Okay, if recruiting isn't a valid argument... Let's hire Ty Willingham who would rather play golf than recruit. If it isn't a big deal and all.

Did you not read anything else I wrote, Charlie can recruit but he can't coach. Charlie can have the #1 class for the next 5 years in a row, and we wouldn't win, because our coaching staff is just freaking horrendous. Everyone thought Tenuta was so good, than why didn't LSU offer him the DC job after Pelini left. Thats cuz he sucks. Chalie and the rest need to go. He's lost twice, not once, but fucking twice to Navy. Losing to Navy should be unacceptable and he needs to go.

I dont really care what they do, I'm kind of on the fence. I do know one thing though they have to be thorough with the search and make sure the next guy is the right guy, not someone who is just going to get fired 3-4 years down the line. They have to identify the guy they want and do whatever it takes to get him, not resort to plan b or c. If they cannot do that just keep Weis until you do find that person because it seems like the kids do believe in him, and want to win for him.

I did not say he has free reign, we had a bad game. They happen to all teams. Period.
We had a bad game, but when have we won a big game under Charlie?
Now how many bad games have we dropped under Charlie?
Navy twice
Syracuse
I'll stop there to let you think more clearly.

You are asking the wrong person, ask the players. Personally I have seen an improvement with the offensive players, the ones you love so much, from last year to this year.
Any strong player would stand up for their HC, even if we were 1-8 at this point they would have his back. The improvement you see is great, but where is the improvement elsewhere on this team? If everyone has improved from last season, and his recruiting is paying off, then why are we staring the Alamo Bowl in the face instead of a BCS Bowl like some expected due to our expectations of player development before the season.

You haven't been following recruiting lately have you? All of those guys are wavering on ND because Charlie might not be here next year. It has nothing to do with Tennessee, Michigan, Auburn, or any other school, just the recruits.
And the same thing happened at the other schools mentioned.

As long as we don't replace Charlie with another B List coach who we picked after being turned down by multiple big time hires, we can retain some(would be amazing if all) and finish strong to our recruiting by letting these recruits know that a new regime is in charge and things are going to be much different. Whether or not it becomes true is an entirely different matter, but at this point should any recruit believe what Charlie tells them in regards of the future?

2 years ago Chip Kelly was the OC at Oregon.

Have you been drinking after the loss?

If you're referring to Brian Kelly, the current HC of Cincy, he did win the International Bowl over Western Michigan 3 years ago. And after doing so in his first game hes built a mediocre program of Cincy football into a National Contendor with what some people here would consider inferior talent to that of ours.

Not to mention in 3 years he built the CMU program to the point where it could become a top program in the MAC, while recruiting Dan LeFevour to the program.

Not to mention he completely built the GVSU football program from the bottom basically in Division II and his success laid the groundwork for his successor to succeed at GVSU in D2.

Not drinking, just got my Kellys mixed up. I do that quite often for some reason. My bad.

But we aren't going to hire Ty, so why are you whining.

Charlie has improved recruiting over Ty's tenure, but that doesn't mean it can't improve with a better coach in charge.

We get top ten recruiting classes with Weis. Not a lot of room to improve, lots of room to go down.

The kids will always believe in him, and will want to win for him. But he has to do his part to help them win, and he honestly has been subpar in doing so for the last couple of years.

I agree 100%.

If we can't get an A List coach whether its Brian Kelly or someone who has proven success at a major program, then I'd rather keep Charlie then hiring another B List candidate and hoping that the hire yields big results in the future.

Can you honestly say Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate and others have not improved from their freshmen year?

We got top 10 recruiting classes, which means absolutely nothing when there is minimal player development and the success in February isn't translating to the Fall.

Name me more than 1 player on Navy's roster Charlie even offered a scholarship?
Has Navy even had a Top 50 recruiting class in the last 50 years?

But does it matter when they have a better team than us, with the loads of HS talent and the player improvement you have gloated about us having previously.

The new reality:

CW stays because he's a good recruiter, bleeds ND tradition, will win more games than he loses, gets an occasional BCS bowl game. People get used to 8-9 win seasons.

However, beating USC and winning national championships? That shit is OVER!

Yes they have, but mostly everyone improves from their freshmen year. Look the thing I don't look about charlie is he reminds me of Ron Zook, could recruit like hell, (his recruits won Urban's first national championship) but Zook couldn't get the job done. He recruits well at Illinois and he still can't get the job done. It took Florida a new coach, Urban, to take those players and win. Shit even if Jimmy and Golden leave, we still have Crist, all those damn running backs, Floyd, Rudolph and all those underclass receivers. Whose to say with the right coaching hire that in 2011 we won't actually compete for the title?

Jim Harbaugh. I know he is not the most popular guy around, but I think he is a good football coach.

