Does No Sleep Equal Great Visit?

Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast DT Gerald McCoy is one tired recruit.

For the last few months, his phone has been ringing off the hook.

"It's coaches, reporters, you name it," Gerald says.

Add that to the fact that, on his Miami visit, he was so busy having fun that he only got a combined seven hours of sleep.

"That's seven hours over three days," he says. "Miami's a busy place. It was a good visit, exciting. I went out with the fellas, a bunch of different guys."

He says the highlight of his visit was going to South Beach.

"We just chilled, walked around there," McCoy said. "I was there in the day and went back during the night."

Miami was McCoy's final official visit – he's already visited Notre Dame, USC, Virginia Tech and LSU.

McCoy is waiting until Signing Day to announce a final decision.

He says despite the constant phone calls he's enjoying the recruiting process.

So he's not giving any hints.

McCoy says coach Larry Coker inquired as to how much of a chance UM has of landing him.

McCoy is asked his response.

"I prefer to keep that to myself," he says.

McCoy says he's still not quite sure where he'll wind up.

"In between the All-American game and Signing Day I'll come up with a decision," he says.

Ask him what main factors will help him decide and he says, "I don't know. It's hard. It's a tough decision. A lot of different schools offering the same thing, coming at me with different types of the same thing. It's going to decide the rest of my life."

McCoy took the UM visit with his parents.

It's the second visit they went on with him – the others he took by himself.

Gerald Sr. says of the Miami trip that "We enjoyed ourselves. It was great that time of year with the weather. When we left it was about 55 degrees -- when we got back home it was 25 degrees, a windchill of minus-2. We didn't realize it was a vacation until we got home."

Gerald says his parents will have some say in his final decision.

"About 30 percent," he says. "I'm the other 70 percent."

His Parents having 30% influence on the decision is good for ND, I read his parents love ND and want Gerald to make the Irish his choice.

This guy is awesome. I hope ND gets him.

Dude is huge and he spoke well of ND. I am pretty optimistic after watching that!! With his parents in his ear, that don't hurt our chances.

not to be cruel, but most ladies at nd don't exactly qualify as co-eds. at least not under the general fantasized definition.

i'll give you that.

eventually we'll be able to offer that environment. i'm sure the trustees are investing well enough to build a dome over south bend with climate control. with the roll that weis is on, he could petition for it next year, right after the championship.

clothes?

I thought "layered" was referring to skin folds, a.k.a. Dunlap's Syndrome.

Probably a good reason for that.
If these kids are going to college to check out tail, then they probably should go to SC or one of the southern schools (heck, that thread that someone started about the FSU cowgirls I still can't get out of my head)
But if these kids are concerned about their futures and want to excel at football, play on a national contender for the next 4 years, and graduate with a degree from OUR LADY, then I am sure they will make the correct choice.
Those young ladies in the south are NICE to look at though.

If his priority is the coeds, his best bet is to stay closer to home and take a close look at Arizona St. He's not, so I'm guessing that's not his main factor.

Done with visits
by James Hale

It's been a busy last six days from Oklahoma City five-star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Last weekend, McCoy took his fifth and final visit to Miami, then earlier in the week he made the trip to Norman to watch an Oklahoma practice. And then on Wednesday, he was named the National Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today.

“To me, it was a big deal," said McCoy on his latest honor. "I am glad to be thought of among the elite players in the nation. I am glad people put me up there. Sometimes good players can be overlooked. I got out there and I thank God for allowing me to be on this team with some of these elite athletes.”

McCoy had a glowing recap of his trip to Miami.

“It was fun man. It was everything that everybody said that it would be," McCoy said. "I think I can go in there and compete. They have two guys leaving and I think I can go in there and compete for a spot. One thing they are not afraid to do is play freshmen, because they had freshmen starters this year."

The 6-foot-4, 285 pounder says he's now going to try out for the wrestling team to stay in shape and try to decide between his six finalists — OU, Notre Dame, USC, Virginia Tech, LSU and Miami.

And just who will be helping him come to his decision?

“Me, my family and God. I am going to need serious prayer.”
