per report on the NFL Network.

i would think Skip Holtz and Brian Kelly are the backup options.

any of the three would be a step up.

if we got Urban Meyer, he would turn this year's Top 10 recruiting class into a top 3 or 5 class.

wow, that would be two pretty good recruiting classes, back to back.

Anyone who thinks ND can pull in a top notch coach like Urban Lier really needs to look at our last 3 coaching searches! Urban is not going to leave Flordia where recruiting is soooooooooo easy to come to ND where you actually have to work at it! Cowher is not coming here! Saban, Davis, etc...the most we would get is an unproven assistant or another NFL guy! Seriously guys WAKE UP!

This is why we will NEVER be relevant again. Nobody want to take this job. Sad but true.

I think that we are in a really shitty position when it comes to the coaching situation. Charlie is not performing up to expectations, but who the hell would come to ND right now. I hear alot of great recommendations on this site, but the reality is that none of them will be the ND coach. Are we better off with the evil that we know?

Let's bring back Holtz. He's only 71. If goggle glasses at State Penn can do it... why not Holtz. He's exactly what's missing from this program... personality... integrity... emotion... modesty.

I think CW has a chance to be a good coach with 2-3 assistant changes. He needs experienced guys around him especially an OC and OL coach!

I love Holtz, and he has all of the characteristics that you stated and is probably got more left in the tank then Joe Pa, but do you really think that he is the answer. I don't.

I don't think Holtz is the answer... and I think it would be a huge mistake from a perception standpoint to bring him back...

I really had a bad feeling in my gut though when they pushed him out... I knew it was going to be a really really bad thing...

He was the perfect fit for this program... and should still be here...

Charlie 100 percent has to go. He's not the guy for this job.

I live in Toronto... a few years back we were in a similar situation... it's the Mecca of hockey here... you have no idea how important the Leafs are to the pysche of this town... and then they hired John Ferguson Jr. as the GM to run the team. He had no experience at all.

YOU DON'T HIRE A GUY WITH NO EXPERIENCE TO RUN THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS. The pressure in this town for hockey from the fans and the media is way too great. You're under a microscope here... it was too big a job for such a little man.

Charlie is the same thing. No head coaching experience... no college experience...

You can't put a guy in a pressure situation like Toronto or ND and expect him to learn the job and figure things out along the way. Every little mistake is under such scrutiny that it just can't be done.

Charlie has got to go. He is not the guy for this job. If we keep him.. we are going to continue to pay.

Just like Toronto had to figure that out and go out there and be aggressive and give Brian Burke a ton of money and clout to do the job... so does ND.

Urban Meyer for new coach!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 2004, Meyer turned down Notre Dame in favor of becoming Florida's coach. Why, then, would he leave a school he once chose over Notre Dame to go to Notre Dame?

Why?

Because things change.

After winning the 1996 National Championship, Spurrier went to bed prepared to wake up the next morning and take the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' job. He didn't. But five years later, he did jump to the NFL. Things change.

In his authorized biography "Urban's Way," written with former Florida Today sports editor Buddy Martin, Meyer refers to his Big Three coaching jobs, the only three his wife Shelley has no veto power to block him from taking a job at. They are Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan.

Of those three, Meyer's self-proclaimed "dream job" ' his quote, not mine ' is Notre Dame, where he was once an assistant under Lou Holtz, spending five years with the Golden Domers. Meyer also spent the first two years of his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ohio State, where he earned his master's degree. He is an Ohio boy who grew up revering Woody Hayes.

So why didn't Meyer take the Fighting Irish job in 2004? Because the timing wasn't right. His authorized biography explains, "Florida's biggest advantage would turn out to be Urban's and Shelley's desire for a strong family life, because he could recruit closer to home."

At Notre Dame, you recruit nationally, which means flying around the country, away from home a lot more. At a state school like Florida, you can recruit a kid, or several kids, during the day, and still be home for dinner, or at one of your kid's practices, that night. With a young family, that mattered a lot. But even with that in play, turning down Notre Dame was very difficult, as Meyer notes in this passage in his biography:

"I wanted to go to Notre Dame," Meyer admitted, "but my family wanted to talk about going to Florida."

Shelley knew how tough the decision was for her husband because "he left his heart at Notre Dame when we left there last time -- he really, really, really loved Notre Dame."

That's "really" loved three times, if you're scoring at home.

So, again, the main reason Meyer chose Florida over Notre Dame in 2004 was because he had a young family.

Memo to Gator fans: The family isn't that young anymore.

