Freshman Contributors

Every year, a number of youngsters emerge as contributors, whether they be freshman phenoms or special teams gunners.

Last year, we saw Tommy Rees, Bennett Jackson, Daniel Smith, Kona Schwenke, Prince Shembo, and Lo Wood all contribute meaningful minutes.

Who plays this year? Will we see a phenom take over a position? Any solid contributors?

Here are some players I think could contribute...

Everett Golson - Potential zone read change-of-pace QB.
George Atkinson - Cierre Wood is not a burner. Neither is Jonas Gray. George Atkinson is a home run threat, and I could see him getting a couple of carries a game in an attempt to utilize his speed and explosiveness. I could also see him getting reps on kick returns.
DaVaris Daniels - Minimal time at WR. Also a potential KR.
Matthias Farley - Kelly is in love with his speed. Probably a KR and should see some time at WR.
Ben Koyack - Another player that the staff loves. Might see time in multiple TE sets.
Aaron Lynch - The obvious choice. Should definitely see time in pass rushing situations.
Stephon Tuitt - Will get in the rotation.
Ishaq Williams - Will get in the rotation and back up Darius Fleming.
Anthony Rabasa - Perhaps some special teams duty, maybe some rotational reps.
Jalen Brown - Sleeper prospect who could see mop-up duty.
Josh Atkinson - Same as Brown.
Eilar Hardy - Same as the other two.
Kyle Brindza - Punter, kickoffs, perhaps long range FG attempts.

Thoughts? Additions? Objections?

I think one of either J. Atkinson or Brown will redshirt. I also think when it comes down to it, Golson will redshirt, too

I hope Brindza punts well enough to supplant Turk, unless Ben has really honed in on his punting abilities in the offseason.

Nice list Riddickulous!!!!

DaVaris Daniels- I wouldn't be surprised to see Daniels get into the 3 deep sets. He could be a big red zone threat given the team will ALWAYS double team Floyd in the red zone.

George Atkinson- Honestly, I think by the end of the season we could see him as the backup with Gray only getting the rock in goal line and short yard downs...

IShaq, Lynch, Tuitt- All three will get significant playing time IMO, and all three will be an immediate impact.

One of the DB's will get into the rotation, and my belief is that it will be Jalen Brown. Coming from Texas, and playing the style and level of competition he did, makes him the most college ready IMO.

I think everyone else redshirts. I think Golson, while supremely talented, will benefit the most from a redshirt. I think Crist is obviously the man, but if anything bad goes down, I think Hendrix could come in and perform at an extremely high level. That coupled with the fact that BK also has Rees, makes me think he won't waste a year unless absolutely required. Ben Counsell is the only other one that I could see getting some PT either on ST or if injuries occur, but he too will benefit greatly from the depth that we have if he can redshirt. Farley may be the one wildcard in that he may definitely see PT as a KR.

I'm confused: How is Cierre Wood not a burner?

Doesn't his measurables meet close enough to have him less than 5 yards from George Atkinson in a 100 yard dash? Now figure in his strength, etc.

WTF?

With the exception of Lynch and possibly Tuitt, I expect all of the freshman linemen to red-shirt.

In the secondary, Hardy, J. Atkinson and Brown are tough to predict; lack of depth could force any of those guys into duty sooner than later, especially in nickel and dime packages. Hardy's the most likely to contribute in 2011.

Farley, Daniels, and Atkinson should all at least be on ST. Farley's got the athleticism, but as a project, the safe money isn't on him seeing time as a WR this year. Daniels could easily push for playing time at the X. Both Atkinson and McDaniel will likely see carries, especially if Gray continues to underperform.

For our LBs, Grace redshirts, Rabasa and Councell play on ST, and Ishaq beats Filer for the #2 OLB.

Brindza takes over punting duties early in the season.

Golson redshirts, as he doesn't have the physique to survive on the field yet. Hendrix gets the red-zone package.

I agree. I think Wood has the speed to take it to the house every play.. It may not be Reggie Bush speed, but its far from being slow. With his cutting ability, the only way that he gets walked on long run is from a low 4.3-4.2 guy. Even then, IMO he has the power to hold alot of those guys off.

Back to the point of the thread, I think George can contribute quickly. But in no stretch of reality will he carry the rock more than Cierre.

The best he can do is take notes, like a great FR RB should do.

