How functional are recruit highlight clips/vids?

I've been looking at quite a bit of these videos, for a while now, and I notice after watching the video everybody always praises what they see in the youtube commentary.

Or when I read a blog, or a scouting site, I see a highlight video and almost automatically the video is used to "prove" that the player is as good as stated.

What I don't remember seeing is a "poor" video. Or a video where people have critical comments about what they witnessed. All highlight videos are *seemingly* outstanding by default. With nobody really putting the information they see into any kind of context.

Am I missing something?

My thinking is, only good videos are put up. you never see the bad ones, unless someone is trying to discredit a kid. Why do that? I dont know anyone that would go thru the trouble to bad mouth, or discredit a HS recruit in that way.

The fact that a highlight of HS kid made it to your desktop says that there is SOMETHING there.

The bad ones, never make it to your desktop.......

It is after all a "highlight" and not a "lowlight" video. Have you ever read an ad from a company that says "Buy our product, even though our company has all these problems?"

I can only speak for myself and my football experience, but recruiters don't look at a highlight film and say "that's our man!" Sometimes highlight films are just meant to help capture attention, and sometimes some rabid fan posts a video about his or her favorite athlete. I guarantee you a good athlete has his coaching staff, opposing staff, and newspaper spreading the word. My experience is that 99% of coaches are for the most part great people.

I'm sure most of you know better than I do, but coaches and recruiters actually do their homework to an almost crazy level, beyond a simple work application background check.

In high school, since I have four legs, I was able to hop 70 vertical and run a 2.3 40. :) I was receiving letters and calls as a junior. My senior year, I was aware that scouts were in attendance at every game. They kinda showed up on the field sporting their school hat and coaching colors as I limped past. They never spoke a word, but the phone sure rang a lot.

During my brief stint as a coach (lotsa fun), D1 HEAD COACHES interviewed me about certain athletes. I was just a young punk high school assistant, and my opinion was sought from people you may have read about.

These guys are thorough.

yeah my father coaches a High School Softball team that currently has one of the best players in the country who is also headed to UCLA (THE Softball school in the country) next year... I have learned the recruiting process is crazy on the softball level... I can imagine football...

in fact here's a crazy ass story, my father and I are advanced scouts for the same high school for football... well I am at a game in Apple Valley, California and it is never hard to spot that we are scouts... well this night my dad is wearing some actually professional looking clothes and I am in my usual Notre Dame sweater and hat and I guess I looked pretty official... well as the game goes on EVERYONE in the stands is asking who we are scouting and what players we are interested in... my dad and I just figure they are being friendly (Which is kind of odd considering we are scouting THIER team) and give them a run down of who we think are the better players and who we have circled. Well the younger brother of the STAR on Apple Valley's team in sitting right in front of us and he says, "Man, my brother would cream his pants if he knew Notre Dame sent someone to take a look at him"...

My Dad and I realize the overall missunderstanding,... look at each other and hold back the laughter,... we didn't have the heart to tell them at that point... so now one day some guy will tell his kid that Notre Dame sent some scouts to look at him once back in the day...

Don't try to fool anyone bud. Be real.

For example, I am Bambi.

I would have creamed as well. I was recruited by many a known and respected D1 school, but if ND had sent a phone call...

Shit.

I bet your father is a great man.

Kinda funny - I walked into my bank yesterday and saw the most incredible legs I have ever seen. I said to her "great legs" as I sprinted past her toward my banker. She and her parents parked next to me with huge smiles on their faces. She was 5'9" with a rock solid body and looked 24. She said she was 16 friggen years old. A 3 sport athlete.

I looked around for cops. I go to confession tomorrow.

"Forgive me Father for i have sinned. Yesterday, I lusted after a lady that is illegal. But look dude..."

(yeah ok. she was bullshitting me. She was at least 25)