Oldest daughter Nicole is 18, getting ready to leave the nest and head to Georgia Tech on a volleyball scholarship. Next oldest is Gigi, 15, a high school sophomore. Then there's Nathan, who turns 10 Monday. Soon, he'll only have one child at home, which makes it much easier for him to balance his professional and personal life -- i.e. the rigors of coaching the Fighting Irish.

All of this is relevant, of course, because Charlie Weis continues to struggle at Notre Dame. You just know that if Notre Dame could trade Weis for Meyer, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

If you're the Fighting Irish, you must have a short list of candidates in mind if you do make a coaching change. And if you're the Fighting Irish, Urban Meyer absolutely has to top that list.

In my opinion, Meyer is one of the country's three best college coaches, along with Southern Cal's Pete Carroll and Alabama's Nick Saban.

For Notre Dame's purposes, Meyer is the guy who repeatedly, and even in his current biography, calls coaching your football program his "dream job." He's also, and this is no small consideration, devoutly Catholic, even named after a pope.

For Notre Dame's purposes, Meyer runs a clean program, wins, works like a maniac, is passionate about recruiting, and cares deeply about what kind of men he produces off the football field.

In short, he is everything Notre Dame would want.

He is -- dare I say it? -- Notre Dame's dream coach.

Better yet, your dream coach calls your school his dream job. How often does that happen'

And people wonder why I think a marriage is inevitable'

Well said. Unles Meyer is a LOCK, we will continue down the road we are on by dumping CW for the flavor of the week. Sorry, but its best to wait this out a bit more. Meyer not coming to ND was all based on timing and where he and his family where in their life (very young family) and how the national recruiting travel would affect them. ND is still his dream job. I think CW should get another year and during that time the ND Administration should do what it does best and use the old smoke and mirrors to let Meyer's people know the job is his if it comes down to a need. I would hope CW could turn it around because he is a ND guy....but it should not be open ended. Meyer has won the NC, so check in the box on that. To be the one coach that brings ND back to life would be his greatest legacy.

My question is, can they talk to him and gauge his interest before firing the current coach?

This is very interesting. My gut feeling is that Weis is done after tonight if we lose. IF we win (highly highly doubtful) he will coach for the bowl game and then let go.

I think right now its this order most likely to be next ND coach:

1. Kelly
2. Peterson
3. Urban

Of those three I want Urban honestly.

What would Clausen and Crist do in an offense like Meyer's. Why can't people just become a little more patient. It's been 20 years since we reached the pinnacle of the sport anyway and while it would be nice to see the Irish with another championship, I wouldn't want to see Notre Dame become like every other football school with an itchy trigger finger. Notre Dame has stood for more than just wins and losses my entire life, we shouldn't sell her soul in the name of football. It's time to return to the Notre Dame of old...faith, values, honor. This needs to be handled the right way. Let Weis have a fifth year, then reevaluate after that season. It is time to restart that tradition.

we WILL win a title again some day, maybe not any time soon but it will just take the right coach, he IS out there and one day he WILL be at Notre Dame... for all we know he is at ND right now...

Good post, Camper. I would have said much the same thing, but NDOM is dead to me after actually hoping for an ND loss, and doing so during the said game.

Yeah, I can see it happening. Meyer committing to come here. I wonder who will coach the BCS title game in his absence? This rumor has taken on a life of its own at this point. Get used to Weis for another year, at least.

That will never happen. If Weis is still there for a bowl game, he will be there next year. If they wait til after the new year it will be much too late for anyone to do any recruiting. Weis is fired next week or he isnt fired at all

That I do agree with. I think he's gonna get the boot sunday (Or there will be credible sources saying he's done for sure) You know, after we get humiliated once again by our "Once" rival Usc.

TAKE URBAN if he will come!!!!!!

TAKE URBAN if he will come!!!!!!

I again say i would take Urban in a heartbeat..... but he is the only one. If not him, keep charlie please. Those who say the players we have right now wouldnt fit his system obviously dont know Urban Meyers system. Bowling Green, Utah, and Flordia all had players who didnt fit his "system", but he molded the system to fit the players. The only system Urban recruits for is speed. Crist is our Tebow, and Clausen is our Leak. Excellent link to to the south bend tribune by the way Junkhead, really like Corwins mindset. Hopefully charlie can take some notes from his assistant from the defensive side. and USC is still our rival, i dont think they quit thinking of us as their rival when we won 13 straight against them. Hopefully we can keep the longest streak and beat the hell out of them today. GO IRISH!!!!!!