Golson and Lynch along with Tuitt and Councell will be the biggest contributors, in descending order IMHO.

Lynch: will play in a lot of passing down situations
GAIII: Will almost certainly get KR duties.
Brindza: Kickoffs for sure, might challenge for punter as well.
Councell: Will see lots of time on special teams.

Everyone else will probably play minor roles or redshirt. DaVaris might challenge TJ Jones for some time and Ishaq might challenge Filer for time as Fleming's understudy

I also have a slightly-crazy dream where giant Ishaq plays opposite Manti at ILB and flies around the field making tackles and picking off passes. He has the speed to do it and could run with most any TE better than probably any LBs currently on our team. Then next year switch him to OLB where Fleming will have graduated.

Nice job with the list! Disagree on a few though:

* Farley is EXTREMELY raw. Like rawer than Golden Tate as a freshman, and all he could do is run a fly. I hardly see Farley beating out Daniels for WR reps this year. Daniels will come in a lot more polished. Think Kamara vs Tate when they were both freshman, only there won't be nearly as many reps to go around thanks to established receivers ahead of them. But on special teams, you may be right.

* I think Cam McDaniel will see time more time at RB initially than Atkinson. I think Cam will surprise a lot of people, and hopefully he will prove to be good enough to keep Atkinson at WR full-time (whether its RB or WR, I'd like Atkinson to be able to concentrate on one spot his freshman yr. Kid is really talented!)

* Councell - beware of this player - not a lot of people talking about him (prob because he doesn't say anything on twitter and facebook), but remember, he is a tremendous athlete who dominated the all-star game he last played in. Could see time on ST to say the least...

The only thing I don't agree with is what you said about Cierre. He's fast as as hell and as emo as My Chemical Romance (he's a cutter).

Cierre Wood is fast maybe not Jeffrey Demps or Ronald Darby fast but he is definitely a homerun threat.

As to which freshmen will play my thoughts are

Cam Mcdaniel
GA III mostly on KR/PR (maybe at RB but he has to be able to pick up blitzes)
Davaris Daniels at WR
Lynch and Tuitt at DL
Ishaq at LB
Hardy at DB
Brindza as P and KOS

Maybes are
Councell on ST (unless Shembo or Spond move inside, then some LB)
Rabasa on ST
J. Atkinson or Brown at CB

I don't really see anyone else playing, unless we have a rash of injuries.

I understand. I know your heart.

You're good by me bud.

But Cierre Wood is the next 1000 yard rusher at ND...

This I agree with.

If he plays all 13 games, all he needs to do is average 77 yards per game and he'll have a thousand.

If Cam and some CB's actualy are good enough to contribute with Ishaq and Lynch ... I will be stoked!

Its imperative that the following players see the field this year:

Jalen Brown: He and Lo Wood have to get playing time this year as they are the heir apparents at CB in 2012. In our system, Brown is vastly underrated being that he is a very good tackler. In the two deep system he is the ideal CB.

Davaris Daniels: Somebody has to take over for Michael Floyd and since BK is on record as saying that he needs 7 receiver(including TE's), I think Daniels will be one of them.

Stephon Tuitt and Aaron Lynch: Look at the tape of the MSU game. Late in the game, ESPN showed our defense on the sideline and it wasnt a pretty picture. The guys were DONE. Even highly conditioned guys like Manti Teo and Gary Gray looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. While there is no doubt that our team is in much better shape(Longo>Mendoza) I think a heavy rotation of these two along with Hafis Williams and Kona Schwenke is going to be needed as BK longs to get back to the offense seen in the MSU game.

George Atkinson: With the lack of experience depth behind 2011(!) break out player, Cierre Wood, Atkinson will undoubtly get reps at the RB position. Looking forward to the departure of Jonas Gray, sr, the development of Aktinson is very important.

Ishaq Williams: I just dont think it possible to keep him off the field. Similar to Manti Teo, he will make schematic mistakes especially on run pass options but his overall talent is undeniable. IMO, he will be pushing for more playing time by the USC game and a de facto starter by the end of the year. Similar to Brown and Daniels, he will be needed in 2012 and must gain valuable game time experience before then.

He averaged 6.9 ypc over the final 3 games last year and in the Spring Game seemed to know all of the blocking schemes. 1,000 yds for sure.

maybe i'm nitpicking here, punt returns, what did we rank out of 119 D1 schools. I might be in the minority here but maybe one of the freshman can pull this off. I know Theo was on kickoff returns as freshman. we'll see.

