the only thing that can stop jamarcus russell is jamarcus russell.
Please don't start the minter crap. This guy is a good quarterback that knows how to play the game.Maybe he wont have a very good day in which he has had a few of those days.

My opinion on this is either a close low scoring notre dame win or a complete blow out by lsu.
It's just gonna be kinda hard to hope this guy keeps making mistakes for 4 quarters.

He's done it before. The problem is their back-up lit up Miami for 40+ last year. Ouch.

Jamarcus Russell is a good QB. If we can't put pressure on him he'll eat us alive. Pressure is the key, he's prone to make mistakes under pressure. So the keys to the game for me are pressure the QB, and ball control. If we do those things we have a good chance. But if we don't, get ready to hear alot of the LSU fight song!

Agreed. He is one of the better athletes in the country, however, does have his moments where he couldn't hit water if he fell off of a boat. Let's hope that January 3rd is one of those special times.

PRESSURE...PRESSURE...PRESSURE!

So, you're saying Notre Dame can't score on this team.

I think we can score on this team ... at least a bit. Ain't no high school-style SEC offense we got here in South Bend ... those LSU boys are going to see some things they ain't used to.

yeah,i typed that didn't I?
no i made a mistake.that was the other guy.the pessimistic one that hasn't had his morning coffee yet.

weis can use aldrigde too. Both darius and james are going to have to find a way to keep the ball running on their feet. This game can't turn into a one dimensional game midway second quarter...it can't.
last year was the first year in i don't know how long that when quinn threw the ball up everyone had confidence it would get caught. This year is almost flipping back to the past and you never know what to expect and the same goes for the running game.
My only concern is what's going to be going through certain players minds if lsu does go up by a few scores

ah crap, what's gonna happen is gonna happen and saturday a whole lot of people really gave ucla a chance didn't they?

i said no minter comments either, but if there is a problem with minter maybe weis could take something from holtz.Maybe he could just take control of the defense too. What's he got to lose...it's just a game that noone is giving the irish a chance in.

How do we get pressure on a scrambling QB? We have never been able to do that in the past.

I have a feeling that Minter would have had the same gameplan in place regardless of who we played in a bowl game.

I don't envision them putting in Perrilioux, and in that case LSU won't have a scrambling QB. Russell is big and can throw pretty well on the run but he's not all that fast. He's big (6'6") and has big play wide recievers so I'm more worried about him breaking tackles and finding Bowe/Davis/Doucet downfield for big gains.

Don't forget ND's offense, the line needs to block and give Quin time and the receivers need to get seperation from the DBs or it may be another USC

You beat me to it, Jamarcus is about as much as a runner as Brady is.

lol. i just had a vision of Russel steamrolling one of our undersized LB's. This will happen at least one time.... and I will laugh.

You guys, I'm afraid, are going to have to differentiate between pressure and sacks for this game.
JaMarcus Russell's inconsistencies arise from his "loose" mechanics, not pressure.
He's got a similar style to Vince Young in regards to his throwing motion. He doesn't throw from one arm slot.
He can, like some major league pitchers "drop down" his arm and sometimes even throw side armed. He's got the arm strength to pull off these different deliveries but they do tend to reduce his accuracy. That, alas, is where his inconsistency comes from, NOT his aversion to any kind of defensive pressure.
He doesn't care who is coming after him, who is grabbing at his ankles or who is draped all over him.
He is so big and so strong that he will find a way to get rid of the ball.
No....pressure will not do it ! Outright sacks are the only way to get him off his game.
And, by the way, don't miss a sack if you're in position to make one (Abi !) because he will make you pay for it with his legs.

I am expecting a lot of 2 back sets to counter multiple blitz's from LSU...they will try to do what UM did in trying to get to Brady...the key will be John Carlson on quick slants...also it would be nice if our WR didnt drop any catchable balls...John Carlson for the win baby!!

Carlson's return could be crucial to offensive success.
Jeff and Rhema can not get separation consistently over 60 minutes and against this defense they could be shut down completely without John providing another threat.

I think Russell has decent speed when he rolls out or gets a good head of steam under him, and with his size and some momentum he's hard to take down. But, it seems to me that he doesn't have very quick feet and he doesn't appear to be that quick moving around in the pocket, so I don't think he really gets many opportunities to takeoff and make plays with his feet.

The D-line is going to have to put a lot of pressure on Russel to take some of the heat off our DB's, hopefully the whole D-backfield will play more physically then they did vs. USC.

Watch the LSU/Florida game they were in his face all day long, they didn't have a sack in the game. But there blitzing confused him all day, He lost 1 fumble , and threw 3 ints. In the Tennessee game they also put all kinds of pressure on Jamarcus they won the game but Jamarcus threw 3 ints and had a fumble. And for the running ablity he's an average runner just like Brady, he'll make some plays, but throwing the ball is where he'll hurt you.

He reminds me of Reggie Ball. You get good Ball sometimes, and others you get bad Ball. Hope we get bad Russell

How dare you! There is only one Reggie Ball not ever QB can complete 44% of there passes! j/k

Naw Jamarcus has talent, he can flat out throw the ball! But I think people bite into the whole all black QBs are runners and hes not. He ran a 4.7 40 as a 220 pound freshman, now a 260 pound jr his more then likely in the 4.8 4.9 area. He's a passer, and a good one, 68.5% to be exact.

It's going to take more than J. Russell to beat us. We have the best qtrback in the country and that didn't guarantee victory in every game! It's the LSU defense that we should fear the most. However, if our defense can stop the long passes, we have a good chance of winning this game.

Yah mean, he's got his team's longest run from scrimmage too?

No believe it or not LSU's longest run was 38 yards, Jamarcus had a 34 yarder. LSU's biggest gainer of the the year was a 58 yard pass, just 2 yards short of Brady's run.
