Clemson has a slight lead on Notre Dame for DE Jamie Crumbie. Cumbie plans to make a decision around the end of May or in early Summer. Cumbie is also a baseball prospect and is 5-1 with 2 saves this season with a 90mph fastball. He said if he goes to college for football, he will not play baseball. Cumbie also said he favors playing defensive end in college.

my whole take on guys like this, if they are not going to come to ND, then go to a school we dont play...just as long as he doesnt end up at SC or UM or any other rival

I was thinking about this in regards to Walls. Losing a guy to Michigan or USC sucks. I guess if Cumbie goes to Clemson, good for him. He's from down there and it makes sense. And it has no bearing on ND because they won't have to see Clemson unless it's in a bowl game. Watching Shuan Cody and Steve Smith destroy ND as Trojans hurt because they should have been Irish.

it makes me ill everytime i think about that.

what killed me was he goes on ESPN and trashes the program about the Ty firing. Its like, if you cared so much about keeping a black head coach at a prominent school, then why didn't you go play for him? makes him seem so hypocritical to me.

Affirmative. As my memory serves me, he had narrowed it down to ND and SC. Stayed close to home.

don't forget Carson Palmer, he was a huge ND fan, and most felt he was a lock for ND. But he never received an offer from ND because his grades didn't meet the requirements.

Leinart also grew up a Notre Dame fan.

If I remember right Leinart couldn't come b/c of his grades. makes him slamming the program seem even more ridiculous

Palmer, like Bush, Booker and TJ Duckett were all accepted. The simply chose to go elsewhere. Popular urban myth is that they didn't get in because of grades.

I read the SI article too years ago. Too bad it was more Hatorade ND bashing.

I read Palmer didn't receive an offer, though he really wanted one. In high school he had a 2.6 GPA and a 910 on his SAT. Those numers are real boderline to get an offer from ND. With a score of only 910 on his SAT, he'd probably need like a 3.0 or better GPA to get an offer.

Bush and Booker were accepted for sure. Bush played us, and played TY even more....

Booker pulled a huge bait and switich. He put an FSU hat on his head on signing day. All the more proof to my theory....verbals mean nothing. The morning after signing day is what really counts.

Paddy Mullen is still going to take all his other visits. Recruits nowadays just want to be pampered....

I think that the NCAA should come up with some type of rule that prohibits verbals from taking official visits. Most of these guys do indeed know where they're going anyway.

Found this out of a newspaper in South Carolina dated May 23rd:

Defensive end Jamie Cumbie (6-foot-7, 265 pounds) of Morris, Ill., said he plans to make a decision “in a couple of weeks to a month,” and he has narrowed his list to the Irish and the Tigers. Clemson coach Tommy Bowden and assistant David Blackwell visited Cumbie’s school last week.

“It’s going to be a tough decision,” said Cumbie, who grew up in Andrews and moved to Illinois a few years ago. “I’m just going to make the decision where I’m going to excel the most, where I will feel overall at home. It’s just got to be in my heart. It’s got to be true.”

Let's all pray folks

Some say he's the best overall prospect Illinois has to offer this year. This would be big to get this guy. If he gets any bigger, he might end up on the offensive line.

Disagree -- let the kids be kids. Then a verbal would be binding so next thing you would have "tentative commits" in the end of Sophomore high school year. Additionally, My daughter told ND she was going there (not athlete - student only) yet still went to visit Duke, BU, Penn etc. If she found that she liked another school better, so be it. This is part of growing up. (fortunately she didn't  )

If kids be kids you mean Willie Williams going to Florida and assaulting people and hosing down hallways with fire extinguishers, not good.

Student athletes running around all over the country for free vacations can only lead to bad things. Got Colorado? Willie Williams knew he was going to Miami and went on all his visits to take advantage of the fact that he's grown up without a pot to piss in or window to throw it out. I can't blame him, but it doesn't make it right. Situations like those are going on everywhere. Call me cynical, but I can put you in touch with some coaches that will tell you horror stories about all kinds of places not on ESPN. CU is the tip of the iceberg.

These recruiting trips get a little rediculous with the money these schools spend on these guys. Binge drinking, prostitution, bar brawls. Call it what it is. These guys narrow their lists down to less than five and usually less than three.
