I'm just amazed at how recruiting is going. Other potential recruits will notice this. We already have a highly touted QB.

Three trips to South Bend were enough.

Yesterday morning, before departing the Hoosier state following a three-day visit, Mechanicsburg junior quarterback Zach Frazer told new Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis the good news.


Frazer, The Associated Press Class AAA Player of the Year, gave the Fighting Irish an early verbal commitment.

"I appreciate all the schools and coaches that have been recruiting me, especially those who I have met personally over my trips," Frazer said last night when reached at home.

"This has been a very exciting process. It was a tough decision. But I feel it's the right one for me."

Frazer's verbal commitment is non-binding until he signs on national letter of intent day in February.

"I know I'm blessed with more than I can ask for going to Notre Dame," said Frazer, who set the state single-season passing record with 3,674 yards in the fall. "I told Coach Weis Notre Dame has all the things I was looking for. They have sound academics. Coach Weis has put together an unbelievable coaching staff. The facilities are awesome.

"Also, I like that it's a faith-based atmosphere. I'm very religious, and I like having those things around. It's not forced on you, but it's there. It's everything tied into one. And that's why I committed."

Shortly after Weis, a Notre Dame graduate who owns four Super Bowl rings in 15 years as an NFL assistant, was named the Fighting Irish coach, he pegged Frazer as his top quarterback recruit.

Recognized as one of the most creative and innovative offensive coordinators in the NFL, Weis also is largely responsible for developing former sixth-round draft pick Tom Brady of the New England Patriots into a two-time Super Bowl MVP.

So Weis and Fighting Irish quarterbacks coach David Cutcliffe, the former head coach at Mississippi, knew what they were looking for when they started to shop around the country for their future signal-caller.

And early on the duo settled on Frazer.

When Frazer visited South Bend for junior day, his second trip to Notre Dame, Weis made it perfectly clear he wanted Frazer.

"Charlie told Zach, in his opinion, he's the best quarterback in the country," said Mechanicsburg coach Rich Lichtel, who accompanied Frazer on his latest visit to South Bend. "He's an amazing guy. He's such a high-profile coach, yet he made Zach feel important. Charlie told Zach we can build a program around you.

"Everything just fell into place. It was a great experience. Obviously, I'm very happy for Zach."

Frazer first visited Notre Dame during the season when Tyrone Willingham was still the coach. At that point, nobody really knew about Frazer.

Then the junior put together a record-setting season. Frazer completed 285 of 441 passes, a staggering 64.6 completion percentage. He threw 27 touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

That's one pick for every 49 attempts.

When Frazer visited South Bend during junior day, Notre Dame was the first school to offer him a scholarship. Since then, nearly 20 other schools have offered.

"As soon as Coach Weis got on board, it has really picked up," Frazer said. "Coach Weis is a straight shooter. He doesn't lead you on or make you think you're No. 1 and then tell other recruits the same thing. They definitely showed they wanted me."

When Frazer left Mechanicsburg this week for South Bend, he didn't have any intentions of committing. He wanted to explore the campus outside football season and look at the academic side.

He liked what he saw.

"I met with the coaches and with deans from the different academic departments. I wanted to see what life there is like without the football," Frazer said. "I had some questions and got the answers I wanted. I've been researching every school, and Notre Dame just popped out.

"It fits my personality. I met some players and really liked what they thought. The overall feeling of the campus just fits me. And I didn't want to wait any

Weis is bringing 'em in early. And on field success will only add to the numbers and quality (although it's tough to get better the top QB)

I believe ND took Lujack, Hanratty, Theismann, Clements, Montana, and Powlus out of PA. Obviously Marino for Pitt. I'm sure there are a few dozen others from PSU, Pitt, and OSU were mentioning over the past 25 years.

Jim Kelly is from Pittsburgh, isn't he? I'm not sure how good he was in high school, though.

And I don't want to hear any Powlus comparisons from Lemming. Part of what killed Ron was geniuses like Beano who over-hyped the kid and made all sorts of predictions that no one could reasonably expect.

The good thing about Frazier is that he'll have time to learn the system behind BQ for a year or two before we throw him to the wolves.

As for redshirting the kid, that's a good question. I think I'd say yes, but then again what do we really have at QB if Quinn goes down. Then again, is an average backup that's been on the team for a year or two better suited for a fill-in start than a more talented incoming freshman?

We may find out this year before Frazer gets there....hopefully we never have to find out. BQ is a tough kid if nothing else (besides having a cannon for a right arm). He has taken some shots I was surprised that he bounced right back up from.

I agree I always think loyalty needs to be rewarded! If a kid as talented as Evan Sharpley has enough talent to be a well recruited QB and he chose ND we should give him a shot.

BUT loyalty should not be the only factor. The battle for certain spots in practice should also decide, It wiil keep the upper classman from getting lazy.

And oh yes, GREAT JOB WEIS!!!!
