by Greg Biggins of Rivals100.com

One of the premier defensive back prospects in the west region, Las Vegas (Nev.) safety Jashaad Gaines took an official visit to Notre Dame this past weekend and came very close to committing on the trip. After taking a day or two to think things over, the talented athlete decided to follow his heart and announced for the Irish.

Anyone think this will hurt our chances with Sergio Brown. I know ND was his favorite, but with Gordon and Gaines on board he may have a change of heart. I hope not because he does have the speed to play corner...

I was thinking the samething. Unless Weis and Mendoza put some size on one of the other two to be an outside linebacker.

it is nice to land this guy but I do believe it will probably hurt the chances with Sergio Borwn considerably.

I think Gordon is going to be developed into the Apache LB.

Brown is probably the best talent of the three, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if two safeties result in him going to Illinois. Still, he almost committed on the spot on Saturday.

There's a lot to be said for that.

Gaines just that for Irish
By BOB WIENEKE Tribune Staff Writer

Las Vegas safety Jashaad Gaines has become the 15th player to commit to Notre Dame's football recruiting class of 2006 and the second safety to pledge the Irish in the past week.

The 6-0, 195-pound Gaines, who chose the Irish over Nebraska, Stanford and Arizona State, is the younger brother of ND women's basketball player Tulyah Gaines.

"It was definitely a big deal,'' Gaines said about attending the same school as his sister. "But it definitely wasn't everything. I wouldn't be going there if I didn't like what I saw.''

Gaines made his official visit to Notre Dame last weekend for the Michigan State game.

Also visiting over the weekend was Kentucky safety Leonard Gordon, who committed on Saturday.

"It's just a well-rounded school in terms of football and education,'' said Gaines, a senior at Las Vegas High. "I felt like I fit in when I was up there.''

Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming ranks Gaines as a three-star player on a five-star scale.

"He's a hitter,'' Lemming said.

NCAA recruiting rules prohibit ND coach Charlie Weis from commenting on a recruit until the player has signed a national letter of intent.

Signing day is Feb. 1.
