Sportswriters are lazy. Not all of them, of course, but many. The same storylines crop up every single year. I always get a kick out of the NFL guys talking college ball anyway. You know Chris Collinsworth has no clue about college football, same with Costas, but they go to them anyway. In NBC's case, they are just plugging Sunday Night Football. For my money, I'm listening to guys who actually spend time around the game, the guys who call the ND games, and an actual coach like Paterno. These other guys don't live in the same world.
