I also just saw that usc was on his list according to rivals.com. I guess it depends on what website you trust more. Personaly I like rivals over scout.

One would have to assume that he may like USC. I don't think he will end up there, but year in and year out USuCks keeps bringing in the big recruit, no pun intended.

USC's recruiting methods these days are pretty simple: Offer the five best guys at each position and land one or two at each. Oglesby is highly touted, so it makes perfect sense that he has an offer from SC.

I can't help but think this is going to end up costing USC. With this broad stroke recruiting approach they are using, eventually kids will end up going places where the coaches have shown genuine interest.

It kind of did this year.

They missed out on Tebow, Andre Smith, Gerald McCoy, Marcus Sims, Konrad Reuland and Sam Young.

The main thing that will help SC is they pretty much have California fenced off now. Reuland was an exception. I don't expect high quality talent from SoCal to stray far as long as they're winning.

But aren't we expecting THE high quality SoCal talent to stray this year? And hopefully bring his RB and a few scattered friends with him?

That appears to be the case.

But I'm not sold on it. If Clausen decides early, ND would seem to have a good chance. I don't rule out South Carolina or Tennessee either.

Now the longer he waits into USC's season, the more he is going to be looking at who replaces Leinart: Booty or Sanchez. If it is Sanchez and he performs well, SC might be out. If Sanchez struggles, advantage SC in my book.

Clausen and Tyler are just two players. SC has Long Beach Poly locked up and there are plenty of other juniors in that state that ND can't even touch because of grades.

As for Oglesby, he is planning multiple trips to Michigan and enjoyed the camp there. They were also one of the first schools to offer him.

True, but Cali is no different than any other talent rich state with a major power. Ohio St. will lock up most of the best Ohio players. The big three have a tight hold on Florida. And the best of Texas usually seem eager to jump on with the Horns pretty early.

That doesn't mean ND can't get top guys out of these states. We need to pick and choose our battles based on possibilities. Clausen fits this strategy. He is a top SoCal guy that is NOT a lock to USC. Ben Martin in Ohio is another example. I'm not sure about our chances in Florida, but we did OK with Young and Wenger this year.

They'll be VERY selective. They have taken 10 Cali players in the last 5 classes, two of whom were Parrish and Bonelli. This year, they offered three CA players, four if you count Kai Forbath. Never had a chance with Ausberry, but Austin seemed pretty interested.

SC's last classes have broken down as such:

2006- 25 players, 15 CA
2005- 19 players, 14 CA
2004- 19 players, 14 CA
2003- 28 players, 25 CA
2002- 22 players, 18 CA

This comes down to grades and character. Certain guys will have an interest in ND because of the academics, but these numbers don't lie. Most of these guys are all top notch prospects (or were). Same with TX, OH and FL.

Carroll really went national this year and it showed. They only took 15 CA guys out of 25.

I thought the previos staff concentrated a bit too much on Cali. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but the number of offers to Cali players far outnumbered the kids we got, I believe.

As I said above, I think Weis and staff will pick their battles carefully.

Distance, grades, weather, all make it difficult for ND to compete with USC in Calif. But the most important factor is WINNING. As long as USC continues to WIN they will be hard to beat in recruiting as well as on the field.

There may be an ocasional Reuland or even a Clausen but the overall quality of the USC recruiting will continue to garner the top prospects in the state. Carroll, for all his faults, is at the top of the recruiting world. When Weis beats him on the field we may see a major change.
