Word is the family hired a public relations firm to coordinate the entire thing. I'm not sure how deep Weis' role was. My theory is that he suggested Clausen announce the morning of the Blue and Gold Game while these other players were present, and the Clausens took it from there. That's what I hope anyway. Weis wanted it to be noticed, but the limo stunt was the family's business.

If it was a public relations move for recruiting, they went all out.

Poodle's NFL Pro Day was quite a big to-do.

I don't find Farrell's piece convincing at all. Personally, I don't care about the hats, but I find the stretch Hummer completely obnoxious. And why can't he announce from CA that he's going to ND? I don't get it. He's gonna catch just as much flack from the USC homers no matter where he makes the announcement. And Michigan has signed plenty of QBs from CA; I don't recall Tom Brady having to come to AA to make the announcement....

Personally, I think Clausen's announcement was calculated to do one thing and one thing only: hype Jimmy Clausen. And I hate hype. Our world is drowning in it.

To me, it is a hell of alot more obnoxious, inconsiderate, and down right rude to put 3-5 hats in front of you, pick up a hat of a school( that has visited you and your family, had a coach fly across the country to see you practice and talk to your coach, make contact on the phone several times a week, and go all out in the hopes that you would honor the school by considering them) and throw it in a garbage can or toss behind their shoulder as if to say"Well, thanks for your time but kiss my a$$". Clausen had his moment.

The above mentioned description is something that we all saw SEVERAL TIMES at the AA Game. Are there any posts or criticisms of this on any sites that you have read? I can bet that there is not as many as all of the complaints made against Clausen and his announcement. If I remember correctly, Clausen did not even mention any other school or try to knock anyone down while making his announcement. Did he take a squirt on a Michigan hat? No. Did he wipe his a$$ with a USC shirt? No. Kid rode to campus, with family and friends, in a REALLY nice stretched. Get over it haters. If he was riding down the streets of Ann Arbor in a stretched hanging out the window with a Michigan pom pom, this would not even be mentioned by you guys.

yeah, it was a fair amount of hype for a high school commit. but that's the world we live in.

listen - ND didn't start the hype on this kid. It was started by uber-obsessive attention piled upon him by the sporting media since he stepped on the field several years ago. and it's continued to build since then. and now all the u-m, so cal, ohio state, et al fans expect the hype to come to a screeching halt when he publicly announces his school of choice?

hypocrites. all of you.

fans - all of us - are the same fans that keep the recruiting industry juggernaut chugging steadily forward, paying subscription fees up the a$$ to catch the slightest tidbit of info on what the latest varsity stud had for breakfast this morning.

anybody not catch the fact that oglesby verballed to wisconsin today? case in point. we track these kids so closely that as soon as a recruit opens his mouth, the domino effect begins, where the fans from his school of choice titter with joy, while the rest of us either bash the kid for not picking our school, dismiss his talent potential, or downplay the fact that we actually wanted him in the first place.

clausen's announcement was the culmination of a tremendous amount of hype. stop acting like he should have kept it confined to his living room and a phone call to the coach. he handled himself with poise, avoided the 'slow-roll' (for you poker players out there) BS that so many kids pull these days, and displayed a respectful humility in the face of all that hype.

if you knew who clausen was before he announced, sorry to say, you were part of the hype. to borrow a phrase from jigga - my heart pumps piss for the hypocrisy and indignation of college football fans that lap up the hype on every other day of the year EXCEPT the one where jimmy clausen commits to ND.

This reminds me of Chris Simms of Texas. This guy is posing to the cameras as a Junior in high school! In these cases, rarely does the player live up the hype. And, that my point. With his arrogance and thirst for attention, I can't imagine how this can be good for the team. The fact that Weis let his happen is amazing, perhaps a sign of his own misguided arrogance (which I can only hope he has). We would never tolerate that behavior here. Maybe a little talk, but no showboating like this. Of course, we always play well when the cameras are off (1997) and the expectations are not unrealistically high. These types of stunts, coupled with the humbleness of our future QB, will only benefit us.

Agreed, it does vaguely remind me of Chris Simms. A bit over the top if you ask me, but not as outrageous as some.

HOWEVER, VV you are totally INCORRECT in your assessment of "arrogance". JCs statements come from CONFIDENCE and laser-like focus on a goal. I know that at ND, the goal EVERY YEAR is the NC, maybe it's not so in AA, as please tell me how an alleged 'most storied' CFB program in America can claim that, but go 48 years between titles???? Well, you always can fall back on trying to win the Big Interger title, if that makes you happy.

It would be ARROGANT if he stated "We ARE GOING TO WIN 4 NCs in MY time here at ND", but that is NOT what he said. Was JC cocky? ABSOLUTELY! Arrogant? NOT A CHANCE. Besides, I'm damn happy that we've finally got a bit of a swagger again (MBrey and ND mens bball team PLEASE TAKE NOTE)

Is CW a bit arrogant? cocky? confident? ABSOLUTELY and you know what, he has the bona fides to back it up. His mouth is writing checks that his body can definitely cash. While hating to lose, he's NOT a sore loser, as it is well-documented in various pictures after games that someone who prowls the grounds in AA appears to be.....or maybe manboobs has something against hand shaking.....

Give me a confident, cocky, even a bit arrogant 'fat man' who can bring it, over an unsure, wavering, whining lactating weasel anyday.

FINALLY, WTF???? I guess Desmond Howard doing the Heisman Pose everywhere doesn't count as showboating....or in your view does it count as a little talk???? And I guess Charles Woodson is a model citizen as well, or is it that RaiderNation has corrupted him?

You posit "these types of stunts"......Please list these 'stunts' that you allege or or you looking in the future and seeing many more *****, Top 100 recruits coming ND's way????

It's too bad that the ND/UM series will likely end when the current contract is finished, I'd have liked to put some distance between us in the head-to-head records.

REALLY FINALLY, I have an ideal replacement, bring on 'BAMA!!! At least they strive for (and claim!!!) the NC every year, rather than their conference's title......
