect for him after that. I guess he looks up to R Kelly and not his brother.

One of the interesting sides to this story is that he was dismissed by the school administration ( same as Rashon) and NOT by the football coach. He was thrown out of school which automatically put him off the team. I only make this distinction because i can find no indication of whether Beamer agreed this decision. He met with Vick's mother to announce the dismissal.

I believe Vick would have been thrown out earlier if Beamer did not have so much power at VT. The only basis I have for this assumption is my total disrespect for Beamer and the program he runs. He is the very essence of the "winning is everything" character. And don't think for a minute that he is not the most important person at VT! The president will be fired before Beamer.

You haven't heard the last of him. He'll end up in an NFL camp, then the Arena League and probably jail.

Maybe not in that order, either.

Don, At first I though good for you Virginia Tech then I read the actual articles. Despite the various media headlines, I don't think "he was thrown out of school. I believe he was just kicked off the team by the University.

Vick, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, was suspended from school in 2004 for several legal problems. The junior came under new and intense scrutiny this week after replays showed he stomped on the left calf of Louisville All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil during the Jan. 2 bowl.
No penalty was called on the play and Vick claimed its was accidental. He further hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader, but the Louisville player said no such apology was ever offered.
On Friday, it was revealed that Vick had been stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license in Hampton on Dec. 17, Cpl. James West said. Vick's license had been taken away in August 2004 when he was cited for reckless driving and marijuana possession in New Kent County.
Steger suspended Vick from school at that time, and warned that any additional problems would effectively end his time as a member of the Hokies' football team.

"The university provided one last opportunity for Vick to become a citizen of the university and readmitted him in January 2005, with the proviso that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team," Steger said Friday.
Beamer said in a statement that he was disappointed with the outcome. "We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus," he said. "I certainly wish him the best."

"I'm very disappointed that this didn't have a better ending," coach Frank Beamer said of Marcus Vick
.

Any reference to dismissal is to the Team NOT the University. Come Saturday VT may announce he's been thrown out of school but for now they've merely kicked him off the team after all the games were played. And it appears from the Beamer quotes and his trip to the player's home a couple of hours from campus that Beamer was overruled by the University President.

Shame on him.

BGIF, I stand corrected on his being thrown out of school, As you said he was thrown off the team.

The effect is the same to me because I can't believe he was ever really IN the school. He has since announced his intention to enter the draft so the point is moot.

I can't believe Beamer agreed to this action, but as i said that was only an assumption. I think he is the type who would never endorse a suspension of his QB no matter what the violation

From the TV news reports it seemed he was tossed out of school as it was the President being quoted. You had to actually read an article, carefully, to pick out that it he was only dismissed from the team and that the President and Beamer disagree over the action.

I thought Beamer was supposed to be one of the "good guys". I think you've got him pegged correctly.

Put this whole story into context. Marcus Vick was suspended from the team for providing alcohol to 14 and 15 year old girls. Later that summer he was arrested for reckless driving and marijuana possession. Then he was reinstated under a "zero tolerance" policy. Then he gave the finger to West Virginia fans. Then he was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license. Though dismissed from the university, he was not dismissed from the team. In thier defense they had the Gator Bowl to worry about. Then he stepped on Elvis Dumervil's calf. Three incidents later he is finally dismissed from the team. At this point he shows zero remorse, refuses to admit he stepped on Dumervil's calf on purpose, and he has yet to apologize to his coach, team, or university. And then last night on Sportscenter they report that Va Tech will allow him back into school to earn his degree. I'm sure he'll be all over that offer.

I think the best part of this story is that most people either explain, or in some cases dismiss, his action against Dumervil as something he did "in the heat of the moment." Newsflash Marcus: guys like Dumervil are a dime a dozen in the NFL. IF you are drafted, you're going to get your ass handed to you and America is going to love it. If you're not drafted, enjoy Europe. Marijuana and underage drinking are legal in many countries.

Remember, this is the same Beamer (and/or his staff) that was telling recruits this year that "you don't want to go to ND. They treat black people REALLY BAD there". (Also, for the record, it was said that Syracuse was quoted as saying the same).

Va Tech, like Iowa and others, have players living in subsidized housing. I believe it was BGIF's post. Va Tech was one of the schools on the list.

Marcus Vick apologized to Va Tech and the fans. Sure, only because he got caught.

This guy is a loose cannon that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

There are guys with tremendous heart, killing themselves for a shot at playing major college football and maybe a dream of playing in the NFL. But they don't get it because they don't have enough ability and talent. Then there's Marcus Vick with natural NFL talent, but he blows every opportunity and chance he has over and over.

What the hell?

yeah, I just read that. Freaking ridiculous. He's not getting drafted. Then again, there's a part of me that says there's a GM out there stupid enough to draft him.

He'll get picked. I have no doubt in my mind. Even if he doesn't, he'll get a shot in camp to win a spot.

If you have talent, the modern day athlete in America is forgiven very quickly. Vick will get his opportunity. And he'll blow it.

Give this guy a few thousand $ K a year and see what happens. He has a sense of entitlement because his older brother spreads herpes to everyone.
