Well, at the end of the day, I think the parting will be amicable. I think that CW knew the score when he took the job, he talked about what was good enough and what wasn't. He has nothing to be ashamed of because he threw himself into this job, tried his damndest, did all the right things in terms of getting the talent necessary and it wasn't enough. Charlie Weis just isn't built to be the CEO of an organization; he's a great regional manager though.

I hope the school thanks him for his hard work and lets him know that they were proud to have him represent the University of Notre Dame and that they are proud to call him an alum. I hope Charlie is still proud to be an alum and I hope that he doesn't harbor any resentment towards the school, its fans and alumni.

I was sad to hear about his kids being taunted at school but, when that type of stuff comes out, it sounds like Charlie may--even before today--have been began displaying the telltale signs of a man whose defense mechanisms are kicking into high gear. He needs to rationalize why he and his family will be better off outside of South Bend. The way he cut off the sideline reporter post-game seemed to fit right in with what I think I'm seeing, too. I hope the memories he takes with him are from the exciting USC games, two BCS bowls and other such events.

Tyrone Willingham had piss poor recruits; his results at Washington say it all. And, uh, he was never "very good at Stanford".

1995 Stanford 7–4–1
1996 Stanford 7–5
1997 Stanford 5–6
1998 Stanford 3–8
1999 Stanford 8–4
2000 Stanford 5–6
2001 Stanford 9–3

That doesn't look "very good" to me. That looks average with a year or two of being slightly above average.

Agree...I'm sick of the Ty crap...the ONLY reason he got a sniff is because JOE freaking MONTANA endorsed him...he didn't belong in big time programs, never shoud have gotten this job...had proven exactly 0 before he got it.

Willingham is the shining example for why Alum and boosters need to stay the hell out of this process...Swarbrick makes his money by making these decisions...and he needs to own the decision so he can be held accountable if its wrong...I don't begrudge Alum and boosters their voice in evaluating performances of the existing staff...but STAY OUT OF THE SELECTION PROCESS...YOU add a dimension that just should not be part of selecting a coach...think of how ole' White felt when Joe Mon came out for willingham...how'd that go????!

Now, the original sentiment of this post...Totally agree...reflects where I am 100%. If Charlie got another year I'd be disappointed, but, with the right head coach we have some tools...man do we have some tools...

They play in the Pac-10 and have stricter academic standards than even us. He was a good coach at Stanford.

As to his recruiting ability - ND had some pretty good players in 2005&6.

okay, you had me at.....well, uh maybe not. you clearly showed your ineptness when you said "pac-10" have stricter academic standards than nd.

stanford maybe...but washington, not. get your facts straight.

and to compare ty to cw.....well, once again you've lost all creditability with even bringing up the argument.

I read a good article yesterday, I can't remember where, about how this day should go at Notre Dame Stadium.

Remember 2005 and 2006? We had some good times with Charlie. The caliber of players he's recruited is certainly a boon to the University--yes, Notre Dame can still recruit. He brought ND back into the discussion--for good and bad reasons.

What does that all add up to? Well, this is going to sound weird but take it in context: Charlie Weis is like the girlfriend most of us have had that we thought we would marry, we had some great times, times got a little harder, we thought we were coming back out of the bad times but it just didn't materialize. I remember the one I had like that before I met my wife....and when it was over it didn't get ugly, it wasn't childish; we laughed, talked about how we can't believe it didn't work out and vowed to be friends. We never dissed one another in public, there is a quiet respect and reverence and we're grateful for the good times we shared and the growth we facilitated in one another through the years.

And so today, it would seem, is Charlie Weis's last game at Notre Dame Stadium. People should think back to where the program was headed, talent wise, before he arrived. We should take today, especially those lucky enough to be at the game, to applaud Charlie's hard work because he did work his ass off. We should thank him because this program is better off today than it was five years ago.

I hope that Charlie Weis remains a fan of Notre Dame, I hope when Notre Dame fans see Charlie Weis in the years to come that they view him with respect and appreciation because, though it didn't work out, we're certainly better off than we were five years ago.

He deserves a standing ovation today, not for mediocrity, but because he inspired a lot of hope. Charlie Weis is ultimately a victim of his own hard work and high expectations. The standards he set for the program are now being thrown back in his face: 9-3 isn't good enough, schematic advantage, outworking your opponents, etc. But wasn't it refreshing to be inspired again? We believed what he said because he did work hard, he did recruit well and because we had seen him do it with lesser players in '05 and '06.

I've been critical of the man, but hopefully fair in my criticism. Today I thank Charlie and I think to myself that it seemed so right but it just didn't work out. And I'm not bitter; I'm thankful for the time we had with Charlie Weis. I hope everybody, ardent supporters and detractors, step back and put it all in context. He may not have earned the right to coach Notre Dame next year but he at least deserves credit for what he did do and what he tried to do.

Well said. God bless Charlie and his team.

I know we havent always seen eye to eye on every issue, but to me this is the best post you have ever written. I could not agree more. I am not ashamed to admit that when I saw Charlie walk arm in arm with the team onto the field, I had tears in my eyes just like he did. I am only 27 years old and I only remember 4 coaches, Holtz, Davie, Willingham and Weis. I never cared about what others thought about Weis or ND, so the more people hated him, the more I liked him. I have never wanted a coach to succeed as much as I did Charlie.

So Charlie, tonight I say thank you. Thank you for making me believe in Notre Dame football again. Thank you for putting everything you have into the program. If you didnt give a shit, I would say good riddance. But you love Notre Dame as much as I do, and for that I say thank you.

Still think Charlie will be here when Manti returns from his two-year mission?

I didn't say Pac-10 has higher academic standards - I said Stanford does and they definitely do. Get your reading skills straight.

And compared to Ty what? He has a worse record than Ty. That is a FACT. You may like him better, but you measure on WINS/LOSSES and graduation rates. Not PERCEIVED recruiting class rankings. I don't care if we are top 10 in recruiting, as ranked by some service, if it doesn't translate onto the field.

Also, Ty at least won some big games. Charlie won none. Additionally, Ty never lost to Navy or was 3-9. I don't care if we had recruiting classes ranked in the 50s - a 3-9 season should never happen at Notre Dame.

The only thing Charlie beat Ty at was longevity, and the lesson there is that probably we were right to cut Ty at three years. We should probably have done the same with Charlie.

"they play in the pac-10 and have better academic standards than even us." let me ask you this.....where is stanford in that sentence? the 'have better academic standards than even us' can be applied to either the 'they' or 'the pac-10' of the sentence.

why don't you get your writing skills straight before you want to break bad with me. any english professor would chew that statement up and spit it out. your only argument is that you expect those reading your lame statement to assume what you meant.

so i read it and assumed incorrectly, sue me.

as far as ty being a better coach than cw....that's all debatable. you want to live in a fantasy world and believe that ty is better. but cw is the one that had to clean up ty's mess. and then ty goes to uw and creates another messy situation.

so cw brought nd back to prominence and ty drove two programs into the ground. yeah....sure ty's a better coach.