Cierre Wood is very fast dammit!!

First we had people say he's not big or strong enough. Now he's not fast enough? He's the fastest and best RB we've had in a decade, I will hear nothing otherwise.

Not Playing: Carrico, Grace, Hanratty, Hegarty, Hounshell, Martin, Niklas, and Springmann.

The only one on that list I would have my doubts about is Niklas, but not being an early enrollee and still not knowing exactly where he plays...sounds like a redshirt.

Josh Atkinson: Tough call, leaning towards not playing or maybe just special teams. Will regular PT come down to a battle between him and Brown?

GA3: Since he has the capability to play receiver, tailback, return man...the safe bet to lead the rookies in all-purpose yardage. Not sure he'll have a huge impact, but he's going to play.

Brindza: Please be our punter. Kickoff man too.

Jalen Brown: I think J. Atkinson is really raw and Brown is more polished. He should see some regular time at corner.

Councell: Besides Tuitt, probably the one player I can't wait to watch during fall camp. Definitely think he's on special teams while he's making a contribution at linebacker late in the season. Loved this kid since day one...I think he's special.

Daniels: High hopes...certainly the talent to be starting by mid-season. He will be in the top 5 on the team in receptions.

Farley: Special teams player, possibly gets some minutes at receiver in 4th quarters.

Golson: Redshirt

Hardy: Interesting case...we have 5 other veteran safeties right now. Really love this kid, just not sure where he's going to fit in this year. Does he quickly leap frog Collinsworth and McCarthy and into the two-deep?

Koyack: Still scratching my head that Kelly has all but said he will play. Great talent for sure, but with Eifert and Ragone, plus Kelly recently praising Welch...and Golic as a 4th option...is it necessary to play Koyack?

Lynch: All day baby.

McDaniel: Won't be shocked if he's the regular back up to The Mist after a few games. Right up there with GA3 to be the rookie leader in all-purpose yardage. Love this kid.

Rabasa: With the depth we've built in the front seven, I think I'd like to redshirt him, but Rabasa seems like the kid who will not accept sitting out. Definitely a special teams demon.

Tuitt: With Councell, the player I look forward to seeing most. Still think his potential might be higher than Lynch and Ishaq. Immediate playing time fo sho.

Ishaq: I don't think he plays as much as Lynch and Tuitt, but he'll be a regular.

ND has alot of depth that they didnt have before the 2009 and 2010 classes came in.

Guys like Dan Fox, Danny Spond, Austin Collinsonworth, Kendell Moore and Bennett Jackson aren't just going to give up positions on special team units to the freshman.

I kinda like the idea of all of this competion for units like special teams. I expect a very spirited fall camp. Very spirited.

I can't agree or disagree with any assessment. It's all speculation and guess work. The one thing I do agree with is that this summer/fall camp is going to be amazing.

I agree with everything you just stated! Especially about Jalen Brown. He is more polished than Josh Atkins and is perfect in a zone scheme. Jalen Brown is vastly underrated and he needs to get ready for serious playing time in 2012.

I also think Councel will See significant playing time on ST.

Good article on Inside the Irish by Keith Arnold.

He always has great articles on NBC Sports

Projecting the freshmen | Inside the Irish

Group One: See you at Training Table

This group can basically be lumped together, as I don’t expect any of them to use a year of eligibility. Again, this doesn’t mean I don’t think they won’t become big-time players (ask Harrison Smith what redshirting did for him), it just means that these guys will likely spend the season on the scout team.

Brad Carrico, OL — The debut commitment of the 2011 signing class and an early-enrollee will likely see incredible physical gains during his year watching, learning and eating.
Nick Martin, OL — With his older brother holding down the blind side, Martin can follow the family plan by redshirting a season then hopefully stepping into the starting lineup.
Conor Hanratty, OL — Terry’s son will definitely benefit from Paul Longo’s weight room and a few extra meals at training table.
Tony Springmann, DE — He’s got the size to potentially be a mammoth individual, I just don’t see Springmann breaking into the two-deep at defensive end yet.
Matt Hegarty, OL — He might be highly touted, but Hegarty will likely spend his freshman season facing off against the Irish’s No. 1 defense — pretty good practice.

