Anyone else agree the kid flourishes when he has to make decisions quicker due to time and tempo? After watching last night it became clear to me that you need to run up tempo with him, he will kill defenses with his scrambling and the fast pace makes him not think but react which is his strong suit.

I think Kelly "danced with the one that brought ya", thinking that the defense was going to be able to control Pitt more than they did. Also, we we did not convert in the Red Zone on our slow tempo 1st half running drives and missed a field goal. Had we scored TD's and made the FG at the end of the 1st half, we would have had 17 points.

It is going to be interesting to see what Kelly does with Golson's progression. Golson has a big arm and and Kelly could stretch the field more than he does in the 1st half, which could open up shorter passes. He also could decide to have Golson run earlier on 1st down throws and get 3-5 yards instead of throwing the ball into the stands. He could run more read option plays.

My general take on Kelly is that he prefers his QB to be a pocket passer who goes through his progressions. Golson is not there yet, but he brings tremendous pressure on a defense with his running ability. So, it is going to be interesting to see if Kelly leans more towards Golson running more and throwing deeper, or if he keeps with an attack that is more running back centric, and opens up the offense for Golson's strengths only when/if he has to.

I hope we can pick up the tempo over the next couple of weeks.
Partly because, yes, Golson seems to do a little better when he's not overthinking things.
Partly because I watched the USC-Oregon game last night (first time I've really watched Oregon this season. Damn.). That Trojan defense was absolutely dead on its feet by the fourth quarter. If we do that to them, we should win going away.

I agree, thought he for sure flourished in the 'backyard football' mode...but I have a feeling Kelly won't accept his QB playing that kind of football on a consistent basis.

Part of the problem with running Oregon's pace is that your defense is on the field a long time regardless of how many points you score.

I'd love for a slightly quicker tempo than "snap the ball every play with one second left on the clock".

To add to this:

Firstly, agreed. Also, if we had more depth on D (a solid, top-to-bottom 2-deep), it wouldn't be an issue. But as it stands right now, we need the first team D on the field which makes Riddickulous' post a legit concern.

Yep, give him quick reads. Let him roll out etc. Use his skills to move the ball. If they fake dives on the goal line and let him scamper around the end they score two extra tds in that game. IMO

BK needs to get the plays in alot faster, how many times does EG have to rush to get the snap prior to the 25 second clock expires.

There is one play that should take a millisecond to call, and that is a QB sneak from the 6" line, especially when you out-weigh the defense by 25 to 50 pounds per man. Other than that, it is going to take time to be sure the correct personnel is in the game and in the proper formation and that the play is in Golson's capabilities.
Kelly said last week he wanted to be in the mid sixties for offensive plays and he was. With this group we are not going to get ninety plays and a go-go offense.

Is that taking into account the Triple OT? Not trying to hate, just curious.

We ran probably two or three consecutive plays in the second half with Golson that kind of looked "up tempo." Honestly, where we are now I don't think we are capable of running an up tempo offense for an entire drive. When we did do it, I thought we moved the ball super well.

I'm not saying we should run at Oregon pace. We don't run at Oregon efficiency in terms of scoring.
But I'll bet that our defense is in better shape than USC's. The more they're running to keep up, the easier it'll be for our ground game to take over in the fourth quarter.

I think you are mistaking the tempo with Kelly basically taking the training wheels off of Golson. Kelly has been calling a bunch more designed QB runs, and seems to have given Golson the green light to run more. As much as I worry about injury, and/or fumbles, I think Kelly has to turn Golson loose a little more. He's no Michael Vick, but he can make plays with his legs, and that keeps the chains moving.

what my post is based on is the fact that golson functions better up tempo and that we should do it more not that he should be running more
