Probably because Weis told him that he would go for it, on 4th. So pick up 8-10 yards, and give yourself a reasonable shot at making the 4th down conversion. Pitt's been in ND's backfield this entire series, so the odds of having time to complete a pass for a first down are pretty slim.

Our running backs are not running that well. They look very hesitant at the line of scrimmage and we can't afford to have that hesitation in this close of a game.

This is ridiculous. Our offense needs to score on this drive to avoid the momentum turning totally in Pitt's favor. Our defense cannot stop McCoy, even when he's taking the direct snap. I am very nervous here...
