From Apartment 5E on 129 West 81st Street to ND. DT Brandon Newman from Louisville, KY gave his long awaited commitment to the Irish coaching staff this weekend, in what continues to be an outstanding recruiting class this year for the Irish. In the minds of many, things couldn't be comming along any better if the script had been writen by Larry David himself. With his commitment Brandon becomes the 13th member of the '08 ND recruiting class, the 6th defensive commitment, and the 3rd on the DL. Brandon projects as the all important NT in ND's new 3-4 personnel scheme, and he chose Notre Dame over schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Louisville, Stanford, and Kentucky.

LOL, notice the time tag on this story. I wrote it last night long before Brandon's commitment was official.

Considering the entire depth chart and the current recruits, WR is the most critical need for this year's class. As for the most important strategic aspect of future recruiting success, I believe that getting Forston or Sabino will have the most long-term impact, even though the current class is doing well at stocking their positions.

I agree IUB, I voted WR as well because I think that Floyd is our biggest target offensively and maybe overall (besides the obvious holdout for wishes like Forston, Sabino, and A. Brown.) Goshen thats pretty funny that you had that made up last night expecting a commit. Our D-line is in a place now where we can all exhale and know that we have soo many more monthes to recruit that 4th one and holdout for Forston on NSD. I have to ask though I thought I read that Newman had recently received an Alabama offer. Is this true and what other ones did he get besides Stanford, UK, Louisville, and Miss?

Given our prowess at recruiting pretty well on the offensive side (year after year). I would feel more comfy with a couple more top recruits on the def. side of the ball.

While we're in good standing with 4 DB's, I only get the feeling that we legitimately lead for Blanton. Slaughter looks like a Michigan/ND battle, and he's still in SEC country. J. Brown has been adding more teams to his favorites that've offered recently. And word that McCarthy fears competing with his brother just won't go away. A lot of these stories could end with happy Irish endings, but I feel more unnerved about DB than WR.

You have to remember that Corwin was a DB at Michigan, and that he coached the position for the Jets. Right there is already a high premium on the position. Two years ago, we got lit up by Matt Trannon, Ted Ginn Jr, and Dwayne Jarrett. Last year, the same happened with Mario Manningham, Early Doucet, and... yet again, Dwayne Jarrett. From a strategic standpoint as well as a fan's, I'm tired of opposing receivers not only thinking that they can, but actually achieving career days against our secondary.

Even if we've snagged some talented guys like Walls, McNeil, Harrison, and Gray, this group needs depth, to push each other from within the position. So, considering we have no names on board, and the history we have at DB, I make it my #1 priority. But you could make a solid case for WR, and smaller cases at this point for OL and DL.

Those are the ones I know of for sure. I know that Michigan and Auburn were also recruiting him but I's not sure if either offered, and I think I head that Michigan had somewhat colloed on him due to Brandon showing a lack of any real interest toward UM.

I'm going lb but db is just as important...elite linebackers open up opportunities for the db's to have more opportunities to make big plays or smuther offensive big play capabilities

I voted for LB. I have faith that Weis can produce with whomever he has at WR, and I think the DBs will improve this year with Brown coaching them, so although I would like to see some DB commits, I don't think it is the focal point right now. IMO, LBs are the best overall athletes because they are big enough to take on the OL, quick enough to cover some WRs (mostly TE) and bad enough to walk over to the opposing coach and flip him off.

I think we need two more stud receivers. My top guys are Floyd, Butler, and Baldwin.

If we accually beat UM this year I see us putting a nice winning streak together against them.

If ND were to beat UM, I would guess that they'll at least go into a semi-tailspin and then everyone wouln't give ND very much credit because they'll claim that Michigan was way overrated to start the year, ala '05. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it'll happen anyway though. I think ND will lose 3 or 4 games this year, and I would guess that the UM game will be one of them.