Group Two: Don’t hold your breath, but intrigue awaits

Whether it’s a stacked depth chart or some needed development, there’s a good chance we won’t hear any of these names, but they could just as easily turn into a Kona Schwenke-like player, coming out of nowhere to make a difference. At the very least, they might be special teams candidates and earn a letter.

Chase Hounshell, OL/DL — Something about this kid strikes me as fierce, and his ability to cross-train on either side of the ball has me thinking he might work his way onto the field.
Anthony Rabasa, OLB — Rabasa might not grab the eyeballs like some recruits, but this kid played elite football in an elite league, a good recipe for early success.
Troy Niklas, OL/DL — Call it West Coast bias, but there’s something about this lanky Orange County product that’s intriguing right out of the gate.
Jarrett Grace, LB — He’s walking into a crowded depth chart, but Grace has an All-American ceiling, something I won’t say about many recruits.

Group Three: So you’re saying there’s a chance…

In honor of Lloyd Christmas, Group Three either fills a need for the Irish or is good enough to have the coaching staff find a role for them. Sure, they might not turn into freshman All-Americans, but expect to hear Tom Hammond or Mike Mayock gushing over one of these guys relatively soon.

Ben Koyack, TE — The Irish have a great depth chart in front of him, but Koyack’s the real deal with the ball in his hands. If he puts in the time this summer gaining some good weight, he’ll have every chance to add some weaponry to the tight end position.
Josh Atkinson, DB — He’s got nice height, good speed, and great bloodlines, I just don’t know how ready Josh is to contribute on a very good defense with an excellent (but thin) secondary.
Kyle Brindza, K/P — That rocket that’s replaced Brindza’s leg hopefully will give the Irish a jolt, both in the kickoff game and in punting.
Jalen Brown, DB — It’s hard to know what someone brings until they’re on campus, but Brown’s got the speed to contribute early on in special teams.

Group Four: Expect to hear these names

They might not turn into instant stars, but expect to hear from this group in the same way you heard from Prince Shembo. Brian Kelly will find a way to get the player, and his talents, onto the field.

Eilar Hardy, DB — The safety depth still isn’t great, and Hardy could add some athleticism to the mix.
Matthias Farley, WR/DB — Raw athlete was singled out by Brian Kelly for being the potential sleeper of the freshman class. He’s 6-foot-4 and 200-pounds. His spot might be the red zone.
Ben Councell, OLB — With both Shembo and Danny Spond impressing, Councell might not have much of a role in the two-deep, but the lanky linebacker could be a terror on special teams.
Ishaq Williams, OLB — Call me crazy, but Williams might not see the field all that much this year. Sitting behind Darius Fleming and potentially a guy like Steve Filer, Williams could really learn a lot of football, even if it’s from the bench.
Everett Golson, QB — I think Golson will beat out Andrew Hendrix for the three-spot, but I don’t know if Dayne Crist (or Tommy Rees) will let him make much of a difference. Golson brings some much needed athleticism to the position and a nice change of pace.
Cam McDaniel, RB — If anything, McDaniel might walk onto campus as the best punt returner on the roster. (Something the Irish are clearly in need of getting fixed.)

Best Bets for Breakout

My failed attempt at an alliteration does give us a few great candidates for major immediate impact. If these guys deliver on what recruitniks drooled over, then Irish fans are going to be very happy with this group dominates as soon as early September.

Davaris Daniels, WR — His athleticism seems to jump off the screen when you watch him, but his lack of experience at wide receiver might hurt. That said, if he’s a quick learner, expect a trio of Michael Floyd, TJ Jones and Theo Riddick starting things out with guys like John Goodman, Deion Walker and Davaris Daniels breathing down their necks.
George Atkinson, RB/WR — Atkinson played in the Army All-American game as a safety. He’ll likely tote the football at Notre Dame, or pass catches depending on what the offense needs. His versatility could mean a lot to the Irish offense.
Stephon Tuitt, DE — We didn’t get a chance to see him this spring, but the man is the size of a redwood tree. If Tuitt comes into camp in shape, he’ll be playing quite a bit of football.
Aaron Lynch, DE — Come on, did you think it’d be anyone else? Lynch’s transcendent performance in the Blue-Gold spring game has people thinking the Irish have their first true pass rushing threat since Justin Tuck.

Top
