Let's put this in perspective.
UCLA came into the game with the 9th ranked defense in the country and Notre Dame sat at 75th. On offense, we were ranked 34th and UCLA ranked 66th. This game, from the outset, was a defensive battle. There was a reason UCLA's defense was ranked that high and our offensive line got to see it up close and personal today.
That said, we did enough to pull out the win. If you remove the two long plays by UCLA, you're looking at close to a shutout for Notre Dame. We played well against a very tough, capable defense. We won the battles that mattered, especially on fouth downs going 4 for 5. Additionally, our defense looked like a Top 10 unit today holding UCLA under 250 yards including only 26 yards on 28 rushing attempts.
Could the offense have played better? Sure. The bottom line is that this was a damn fine performance, in retrospect, against a Top 10 defense. And it was a win.
