Football Outsiders has an article up by ND alumnus Brian Fremeau of Maple Street fame looking at his APP data over the last 25 years here. It's a bit of a read and does include some math, but very interesting to see where programs especially ND have ended up with their SOS and success against opponents. He predicts good things for the Irish going forward, naturally.

I normally like this stuff. This one was giving me a headache. APP, Power Buckets, APP (Weighted Averages).

One chart of note:
ND 20 yr Rank #9
ND 15 yr Rank #16
ND 10 yr Rank #27
ND 5 yr Rank #27

ND 4 yr Recruit Rank #4 (sounds high although he does so Rivals overinflates rankings. I didn't check by year.)

Bottom Line? See the last paragraph:

What, then, can we really expect over the next few years? It is hard to pinpoint an exact timeline for their resurgence, but Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Washington are all good candidates to reclaim their status among the top programs in college football at some point, simply because they have the resources at their disposal to do so. It will probably come at the expense of a few names we've come to count on lately -- Michigan, USC, and Tennessee are candidates that are already experiencing some form of trouble that may impact their short or long term futures. Others, like Florida, Florida State, and Ohio State may continue without any ghastly spills down the APP ratings. We'll be paying close attention over the next five, 10 and 25 years, and beyond.

After experimenting with a pair of OJT coaches and Stanford molder, ND finally hired an experienced head coach. Of course the OJT/molder doesn't get factor in.

Yeah, I wish Football Outsiders did more college stuff - their work is real quality. They had another good article recently on new coaches at programs. Link.

Best line for Notre Dame?

Notre Dame made as close to a slam dunk hire as you can make, bringing in a successful BCS-level coach at a time when their program is likely to bounce back a bit.

I can't wait for the season to begin...

Notre Dame made as close to a slam dunk hire as you can make, bringing in a successful BCS-level coach at a time when their program is likely to bounce back a bit.

In a GameDay crew preview this weekend, Herbstreit noted, "The Notre Dame Program isn't broken, unlike when Weis arrived."

I keep seeing people forcasting 6-6 to 8-4 and thinking this is good. I'm sorry the entire coaching staff was upgraded. There is a Head Coach now AND an Offensive Coordinator. And on Defense the DC and position coaches are committed to the same program.

If the coaches are worth +2 games alone they should leave.

There's a new offense but it actually favors a rebuilding OLine (which wasn't impressive last year anyway). The hurry up, quick plays, and Kelly's misdirection won't allow opposing DEs to launch for set spot 7 yds deep behind the LOS. By the time they get there this year the ball will already be on the other side of the LOS. Sacks and TFLs will decline from last year.

The defense is maturing and won't be hamstrung by the Chinese Fire Drill scheme.

Special Teams will improve

Strength and Conditioning helps all the way around.

There is nobody ND CAN'T beat this year. With a healthy Crist ND should win at least 10 games.

I read the article and now have a migrane. Here are my computations. Winning coach/better attitude/hunger/right guy right spot/if you dont produce you dont play/remember what was down to you now that you have the hammer.

BGIF, I love your reasoning and back it 99%, but there is always that 1% that says be wary. This is Kelly's first year and like I stated elsewhere I'll be happy at 6-6, although the sky is the limit.

We'll know better in 4ish days.