... Jon Gruden isn't going to cut it as a college coach...
I don't know what evidence that is based on. Personally, I think he is more suited to college than pro. Fiery coaches always seem to do better in college than pro. I am not saying fire Weis, but Gruden could probably coach anywhere. Remember, he has a Super Bowl Ring as well, and he would probably pull in the recruits as well. But more so than firing Weis the school needs a fiery defensive coordinator that is agressive and tenacious. Gruden would not take less that the head job if he would take it at all.

We haven't fired a coach in 5 years, your acting as if we've changed coaches every single season.

Most people on here have completely blinded themselves from reality and its pretty sad to see that, Charlie has been here for 5 seasons. This is his team, you can't continue to blame Ty, this is Charlie Weis' regime and he has control. We have not accomplished anything other than a Hawaii Bowl in 5 years under Charlie Weis, when you think about that without your Charlie blinders you'd understand why us "yahoos" want him gone and want a regime change.

If you actually believe our recruiting would be hurt by replacing Charlie you must truly be uninformered considering our program and legacy, which most kids have to Google to understand, recruits itself. The better the spokesman for the program, the better our recruiting is.

I know a whole 5 years with the same head coach....what a novel idea! You can't change coaches like you change underware, it's just not smart. It's not blinders it's common sense!

I cannot name you one player on Navy's roster that Charlie offered, I do not think Navy has had a top 50 recruiting class in the last 50 years. However, I am too lazy and do not care enough to look back that far lol.

I still think that if we played Navy 20 times we would win the other 19. Parris's fumble from the get go set the tone, opened the door, and the Naval Academy took advantage. Congrats go to them. On paper, we should have wooped the crap out of them. Games aren't played on paper, anything can happen on any Saturday. Ask USC and other powerhouses who have lost to teams they should not have.

Yeah 5 years certainly isn't enough time to evaluate a HC, maybe we can evaluate him after 10 years.

I've never heard of a 5 year tryout, but I guess I have been looking at one for the last 5 years.

I just don't see Gruden doing much at ND. He had a superbowl and then led that team to crap for years after.

Also in defense of Weis, he did not fumble the ball at the one, that was jimmy trying to make a play and score for his team, one hell of an effort, that didn't go our way, Weis did not throw the int at the four, an obvious miscue between Clausen anf Floyd. He did go for it on fourth inside the five, to no avail, but he did not miss the field goals either. We lost by 2, and blew pontentially 20+ points in the red zone.

Thats the unknown, something these younger Notre Dame fans are scared of so they just sit back and hope Charlie can finally fufill their expectations.

Charlie hasn't won a damn thing, I dont know what makes anyone here so strongly believe that nobody else can do better.

This is such a stupid, tire argument. Charlie didn't cause us to lose this game. Micheal Floyd letting balls bounce off his back, and 2 missed field goals cost us a close game with a team that EATS the clock. I think the best available Recruiter and Coach for this team right now is CHARLIE WEIS

i'm with you chyrsp. this is old and tiresome to read. it was a bad game by the players. granted they may not have been as prepared as they should have been, but that was more on defense. tenuta and brown need to adjust as the game goes on and i didn't see that at all.

anyway, firing weis would be a huge mistake.

You have the nerve to blame the loss on the players. How dare you put the blame on these top recruits that are much improved over last season?

Those aren't my words either.

And Navy beating us twice at home in the last 3 years compares absolutely nothing to any powerhouse losing to a lower ranked team on the road in a season.

Navy beating us at home from my standpoint is as much of an upset as Vanderbilt beating Florida in Florida, the difference is lightning struck twice in the same spot but nobody else really cares anymore.

Can't even get a shout out for the crotch rot?

Notre Dame is establishing the new normal. Better than Davie, Willingham and Faust. Not as good as Lou and Ara. What is the biggest win in the CW era? Sucks to admit it, doesn't it?

If Charlie returns, then Tenuta will be back as well.

This is his first year as DC and we are switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 without the benefit of recruiting for his scheme.

I still think both guys deserve ONE more year. It's been slower than some had hoped. None the less the program is trending up.

Other than Lou Holtz's 5 year window (88-93) this team hasn't been a power in OVER 30 YEARS. There has to be a reason for that other than 6 consecutive wrong coaches.

So a player can't improve if they still make mistakes?

We were an 11 point favorite today... 11 points.
USC was 35 point favorites against stanford a couple of years ago. Tell me what is a bigger upset?

What part of "I not saying fire Weis did you not understand?" We also have Weis til the end of the season and longer, that does not seem to preclude you from comments on his future. Gruden also has the fire to motivate players to the next level, an attribute Lou Holtz and other great ND coahes had as well.

Now for the record, Weis is the head coach, and running the offense. That seems to be working well for ND as far as the offense is concerned. Tenuta, on the other hand, not so much. Please note that Weis got his Super Bowl rings as an offense coordinator, and a damned good one, but it is possible that is all he is, a great offensive coordinator.

Good running teams test the toughness of defenses. And this one isn't tough. I can remember the Hogs and the fill-in-the-blank Redskin RB running the ball down the throats of teams. And, in a way, I just saw it again. The names were changed to protect the innocent.
